      Well, the foraged wood curtain rods would look better, while the copper will function better. Copper will make it easier to slide the curtains, and it will hold up longer. Over time it will also weather and change in color. So pros and cons ;)

    Is living on a UK narrowboat really off grid guys? I live on a boat too, I wouldn't claim to be an 'Off Gridder' because really the canal network has quite a bit of infrastructure.. your water point is handy, marina's are like garages pull in for your diesel, having a mooring, reliance on marinas for blacking etc etc. Compare ourselves to the real off gridders in some remote location, growing their own food, without the facilities we have, its my view. I think you know this and want to be truly off grid, I do too, looking for land, I wouldn't be surprised if you are too. PS I met you guys last winter - I was the photography bloke you were doing a video with your electric bikes x

    • @thistinylife
      @thistinylife  29 днів тому

      For the majority, living on a narrowboat means generating your own electricity, managing your water, keeping on top of your gas, etc - It is not piped into your home via the grid. So yes. It's off-grid. I think you have a valid debate in terms of self-sufficiency. Living on a boat, I'd argue you can choose how self-sufficient you want. We don't have gas or diesel. Our boat is entirely run via solar. One day I hope to get an off-grid water set up (once funds allow) We have a small veg patch up the road which supplies most of the fresh food for our summer meals. I keep bees to use the honey for sugar, preserving and making a little money. Our loo is a compost loo that's then used to grow flowers. It's not self-sufficient. I buy seeds, I bought the bees, I bought the composter... But neither is the person living remotely, who's still wearing clothes from the store and using tools handed down by their family. It's all just a spectrum and you can choose where you want to place yourself upon it. I personally think it's better to have an element of self-determination, mainly because I find it incredibly satisfying.

    • @RichardBrigzy
      @RichardBrigzy 29 днів тому

      @@thistinylifeI think what am trying to say is that are quite a few conveniences on the canal system that are not existant for land off grid life, a long hose pipe for you to the water tap for example. I am surprised your batteries are not flat this time of year, with your solar not tilted and no generator, or do you have a petrol generator ?

    • @thistinylife
      @thistinylife  29 днів тому

      @@RichardBrigzy Personally, I think you're confusing off-grid with self-sufficiency. You can live as remotely as you like and need to drive 2 hours for some basic food supplies and fuel for your car. You're still off-grid because you're not having energy piped in to your home. Similarly, a person on a boat may need to do a day's cruise to access basic services like water and to refuel. Our batteries are currently sitting on 40%. We have lithium and I tilt our panels on sunny days to keep them topped up

    • @RichardBrigzy
      @RichardBrigzy 29 днів тому

      @ not at all confused, i am saying our canal life is within a network of handy facilities, so I wouldn’t call myself an Off Gridder, there are many out there on land that are doing far better than us. You want your solar at 65 degrees this time of year not just tilt on sunny days cause ya missing out allot there. I don’t know anyone relying completely on solar, back up generator or engine alternator. The canal network itself is off course heavily dependant on the national grid for water pumping etc . Its the term Off Gridder that doesn’t really fit with canal life, thats my view cause we arnt really that independent, as much as we would love to really be, Ps i kept bees for a number of years, I stopped as they are so forage competitive they cause quite a decline in other forage reliant insects.

    • @thistinylife
      @thistinylife  28 днів тому

      Let's just agree to disagree. I'm not sure there are many people who think a home that has no connection to mains electricity, gas or water is on the grid but thank you for sharing your view. I won't rise to your comment about bees, I think realistically the major problem for natural pollinators is industrial agriculture, urban sprawl and the decimation of native habitats, not the humble beekeeper with a few hives in their back garden. But hey, you pick your battles as you see fit 🙂 x

    I'm not sure I understand what the log storage is all about - are you going to put it on the boat when you move, or are you staying in that location all winter ? The whole thing seems to be about using the strip of towpath by the boat as your garden - which I can see why you would do that, I just don't see how it works with being mobile ! Hopefully nobody else cares how long you stay, or your using the towpath as 'garden' ! Some things get pretty difficult with life on a canal boat ! Have fun with your lifestyle - and good luck with the curtain poles - I'm sure you will choose something good looking whatever it is ! And thanks for sharing your life with us all ! Best of luck !

      @@PBK.london people put something outside their house and get done for "fly tipping". Show me "Its not fly tipping if you dont intend to abandon it" is the legal terminology. If they are storing or leaving items on public paths/property that is the literal definition of fly tipping. Dumping stuff on property that is not your own. Ive reported them to the Canal and River Trust so will let them deal

    • @PBK.london

      Dumping is the key word here. In order to dump something you would leave it there. They will take the logs when their 14 days is up if its a public mooring, if they dont then you could call it fly tipping
