Mike I'm so exited, you are so much fun to watch, those figs are doing great, I'm so happy for the progress and it was so cool to see the little figs growing, love the red or orange containers, been doing something similar with the orange buckets, I'm all motivated will send you some photos of my green house progress. Can't wait to get that homestead cutting have already a set apart place for it too! GOOD JOB!
Glad to send some motivation your way! Isn't gardening fun? There are endless possibilities and learning experiences every time I step out into the garden or nursery area. I'll get you those cuttings, just remind me in the winter when they're ready to send.
LOL those trays! I use them as my water well too! Thanks Mike for all your videos. I use pinebark as medium as suggested by you and it has worked most of the time for me!
Glad to hear it's working for you. These trays are essential for keeping water at the roots of the figs through the summer. They've been a lifesaver for me.
Hey Mike, just after watching a few of your videos, from your suchini experiment to this Black Madeira KK fig tree, I'm now convinced about the best natural fertilizer you're recommending! Just the other week, I was debating whether to plant a fig or persimmon tree in our small backyard, and ended up getting persimmon, mainly thinking it will be the smaller tree. Someday, I wish I will have a bigger place or garden. You got my brain turning green, my hands getting itchy. Looks like I'm catching this spring fever from you! BTW, I've started watering couple rose bushes under the eaves with my natural fertilizer, 1 + 2 dilution, this afternoon. I admire your courage using it undiluted even for you baby Black Madeira KK. I'm now excited following your videos and sharing them. Thank you for the inspiration!
Thanks for your encouraging words. I love putting these videos out and glad they get you excited about gardening. By the way, you can plant a fig too and just keep it pruned small!
Hi Mike your figs are coming along great, your zucchini plant is huge your doin great, and like always I'm enjoying your videos it was a good long video you should do more of them 🌿🌿😁
Thanks Michelle. It's gardening pals like you that keep me cranking these videos out. I keep bragging about the zucchini but I just can't help it, the plant seems to put on 6 inches of growth every day!
Mike this is my first year growing figs. I have a Chicago hardy Celeste and a violet da bado. Is becoming a little addictive but I'm trying to keep it under control lol Really enjoy your videos I hope you put a video up on how you going to over winter them. Happy gardening
Good vid. Thanks for the good fig vibes. I have many of the same varieties at about the same age. Looking forward to seeing how they grow and mature into the future. Great hobby! Cheers
It works on all my plants! Moringa, star fruit, lime, spinach, jujubee even flower plants are doing so well. I just started 2 weeks only. Plants happy, i am happy. Thank you.
Black missions are friggin delicious. It does have trouble at my cabin in Zone 8a. I live in Zone 8b, so I'm interested to see how it overwinters where we get down into the teens some nights. Love the videos and especially the "here's what I did" experiments.
Thanks for watching! I'm also in zone 8b and my figs got through a winter that touched 12 degrees. They were in pots and in the hoop house if that helps you figure anything out.
So we FIGured out that the lady has a black mission (I wonder what does she do for a living 😂), and that the black mission does almost better than the desert king (among other important discoveries of course 😊). Sounds fantastic Mike. Another great video! 😁😁😁 Thanks! 😉
Thank you buddy, you did that research for me, I was doing it yesterday without success but you answer my question, Thanks much ( be careful with that knife opening the box)
I couldn't find the green self-watering shallow containers on Amazon (12:38). Maybe I didn't search with the right string. Can you post a link? You could actually get a sales commission. Check with Amazon.
Black Mission is an excellent tasting fig my favorite. It usually grows in zone 7 or higher. I'm in zone 6, but I grow only black missions. As long as you don't allow the roots to get to 20 degrees or below they will do fine. I have to take my black missions in out of the freezing weather during the winter.
I love that fig! Mine actually got down to 12 degrees one year and bounced back just fine. It was sitting between the hoophouse and a pole barn so maybe the protection from wind helped.
Awesome video, Mike, Thanks!! My little Brown Turkey 'twig' is doing well, I planted "Adam" in a half gallon size terra cotta pot a couple days ago and he's doing well, the new leaves on the top as well as the sides of the twig are coming along well. I have cuttings of Chicago Hardy, Black Mission, and Greek White in the fridge and you have motivated me to get them out and getting them in the rooting process. I admire your passion for figs. However I must say it is more contagious than the common cold because you have most certainly infected me with a passion for fig growing!! I'm still waiting for my Chicago Hardy and Italian Everbearing fig seeds to germinate in my AeroGarden. I'll let you know how they do. Thanks for the replies to my messages, you are a good and decent man, for sure!! Thanks and God Bless You!!
Your fig obsession is rubbing off on me. You make it look easy so i decided to try out some hardwood cuttings last autumn from my brown turkey prunings. Like you, i chopped the branches in to loads of pieces and then i just stuck them in to some crappy old compost in a crappy old plastic planter, plopped them in a shady corner or the garden and forgot about them. By mid spring they were leafing up like mad so i pulled a couple and they were covered in roots! In total (after a couple of failed transplants) i have 15 figaroos!!!!! Get this though... mother fig didn't produce and fruit this year... instead nearly all of the figaroos did. Aint no thang, mother fig will fruit like crazy this year with all the natural fertiliser she's getting! :-D
That's great James! It's crazy how easy they root when you do nothing with them and just forget about them in a corner somewhere. Good job on the fertilizer :)
Don't worry about it Nick, it's doing great! I'm super stoked about getting this one from ya cause I knew I was getting great genetics and potential after seeing your large KK. Thanks again for sending it!
Almost forgot to ask you, how do I get this little guy through the winter? We don't get as cold as you but on occasion the temps get down into the teens. Should it be in my 60 degree house or just in my pump house where I can keep it just above freezing. My hoop house isn't heated so it gets really cold in there. Any ideas?
Would like to have a black Madera myself. But being in SC the old home places with the figs that are around them the old barn still homesteads getting a piece of each one of them is a treasure think about it.
Mike try Branch or stream water rake the leaves out of the bottom of the ditch and put it around it for mulch in South Carolina the water is grayed out of ponds.
It just so happens, I also was very much enthusiastic about getting a Black Madeira KK. Since there are so many scammers out there, I wanted to get mine from a reliable source (because I would hate to wait for a while, only to discover I got the wrong kind). Just like you, I pinged him (PA Figs) and he ended up selling a nice one like the one you got. I feel like I'm staring at it continuously and waiting for it to get huge like the one Nick has ... LOL .. I'm glad to come across your channel and love to hear time to time how your Black Madeira KK (PA-KK ?) :) is doing.
That's funny, exactly the same reason I went after Nick's KK. I saw how big his was and it looked so good. I knew if I could get those genetics that it would have the same potential. I'll bet Nick gets harassed all the time by people wanting his Black Madeira KK, haha. I'll post more videos of it in the future when it puts more growth on. It actually has a little fig starting to form now!
Actually when I got mine, it had couple of Figlets :p ... I debated on plucking it to let the plant grow, but ended up removing and since then picked few more. Very Prolific at a very tender age. Anyway, my plan is to let it grow this year as much summer weather I have left (Georgia 7b), and maybe resist the temptation until next year. Until then, just stare at others youtube video and watch them gorge on their BM :-D
It gets loaded with fruit but nothing ripe yet. I think I may need to put it in the ground and cover with a greenhouse to get it to ripen in my area. but I'll do an update when it leaves out this summer.
These trees are in 7 gallon pots still and growing well. I really need to get them in the ground. I'll do some videos on them as the new growth starts.
Hiya Mike am just newbie and love watching your videos about figs just few questions about figs root. They will never rot in the water sauce pan? Its ok seatting on sauce pan fully water for log time ? I remember in Italy summer its very dry but very humidity. Figs planted in the ground in winter season became dormant because the frost or freezy weater or also because rain alot so the leaf became rusty yellow and follow till spring come back. Am here now in Australia and its very humidity but not much rain in the long summer or alot rain sometimes, more longer heat hot weater most the time but we can`t leave the figs seatted on the pot with water for long time so no sauce pan for potted figs they will rotted and die. Can you help me on this enigma or mistery. Sorry my English its not that good still after been here in Australia for over 20 years. Sincerely thanks one your new fan Antonio.
Glad you enjoy the channel! Hard to say exactly the problem. I do know that figs need a constant supply of water through the summer. When I don't water as much during the heat of the summer, the leaves turn yellow and get that rusty look to them and the trees stop growing. That's why I like to use the saucers to keep a constant supply of moisture to them. Good luck! By the way, I spent 6 months in Aviano, Italy back in 1998 when I was in the Navy. It was such a beautiful place. It was very warm in the summer and it would rain really hard once a day, every day, but then the sun would come back out again. Everything seemed to grow really well there.
The next time you get a plant in the mail make up a bottle of Bach Rescue Remedy and put a few drops in the watering for the first month. You will be pleasantly surprised at how well it will do. It will remove the shock of shipping and give you a very happy, vigorous plant! :)
Good video, as always, Mike. Little figs that won't ripen as a main crop fig would probably be a breba fig next year, and you may want to confirm that with Ross. I have a grafted black madiera that I got from Harvey, and I keep it outside until it goes dormant and then put it in my unheated garage. Last winter, when we got the bad cold spell and I was afraid that the garage temperature would get below 15 degrees, I brought the potted figs into the house. They broke dormancy and I kept them inside until it was above freezing in the garage. It was tough hardening them off for being back outdoors........outside for the warm days, but back inside the garage at night because of freezing temperatures. To me, it's best to keep the figs dormant all thru the winter, and try to keep them 20 degrees or warmer, but below 43 degrees. By the way Mike, the 15 degree limit is just my personal opinion for potted figs since the roots are more vulnerable to cold in a pot than they would be in the ground. My in ground figs seem to handle winters well as long as the temperatures don't drop below 10 degrees, and if I have some snow cover, that helps, too. Below 10 degrees F., I start seeing some dieback on my trees, or actually bushes. Don't buy any hardy chicago trees........I'll hook you up with that.
Awesome, thanks a lot! I've been looking for this info and having a heck of a time finding it online. The low end temps you give really help as I had no idea what these figs would take. Based on what you're saying, I think I'll let my figs stay in the hoop house until it freezes so they get acclimated to the cold and then put them in my pump house where I can turn on a heat lamp to keep the temps just above freezing. Thanks again, I appreciate it. Also, I've love to get some hardy Chicago cuttings, I'll pay for them and the shipping when the time is right.
By the way Mike, if you read what I posted on Ross's video, fig hardiness can be greatly affected if, for instance, your figs are enjoying 70 degree weather, and then "an alberta clipper" or other arctic outbreak comes rushing down the Frasier River valley and hits Seattle with temperatures in the 20's, forget the hardiness in the teens. You're absolutely right......they have to get acclimated to the cold for hardiness to increase.
Hey brother, just a heads up for next time, that bit that snapped off in transit, stick it in some soil, figs are extremely easy to root especially from small cuttings. thanks for an awesome video getting me hyped up for spring next month here!
Yeah, I thought about that and maybe I should have but it was a pretty green piece of wood and not sure if it would have done anything. You down in Australia? Wish I was headed into spring again!
The origin of the plant. Both are Black Madeira but one form comes from UC Davis (which is said to be heavily affected by FMV and doesn't grow well), and the other comes from a guy with the Ebay seller 'KK' who originally go his from a reliable fig growing named Jon of Encanto Farms. The fig from KK grows very strong and healthy and vigorous. And that's the story! So most fig people seek out the 'KK' Black Madeira. I can say that I have 2 'KK' Black Madeira's and they seem to be very healthy and while I just picked up one of them straight from 'KK' on Ebay last fall and haven't seen it going through a growing season yet, it looks very healthy. The other I picked up the year before from a trusted fig guy who has a UA-cam channel, PA Figs, and he got his from 'KK'. That one grew very well last summer and was vigorous and healthy. I've never grown one from UC Davis so I can't personally speak to that. Hope that helps clear up all the mud that plagues the fig world, lol.
Hey Mike, I live just about 45 minutes north of you and just put in the winning bid on a KK Black Madeira yesterday! Should be arriving late this week, so excited about it. I have an Olympian that's been in-ground for 3 years, hasn't produced much yet but the few fruit I've had I've liked a lot. Question: do you ever take visitors? Would be cool to come down and see your operation
Good for you on getting the KK! I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to overwinter mine now. Yeah, I'd be open to having you come down but Spring would be better, not much going on right now.
Let me know your method for overwintering, don't want to risk losing the Black Madeira, or any other of my varieties for that matter. Also, I'll get back in touch in the spring about a visit.
Sounds good Chris. For now, I just moved my figs into the hoop house. No cold protection there but it buffers from fast temp fluctuations. If it gets below 20 I may move the black madeira into my pump house with a heat lamp.
Mike Kincaid yeah I just realized, I’ll wait till spring if u want , I also sent an email to Nick at PA fig too- I’m in Pittsburgh. Thanks Happy thanksgiving
NICE !! Hey just one question, I was wondering how your using those pans under the pots? You water weekly and when the pans are dry you water again?? I might have to buy a few and use those next summer.
Through the summer I watered about 6 times a month (about every 5 days) whether or not the pans were dry because it coincided with my work schedule. The pans always had a little water in them. I would highly recommend them.
what i realized resently, by compairing a baby to a very young plant...is this. a baby eats/sleeps, that it, til they are stronger/older. the same consept with younger plants. they need to be fertilized daily or at least everyother day with nutrience. now i,m more successful in keep young plant alive. shading them. i notice your green house. fantastic. much love and god,s peace be with you
Thanks for the longer video Mike. Saves me from having to maximize my screen on my tablet every few minutes. When you're teaching, I'm listening. I ordered a cutting from a Florida nursery and it was literally a rooted twig. Fingers crossed on that one. Thanks for the lead on PA Figs!
BMKK cuttings are not available in Canada, unfortunately; I have ordered several lots of what were supposedly BM cuttings on Ebay from Portugal and other places but as of now they have not been proven (John in Victoria, BC)
How do your figs not rot with all that water? Do you sell fig cuttings? I would be interested in purchasing if so. I love figs! New fan, thanks for sharing your videos.
They sucked up tons of water during the growing season, I was filling the self watering trays almost daily. I wouldn't keep so much water around the pots in the winter. I've been selling rooted fig cuttings through the winter but don't currently have anything for sale. Next winter I'll start up with selling again.
We recently purchased a home with 4 acres and wide assortment of fruit, nut trees and 4 different fig trees. It's been a learning experience for sure but what I have learned figs at least for me are very forgiving. We live in Alabama now and the first year the state experienced a drought and the following enormous amount of rain. The area is extremely humid during spring and summer months. Through all the different weather conditions our figs have produced large amounts with no issues. Bugs and critters are a constant problem but it never seems to bother the fig trees. Hopefully you had good success with your fig tree if you did purchase it. Hope my information helped. Best of luck!
I didn't get it from a nursery but from an individual collector so he may or may not have one available. The best thing to do is check on figbid or Ebay on a regular basis and you will see them for sale.
I bought this from a private seller. If you're interested in figs, check out Figbid.com and you'll find tons of nice figs for sale from reputable people.
#MikeKincaid79 I have spoken to you before about the 12 cuttings of Black Madeira, that I brought from Portugal 🇵🇹 and I haven’t seen not yet NOT EVEN 1 from them a single root! It’s nearly 3 months but nothing is happening! The other 4 White Madeira very big roots and I put them in very big pots! The Black Madeira look dead very very brown, and the White Madeira nice Green and with leaves 🍃! Any advice or suggestions? What to do?
They might be dead. I would expect to see new growth or roots by now. You can set them aside and just wait to see what happens. Sometimes you'll get growth a year after you stuck the cuttings.
Mike, Can I buy a fig tree cutting in the month of May and root it out or am I too late. Also wanted to know where else other then PA figs that I can buy a Black Madeira KK cutting or plant
The cuttings are taken from dormant wood that is fully lignified. If you live in a colder region and the plant hasn't started to actively grow then you can still take cuttings but you don't want to use new growth from this year. By the way, KK, was actually selling live 1 gallon plants, not cuttings.
Mike, first of all I love your channel! Secondly, I noticed that you got this KK fig a year ago.....so can I dare ask if you would sell me even one cutting???😩 I’ve been trying to acquire this kk variety with no luck :( please please please??-Tanya
Hey Tanya, I know how bad it hurts to want one of these and not have it, lol. Have you tried Ebay, I bought one straight from 'KK' last winter for about $200 on Ebay. I'd be careful about buying the cuttings because I've heard they're hard to root and you can spend a lot on them. You'd be pretty bummed out if you spent a lot of money and none of them took. Be patient and if I can get some to root then maybe we can work something out.
Mike Kincaid you are right that would be a very sad day if none of the cuttings rooted...well then I will wait for you to try to root one? Just don’t forget about me :) please My email is tmesheryakov@gmail.com
@@MikeKincaid79 .. I found Kremp Florist selling the Black Madeira KK branch sticks for $25 plus S/H or the plant if available. They will start to sell it in October to April. I don't know if they are reliable because they said they would substitute if they would run out of the merchandise you want. Can you please add me too. So... maybe we can see how we can work it out. I heard it's getting harder to get it. I will delete my email in a few days. You can email me at Prettysure2see@gmail.com. I don't mind waiting. Thanks. 😏. P.S. I heard the White Madeira is delicious too. But I would like a red interior.
I now have 2 Black Madeira plants that originated from KK but they need to put on more size to get good cuttings so I'll have them available next fall.
I explained it in the video. There was a guy with the Ebay seller name of KK and he was selling black madeira plants and cuttings that turned out to be a really well growing strain. It became known as the black madeira KK. You can read about it all over the forums and fig people seek it out.
In the fig world, different strains are sometimes identified by the person who brings it to market. A guy named Keith Karusky brought this particular strain of Black Madeira to market, which is known for it's exceptionally robust growth.
I so want to get a Black Madeira KK! How can I buy one from you when you are ready? :) I just received a Black Madeira tree from Just Fruits and Exotics but I think that is probably from the UC Davis variety. I'd love to grow both and compare.
I think we need a support group for people who use urine as fertilizer. "Hi, my name's Mike and I piss on my blackberries." Joking...it does work. I planted two triple crown blackberries off my back porch and they get the treatment a few times a week. Feed a little, a lot...
Those are main crops. You'd be better off pinching those. I usually pinch all but the single most mature fig. That one is kind of useful to gauge how close/far main crops will get to being ripe. That info can be used to inform good candidates for greenhousing or other considerations.
May I have Nick youtube channel please. I would like to buy black Madeira KK from him. Thanks. I search on eBay and can't find his FB or youtube channel.
It's a shame you lost that top growth on the Black Madeira KK! Putting a stake into the cnter of the pot, reaching higher than the plant top, and attaching an empty pot over the top could have preserved that top much better.
Yeah, the guy that send it is a really good guy and he apologized. I was just so thrilled to get the genetics and knew that it would regrow. But that's why I made the video on packaging plants.
Excuse my ignorance but I'm not understanding how there could be several different varieties of a cultivar such as "Black Madeira". I'm new to figs, but if I were to use roses as an example, for a named variety, it will have the exact same flower if it is the same clone. If the figs you are talking about are different depending on the source you get them from, why are they all called "Black Madeira"? Shouldn't they have different names, or are some just simply imposters? I don't see how UCD could have the inferior variety considering their work in plants. Not trying to give you a hard time, but just trying to understand what's up in the fig world where there seems to be different varieties of the same named cultivar, it seems it'd cause a lot of confusion.
I agree with you 100%. I'm new to figs (had them about a year) and learning more every day. It would be nice if a black madeira was a black madeira but somehow things got gummed up in the works and I'm not sure where or when that happened. What I'm after is a vigorous and healthy black madeira and the Ebay seller "KK" seems to have that so I purchased from him. The fig world isn't coming to me, I'm coming into it so I sit back and try to make sense of it but in the end my goal is to have healthy vigorous plants. So if that means buying a black madeira from KK and not UCD then that's what I'm doing. Although it sounds ridiculous, having certain figs from certain sources also gives your fig more "street cred" if you want to sell them later. As funny as it sounds, I've chosen to just play the game.
HakunaMatata the problem in the fig hobby is there are imposters, fakes, and scams everywhere. The issue with the UCD variety is that it is heavily infected with FMV, a fig virus, which causes it to be an extremely frail and slow growing strain of Black Madeira.
Well, I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track. Last spring I bought that BM KK from you and it's doing great by the way, can't wait to see it leaf out this spring. This past fall I bought a BM KK straight from KK on Ebay just because I saw it and couldn't help it, haha. Should be fun to watch them both grow and compare. By the way, I researched that col de dame gris from herman and saw what you were talking about in the forums but when I went back to Ebay and looked at his pics, they look identical to a true CDDG as far as I can tell. What gives? Could the soil and temp play a part in this and who is the ultimate decider on these matters.
Mike Kincaid possibly. There is also the thought that maybe he has 2 different trees? In the end, only you can decide if you are happy with your new tree.
@@MikeKincaid79 it’s light yellow with green stripes and people say it taste 👅 like raspberry supper cute out with the guns and start hunting I seen people on eBay or figbid selling them tiger fig panache it’s name 😎
be careful in the pot, i did kill some plants in a planter, but they were a more tender plant, not as tough as a fig or a squash and i only did it once.
I wonder how much homework you really done, If you would've done just a little more homework you would've found out that Pastelliere and Smith are the plants to have along with Col de Dame Gris, but time has past and I'm sure you know about it now.
Haha, no it's not a joke. Sounds like it though. I actually have several videos about urinating on plants and showing the results. It's a great natural form of fertilizer.
You do realize that there are more than 50 varieties of figs that come from Portugal, don't you? The Black Madeira isn't the holy grail. Take a trip to Portugal some time and sample a few of their figs. Trust me, there are bitter but the Madeira does come close.
Mike, the same can be said about all of us. I find myself learning something new every day. And I travel a lot during the summer so I've managed to sample a lot of figs, mangoes, bananas, papayas, and other fruit from all around the world that many people don't get the chance to try. And thankfully, I will be planting a lot of them on a land in Dolan Springs. I mean, up until a year ago I had never heard of the Nam Wa banana but now it has become one of my favorites and i am looking forward to growing them. And then there are the Hawaiian bananas. And don't even get me started on dates. If you like dates and you get to the Middle East you might be in date heaven. But figs. Well, they are my weakness. I had tried them twenty years ago and they did nothing for me. But then, I was visiting a friend's farm and he had twenty types of figs and I just happen to visit him when some of his fig trees were ripening. He hand me a few turkey figs. I bit into one and I thought I was eating pure candy. It was the sweetest thing I had ever tasted. And the second one, which was from Syria, I think, have blood red flesh and it was sweeter than the first. And this is where my love affair with the fig started. Anyway, did you get your fig cutting from the guy in PA that NPR wrote an article about? www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2012/08/22/159750471/meet-a-man-on-a-mission-to-save-rare-and-unusual-figs
No, I actually got the whole plant from a guy named Nick that runs the channel PA Figs. It's a beautiful little plant and I'm looking forward to seeing how well it grows next year now that it's getting established. I'm from Phoenix, AZ originally. I'll bet you can grow a lot of nice tropical fruits in Dolan Springs if you have a good water source.
Yes, I do have a good water source but, I know that you are aware that the secret, or one of the best secrets to growing healthy fruit and vegetables is wood chips. Or wood chip mulch. Yes, that guy from the state of Washington has started a whole new movement for permaculture and doing things a bit differently. But wood chips are awesome because they retain water so well and release it to the trees as needed.
Very exciting on the new plant.. I went and bought one
That Black Madeira KK looks beautiful!
It's starting to put on leaves out in the hoop house and they're looking nice. I'm getting excited to see what it does this year!
Great video I enjoyed very much. Thanks for sharing this video with us in Sydney Australia. ❤
No problem, happy to share! Stay warm as you head into winter.
I’m binge watching your fig videos. I love your enthusiasm and I relate to your fig addiction.
It's a lot of fun isn't it!
With my potted figs I just surround them with straw or hay and it keeps them from freezing. Looks great, thx for the videos!
Great idea, Casey!
You are crushing it on your fig collection ☝🏽
There's so many to collect, it's crazy!
I love Johnny!
He was a pretty cool dude
Mike this is my first year growing figs. I have a Chicago hardy Celeste and a violet da bado. Is becoming a little addictive but I'm trying to keep it under control lol
Really enjoy your videos I hope you put a video up on how you going to over winter them. Happy gardening
That's a great idea since it seems to be hard to find information on that topic. Thanks!
Good vid. Thanks for the good fig vibes. I have many of the same varieties at about the same age. Looking forward to seeing how they grow and mature into the future. Great hobby! Cheers
It's been fun and addicting so far! Looking forward to tasting that black madeira fig!
It works on all my plants! Moringa, star fruit, lime, spinach, jujubee even flower plants are doing so well. I just started 2 weeks only. Plants happy, i am happy. Thank you.
Glad to share my experience and help other gardeners. It truly does work and the best part is, it's FREE!!!

can you share the link to the youtubu chanel and seller you buy it from
how is your BMKK doing now MIke?? Did you plant it outside in your orchard with all the others?
Yep, I put that one in the ground. It flourished once it got in soil. Can’t wait to see what it does this year.
Lou Monti did a nice video on his winter storage where he stores his figs. He also has a good one on soil and fertilization
So we FIGured out that the lady has a black mission (I wonder what does she do for a living 😂), and that the black mission does almost better than the desert king (among other important discoveries of course 😊). Sounds fantastic Mike. Another great video! 😁😁😁 Thanks! 😉
Never thought it would be true but I'm determined to find out!
Thank you buddy, you did that research for me, I was doing it yesterday without success but you answer my question, Thanks much
( be careful with that knife opening the box)
I'll keep an eye on the blade, thanks.
I LOVE the rooster!
That rooster needs a show of his own.
Sounds like you're going to be busy soon. Those figs grow fast! Thanks for uplifing comment and have fun with your cuttings!
Doh! It looks like I forgot to tape the tree pot to the box, sorry!!! I am glad to see it doing well for you! Your leaves look incredibly healthy!
Any ideas?
I would definitely keep it above freezing at all times!
Could I order cutting PA?
Would like to have a black Madera myself. But being in SC the old home places with the figs that are around them the old barn still homesteads getting a piece of each one of them is a treasure think about it.
Mike try Branch or stream water rake the leaves out of the bottom of the ditch and put it around it for mulch in South Carolina the water is grayed out of ponds.
Sounds like great mulch
the small figs on the Olympian are just main crop; they won't ripen, but you should get brebas on the year old branches next year
your figs look good!!!!
Thanks Stephen, looking forward to getting some fruit next year!
Hello,
Very good signals from Johny the rooster :) :)
And very interest your infos .
can you give us an update on how your Black Madeira fig is doing and whether you've had any ripe fruit?
It gets loaded with fruit but nothing ripe yet. I think I may need to put it in the ground and cover with a greenhouse to get it to ripen in my area. but I'll do an update when it leaves out this summer.
This is a great video! What is your custom potting mix here? I would like to make something similar. Thank you!
Thanks! I use finely ground fir tree bark.
you must have some nice sized trees by now Mike! How are your Black Madeiras doing??
These trees are in 7 gallon pots still and growing well. I really need to get them in the ground. I'll do some videos on them as the new growth starts.
the figs on your Olympian are main crop which grow on new growth; I have two of them but got no figs last year for reasons unknown
Yeah, they never ripened this year.
Thanks, I'll have to check it out!
The 7 gal pots are sitting in water. Does the dirt not soak up the water and become muddy causing the roots to rot?
Not in this situation. They've been soaking up the water almost daily.
When you transplant it into a bigger pot, since you said Figs are big feeders, did you add a fertilizer into the big pot, Mike?
Yep, sure did.
Mike Kincaid - well you have all the cuttings you want now off the mother plant, looking healthy now. Yep down in Aus
Hello Mike! what's the difference between black madeira vs black madeira KK?
Mike Kincaid thanks for the explanation. Very clear info and great to know the story. Appreciate!
Great video man!!
Thank you David!
Dems KK’s da ShizNit baybe 😎
Great video and awesome fig collection. Do you happen to have any of those BM KK cuttings for sale?
It'll be next year before I do. I'm sold out for the winter on BM KK.
Thanks. Will check back next winter
Beautiful fig tree! I love your video, what is your potting soil? It looks pine bark.
Thank you, and yes, it's fir tree bark that's finely ground. Just landscaping mulch.
Is the plant completely sitting in water in the tubs?
yes
Mike- did u do a more recent video on your black madeira?
It's in a few videos but nothing specific on this particular plant. Would you like to see it now?
Mike Kincaid hell YES!!!!
I'll put something together but it's winter so no leaves, lol.
Mike Kincaid yeah I just realized, I’ll wait till spring if u want , I also sent an email to Nick at PA fig too- I’m in Pittsburgh. Thanks Happy thanksgiving
Hey! Mike. Do you sell the Black Madeira KK cutting ?
If I had enough cutting material I would, lol. It's still getting established in the ground.
I would highly recommend them.
what i realized resently, by compairing a baby to a very young plant...is this. a baby eats/sleeps, that it, til they are stronger/older. the same consept with younger plants. they need to be fertilized daily or at least everyother day with nutrience. now i,m more successful in keep young plant alive. shading them. i notice your green house. fantastic. much love and god,s peace be with you
I like the comparison between plants and babies, very true. Thanks for the insight and have a fantastic day!
thank you
Are you going to sell the unknown fig tree cuttings?
I've sold a few in the past. I suppose I could sell them again. Maybe I'll do a giveaway!
@@MikeKincaid79 yay
Can You share nick information where to buy the kk black Madera
I just contacted him on his UA-cam channel, Pa Figs
fig and pomegranet are, some in what thay want to be happy please grow some pomegranet tree too
That would be cool. Not sure if I can grow them in my climate but I'll look into it.
I love the vids, I live just north of you by an hour or so
Thanks Matt! I love our area of the country. Such a great place for gardeners.
I think the bourjasotte grise fig was the high standard of professor Conditioning, UC Riverside🤔
nice video, i just got KK cuttings as well
Great! Let us know how they turn out.
Hi Mike, how can I buy kk fig tree/ cutting from you. Thanks!
Mike, what size are those causers you got from Amazon?
They're 16 inches in diameter and 2 inches deep.
Hey Mike! What medium do you use for your potted figs?
Whatever I have available. Lately, I've been using a mixture of composted cow manure mixed with wood shavings and fine bark.
Hi Mike,
Will you be selling any cuttings of the KK?
If I can get them to root, yes!
Please contact me and we could exchange emails - I live in Oregon - Are you on Ourfigs? - I am Netstars on the forum
Really like your enthusiasm and I am subscribed to your UA-cam channel
Thanks! Best way to get contact me is through Facebook. I check messages there just about every morning. Facebook: facebook.com/kincaidsnursery
Fresh urine is great, old urine is nasty😜
BMKK cuttings are not available in Canada, unfortunately; I have ordered several lots of what were supposedly BM cuttings on Ebay from Portugal and other places but as of now they have not been proven (John in Victoria, BC)
I’ll make some available once my tree puts on more growth.
Nice video mike do you have some cuttings for sale?
Not yet but eventually.
Thank you for responding let me know please, i am in houston tx
Hi Mike ! Hi everyone ...could you please provide the address in Pennsylvania where we can get this beautiful Madeira fig tree , thanks
I didn't get it from a nursery but from an individual collector so he may or may not have one available. The best thing to do is check on figbid or Ebay on a regular basis and you will see them for sale.
Do you have a link to the black Madeira KK fig tree
I bought this from a private seller. If you're interested in figs, check out Figbid.com and you'll find tons of nice figs for sale from reputable people.
Hi mike 🤓👍
How’s the tree doing 3 years later?
Is it in ground or in a container?
Thanks man, big fan 🤓👍
Thanks, Rory! It's still in a container. I really need to clear a section of my property for a fig orchard.
Got coffee, bring on the secret fig...
Awesome!
Hi I’m from England and have several very nice hardy verities. We can swap some cuttings with if you like. Thanks
Mike, Can I buy a fig tree cutting in the month of May and root it out or am I too late. Also wanted to know where else other then PA figs that I can buy a Black Madeira KK cutting or plant
The guy it was actually named after, Keith "KK", just had one posted on Ebay and it may still be there. He sells them occasionally through the year.
Can I still buy a cutting in May and start it up in a pot or is it better to do over winter.
The cuttings are taken from dormant wood that is fully lignified. If you live in a colder region and the plant hasn't started to actively grow then you can still take cuttings but you don't want to use new growth from this year. By the way, KK, was actually selling live 1 gallon plants, not cuttings.
Will you consider selling a cutting of the black Madera KK
Yes, I'll list some this fall/winter on Ebay or Figbid.
Did it come from Lancaster Pennsylvania?
Somewhere around there.
Just don’t forget about me :) please
My email is tmesheryakov@gmail.com
But I would like a red interior.
i wonder if u have a cutting of black madeira to sell. Its hard to find that variety
I now have 2 Black Madeira plants that originated from KK but they need to put on more size to get good cuttings so I'll have them available next fall.
Mike Kincaid ok i ll look forward for it
figaholics.com - they sell cuttings of his 350 varieties of figs.
Hello Mike, can you send me some of the cuttings of your Fig tree any kind willlbe appreciated
I'll be selling them on FigBid eventually. My user name is rhodymike.
Do you sell black maderia kk cutting? Thanks
Eventually
Do you sell any of your propagated figs?
At times but I don't currently have any for sale.
Would you keep me in mind when you do?
I only know Black Madeira and Black Madeira Large. Never heard Black Madeira KK. BTW, what is the KK means?
I explained it in the video. There was a guy with the Ebay seller name of KK and he was selling black madeira plants and cuttings that turned out to be a really well growing strain. It became known as the black madeira KK. You can read about it all over the forums and fig people seek it out.
SoTRUE Pee is a good compost activator in compost containers or non- human manures.
Great stuff, glad I discovered it for myself.
..Question - What does the "kk" refer to?
In the fig world, different strains are sometimes identified by the person who brings it to market. A guy named Keith Karusky brought this particular strain of Black Madeira to market, which is known for it's exceptionally robust growth.
What does Black Madeira tastes like? can you describe the taste? Thanks.
Haven't had one yet but when I do I'll post a video for sure.
How could I get the Black Maderra Fig.
I'll be working on rooting some soon but it will be later in the summer before they're ready.
A breba is simply a fruit from last years wood.
Are you selling any cuttings?
I'll be selling live plants this winter.
"Hi, my name's Mike and I piss on my blackberries."
Joking...it does work. I planted two triple crown blackberries off my back porch and they get the treatment a few times a week. Feed a little, a lot...
Haha, I love the support group idea. We'll have to make it a closed group so people aren't embarrassed to join but I'll bet they show up in droves.
Little and often.. Is fine... but once i get started its hard to stop !
@@aberdonianwanger LOL
Those are main crops. You'd be better off pinching those. I usually pinch all but the single most mature fig. That one is kind of useful to gauge how close/far main crops will get to being ripe. That info can be used to inform good candidates for greenhousing or other considerations.
Great idea, thanks Derek. I may have a hard time pinching them though, they look so cool growing on the plant.
Ha! Yeah, I die a little every time. I just tell myself next year's brebas will be worth it.
Good point, that's if I can keep myself from taking all the new wood as cuttings in the winter, haha! These poor figs don't stand a chance.
P.S. I'm using your recommended organic liquid fertilizer on all my fruit trees (Kiwis, dwarf apples, dwarf pears and figs) :D
Best stuff on Earth

Well I'm glad someone is just as confused as I am. Thanks for the response!
Hey have you ever seen tiger fig panache Damm there’s magic from what I’ve seen I’m hunting one Later bro 😎

BRB, honey. Got to go pee on the plants. Lol!! Love it!
I guess seeing what dog urine can do to the grass...makes me hesitant.
Yeah, my dog kills the grass too but for some reason I have no problem at all. I drink a lot of water though.
I wonder how much homework you really done, If you would've done just a little more homework you would've found out that Pastelliere and Smith are the plants to have along with Col de Dame Gris, but time has past and I'm sure you know about it now.
Got the Smith and Col de Dame Gris and I still think the BMKK is the one to have.
24:00 is this a joke?
Haha, no it's not a joke. Sounds like it though. I actually have several videos about urinating on plants and showing the results. It's a great natural form of fertilizer.
You do realize that there are more than 50 varieties of figs that come from Portugal, don't you? The Black Madeira isn't the holy grail. Take a trip to Portugal some time and sample a few of their figs. Trust me, there are bitter but the Madeira does come close.
I'm sure there are a whole lot of things I don't know.

Just here because my name is Madera lol
Whoa, that’s awesome, lol. I saw cadaver cakes and thought maybe you work in a funeral home, haha.
