I got the Auto Kamado after your great video for $159.99 at Walmart 3 day special. I love the case iron grill, and do at times, run it on battery. Love the insulated double walls. You can touch it and not get burned, mostly little kids! Has worked flawlessly! My downfall is the shelves do take up storage space but are great when cooking!
Thanks for Watching James! Appreciate the feedback
Great review Tom. You certainly make all the necessary unbiased points to consider.
Thanks Ted! I do my best to
After watching your video two years ago of you running your auto Kamado off of the 20 V battery I haven’t used electricity on mine in a long time. So even though it does not come with the battery or you cannot buy a battery from Char-Griller, you can run it off a battery.
Thanks for Watching Fred! You are correct
Another awesome video. Is there a company that you like best for after market grates? I am looking to get half moon grates and ceramic heat deflectors. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Lee! Anything on Amazon
I just looked it up in October 2022 I paid $224 at Walmart. I really like it and haven’t had any trouble with it. I use a 16 inch steel pizza pan turned upside down for the heat deflector which works fine. I myself would not buy a Huntsman because I would not spend that much money.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the feedback
Excellent comparison and great reviews Tom! I hear the Spider Grills can be used without the controller and the Akon can only be used with the fan. In the land of grills have you tried to swap the bottom ash pan of the Akon with the one with vents from the basic Akon. I see Char Griller sells the bottom ash pan with vents on their website.
Thanks for watching! You are correct! That can be done
Great comparison. Lowe's has the Char griller akorn on sale for $299 which is just about unbeatable. I bought the Kettle Joe from Walmart for $349 last fall. I've been tempted by the Auto Kamado but I decided to hold off and wait to see what new toys show up in the Land of Grills.
Thanks for Watching! Enjoy!
Love my Auto Kamado, can't go wrong
Thanks for watching!
Regarding the Kettle Joe, you are correct about some of its deficiencies. I bought one when they first came out because of the features you noted. Unfortunately it is/was very poorly built. Not on is the hinge finicky, and the dust pan small, the dust pan is also super flimsy. The ceramic placards do retain some heat, but not near what a real kamado does. That dome vent was also very flimsy, and as you briefly mentioned, it leaked like a sieve. If you had left over coals at the end of a cook and thought you'd save the remains for the next cook, forget about it........leaks so much air from multiple areas that it just keeps burning until the charcoal is used up. The slo roller was the only thing worth a darn in my opinion, and it fits a Weber kettle perfectly.........makes for a nice Weber accessory. I have owned other KJ cookers and loved them................this piece of junk...........not so much.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate you’re in depth feedback
I got my Auto Akorn back when *you* did the shout-out about the Walmart busted pricing for $250 delivered😁
I swapped out the heat diffuser on the Akorn and sealed the ash catch better, added a stainless grill grate, and I've got at least 50 cooks on it at the cottage.
The Kamado Joe just comes off as a weak offering.
The Spider - it looks like an amazing cooker. I'm quite fond of indestructible grills, with a "New" PK, a Weber 26", an MHP Tri-burn, along with a Grilla Grills Alpha pellet grill. To me, I think my concern is rust. I would have loved to see an enamel coating like the Weber. I still have concerns with my Alpha, but so far so good😀
Thanks for the great videos!
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback and support! Time will tell…
@ jw48335 what did you use for a heat shield, how did you seal the ash catcher
Cool. May I ask where you found correct size diffuser and grates?
I haven’t watched this video yet. It’s 1am here, I’m in Monte Carlo right now. I’m interested in hearing what you have to say Tom. I love Kamado cooking.
Best
Eric 😃
I’ll watch tmr for sure😊
Thanks for Watching Eric! Enjoy your time in Monte Carlo!
I think Kamado Joe discontinued the Kettle Joe. I got mine on Facebook marketplace. Still having issues being the temp right with the slo roller.
Another great video
Thanks for watching Tony!
Solid info Mr. H. I look forward to your sledge hammer pork butt recipe! 🙂
Thanks for Watching! You got it!
I have had major issues with my Chargriller Auto Kamado. I assume I bought a lemon. Connecting to their controller has been the worse experience I have ever had. You would think Chargriller could do better. If someone wants the Chargriller they should stick with the basic Akorn and forget about the bells and whistles.
I have had problems with my Spider Venom, but the company has been a pleasure to work with.
From what I can tell the Huntsman is more expensive, but seems to be worth every penny in the long run.
Thanks for watching Rick! Appreciate the feedback
Hopefully I get the huntsman next week
Hopefully! Thanks for watching!
Me too!
With 2 charcoal baskets in the auto kamado, light about 25 to 30 briquettes, i can smoke low and slow for over 40 hours at 225
Thanks for watching! Good to know
Tom, I purchased the Spider Grill Huntsman and not expected to receive it until fall. I've been following All your reviews and pretty much based on research, reviews and your channel review of this product decided to make the purchase. However, I do agree with your assessment and that the only design flaw is the daisywheel exhaust and to me your modification nailed it, and I wish Spider Grills would consider that as a upgrade. With that said, would you be up to the task of making one for me for a fee? Not sure how to contact you privately to ask this question.
Thanks for Watching! I really didn’t do more than remove the washer and add the gasket, anyone can do that
I see you also attached a handle to adjust the daisywheel. What type of gasket. I'm not handy at making those type of customized changes 😕
@papad9067 lol, thanks for the reminder, the handle is just drilling one hole, the gasket would be 1/8” thick high heat. Both are easy to do.
For someone who knows how 🤔 lol
@@papad9067 For info, Spider Grills addressed the issue with the daisy wheel. They provide a silicone slip cover which works fine for me. I do like Tom's implementation better! My only complaint on the Huntsman, it takes more charcoal than I was expecting to get hot (350 degrees or more). I was expecting more of a Kamado type efficiency. It does hold heat well once it gets to temperature.
Have you ever reviewed a Hasty Bake grill?
Thanks for watching Matt! I have not
@@Matt-fd9hc The Hasty Bake Legacy is on my radar for my next cooker. Made in the USA and I'm liking the rectangular format too.
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
Any particular reason?
In the “land of grills” I’m surprised you haven’t. I’m looking to get one within the next year. They seem to be of high quality. Your insight would be interesting to hear from
@Matt-fd9hc I agree that they are great smokers-grills Matt! Just haven’t had the time,,,or money
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
Trust me they are expensive. That’s what I’m grappling with. I’m going to save up and get a Hasty Bake and plan on it being my last ever grill.
Thanks for responding. I will always be a consistent viewer
Disregard everyone I now know what the Huntsman daisy wheel modification looks like.
KJ Kettle Joe has been discontinued I believe. Great comparison of these three beauties!
Thanks for Watching! Haven’t heard that….
@@smokingtarheel3003 you are correct, it has been discontinued.
@LightZone9 Thanks for watching and for the info
The Auto Kamado could have been a great grill, but they cheaped out in the controller and the app.
Also it is very leaky, so 225F is almost impossible to accomplish. Even 250F is hit and miss and we have to tinker too much to achieve that temperature, which is what this is suppossed to not require.
I find that my Big Green Egg is more automatic than the Auto Kamado
Thanks for watching! I agree that it has its nuances, but after you adapt, it will perform well even at 225
