If you’re a TouchDesigner Beginner, check out our TouchDesigner Tutorial Series! We teach you all the basics of how to use TouchDesigner, including mouse controls, hotkeys, parameters, the operator families, and more: interactiveimmersive.io/touch...
TouchDesigner is a rich platform. There are so many nodes and features that even seasoned pros don't know them all. This is particularly frustrating when it comes to creating background content, and I've seen many developers spend days making background content that likely won't be the focus of the installation, but is nevertheless necessary for it to function.
In this video, Elburz shows you how to quickly and easily create background content in TouchDesigner by harnessing some tricks with Noise TOP and digging into the Palette for some effect gems that can take just about any content and turn it into great background scenes. In less than 15 minutes, you'll come away with the tricks you need to quickly pump out content in TouchDesigner in a pinch.

this is probably the most educative touchdesigner tut i ever seen, its like almost everyone who makes these thinks everyone has a gpu or something, npbody tells the poor people what settings they should change so their computers dont metoo them for harrassment.
As someone who hates buying new and more gear, I'm always aware of the difference between learning "how something works" and "how something runs only on the newest hardware". The first is great for everyone, the second is only fun for a few, so we do our best to always make sure everyone can get involved in the techniques and how they scale :)
I straight up clapped when you brought in the noise!
Haha! Can't underestimate those simple nodes!
You have the most underrated channel for touch designer content. Thanks for showing us the ropes!
Thanks! We're glad you're liking our content :) Let us know what you'd like to see and I'm sure we can get it into the pipeline!
@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ I'm experimenting with midi reactive visuals using an electronic drum kit! If you can share some methods for going from Midi trigger to Visual Output that would be super helpful! Until now I have only been using midi to change scenes.
@@stickwithit I can definitely add it to the list!
Your tutorials are so helpful for beginners. Thank You!
Thanks for watching! We appreciate it :)
Dude, I started LOVING your stuff!!! Nice job!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching :)
Thanks man you simplify the concept so good!! subbed! Will wait for your videos
Thanks! If you like this one, we've got a ton of videos that you'll like :)
Your tutorials are great! Very new to touch designer and your explanations are very easy to digest and are very clear! So excited to do more art using this!
Hey thanks, much appreciated! It's a lot of fun for making art, so many cool creative tools to explore 🎨
Great tutorial for someone like me that’s brand new to TD. Thanks!
Glad it's helpful! There are definitely a lot of "easy victories" in TouchDesigner so don't hesitate to take advantage of them!
Great video! As a beginner, I've been looking for a detailed tutorial to help me understand this software. This video provided me with very useful guidance and helped me learn the basics and tricks of the software. I really appreciate the author for sharing their knowledge and experience, and I believe that this video will be very helpful for other beginners as well. Thank you!
Thank you for the feedback, we’re very glad to hear that! One of our goals is to make accessible learning resources so that beginners can start to build their skillset within the software, so it’s great to know that you’ve found it to be helpful
this is so nice!!! totally new to td, coming from blender , helps a lot! would love to see even more simple stuff like this
Glad you like it! Not everything in TouchDesigner has to be super hard :)
me too! coming from blender as well, found out about this awesome free program a whileback but giving it a chance now. how has the learning curve been for you, it seems daunting at first but i've watched enough tutorial without touching the program to feel like i know the fundamentals.
I have a ton of abstract/geometric videos ive made on my phone w glitchlab/mirrorlab so cool that i can practice TD w them thanks so much!
Love this. Coming from an audio background this is akin to sampling. So many way to reuse and recycle and make it your own.
Thanks! Definitely, there's a lot of crossover with concepts from audio -- makes it a lot of fun to experiment visually if you're coming from that background
Thank you so much for this! I'm new to touch designer and wanted some fun stuff quick like this just to get started!
No problem! Definitely take a cruise around our UA-cam channel there's lots of quick and easy tutorials for having fun making interesting content in TouchDesigner :)
Thanks a lot. Really needed this video
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching :)
thanks! enjoyed this and love the result
Our pleasure! Glad it was fun and useful :)
great tutorial
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. We have another great content tutorial coming up next week :)
super cool, thanks for this.
No problem! Too many little tricks in my toolkit :) Have to share them eventually!
thank u for sharing, it's very helpful
Our pleasure :) Thanks for watching!
Love how you described adjusting the noise period - great to see an artist talk in visual terms about maths #renaissance
Thanks, Jen! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Thank you!
You're welcome! Enjoy!
Thanks!!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic!
Thank you!
i just love you
Hey, nicr tutorial! I wonder, would touch designer be capable of receiving parameters from a programming language, or exporting videos by a programming language call? That would have so much generative art potential!
That should be very easy to accommodate. Almost all languages support OSC protocol or UDP protocol so you can send messages directly from any environment you're working in to TouchDesigner and then perform any action you'd like, such as rendering or changing the content or anything like that.
how do you do that thing where you click over the thing you want to change but the little green circle comes up? and you can change it without writting a number?
thanks :)
You've got 2 options. Hover over the parameter and middle click (and hold) while moving the mouse left and right. Or if you dont have a middle click, you can actually just left click and hold for a few seconds and it'll open the value ladder as well!
@Ali Madad great to hear!
Your tutorials are done very well. But, I don't want an output file in movie format. I need the code. Is it possible to get the code from TouchDesigner?
Thanks! Great question - unfortunately, it's not possible to export your TouchDesigner project as code. When developers use the software for commercial projects, they generally use the companion software TouchPlayer (a "playback only" version of TouchDesigner that doesn't allow editing) to run the project file.
great! any idea how to make this motion reactive?
You could approach this in many different ways, whether that's feeding a camera texture into these effects directly (via Video Device In TOP), using blob tracking on a webcam feed (Blob Track TOP) or using the output of a sensor like the Kinect to control certain parameters of the effects themselves (using Kinect CHOP and making CHOP references to parameters).
Check out this video for an example of detecting people with blob tracking: *Easy Person Detection with Blob Tracking* - ua-cam.com/video/ZplOrM6G6JI/v-deo.html
Noob question what button on keyboard do I press to get the noise and other effects on the panel to pop up
Great question! To open the OP Create Dialog you can either press Tab on your keyboard or double click on any empty area in the network.
Thanks, one question Why when I export I cant see with color? Is because I have the free version?
That's strange. The free version shouldn't affect it. How are you exporting the movie?
@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ Thank You. Already Fixed... Small detail ;)
@@diegoolea4332 Great!!!
As a musician, I have been looking for a while for some kind of software to make video's using graphics/my photographs/ video footage. Is that something that can be done with this software ?
Yup! Absolutely. The nice thing about TouchDesigner is that it has a very visual workflow. So if you're just getting into graphics or visual development in general, it can be nice to see what's happening every step of the way. Also the community is really fantastic and full of similar folks who come from a music background (like me!) who will understand what you're trying to achieve and can help you get started. There's also a free non-commercial version you can use to learn and experiment without having to spend a lot of money.
@@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ Thanks, I have downloaded the free version. It's a bit daunting at first as I get a bit impatient, wanting to know how everything works fast but I suppose the curve is quite long and high as I have no idea about programming. I am into abstract fine Art so hopefully this will do it.
@@Ian-gw2vx Definitely scroll around our UA-cam channel and blog (link below), there's tons of work we've done to give you lots of free resources you can use to get started.

Weird, turning my monochrome off did not result in a colorized noise. Any ideas?
Hmm, it's possible that the Noise TOP might be set to output a monochrome texture. On the output page, double check what your Pixel Format is set to. If it's set to any of the Mono options, turning off monochrome will still result in monochrome noise. Hope that helps!
