They begin to oxidize once the air touches them and then turn black/brown. If you put them right into cold water once peeled, they will maintain their color.
I Just made your recipe yesterday for this and baked chicken thighs and it is sooooooo goood!!!! Thank you so much for sharing, I’m keeping these with me for life 🥹💗 I look forward to using more of your recipes 💗💗
What does the rum do for the flavor? How much is left in the taste after cooking, like is it noticeable? Just curious bcuz kids love my candied yams and I use every ingredient in mines that you have listed except the Rum but I want to def try it with the rum now. Yours look amazing ❤
I really like your recipe. I see that you use both brown and white sugar. Most recipes I've seen only use brown. I felt something was missing. I will sure try your recipe before Thanksgiving need a sample 😂 and then on Thanksgiving 😅 your yams look so delicious. Thank you.
How many days in advance can I make these, to serve on thanksgiving day. Also non- alcoholic here for health purposes so what can I substitute for rum. Please and thank you for sharing this recipe. ❤

Why Do Cut Potatoes Turn Brown? When you cut a potato, the flesh is exposed to the air, which contains oxygen. The oxygen reacts with an enzyme in the potato called polyphenol oxidase, causing the potato to turn brown. This process is known as oxidation, and it is a natural response to exposure to air. Additionally, when exposed to air, the potatoes release moisture, which contributes to the browning process.
@IslandVibeCooking I wonder how easy it is to get this rum. Every recipe I've followed of yours has always been a hit so I don't want to miss any ingredients. Let me do my research. I'll report back soon.
Yes they are sweet potatoes. But here in Canada we have called them yams, and I didn't know there was a difference, because growing up we'd nerver seen a true yam. Also according to wikipeda, "Sweet potatoes can also be called yams in North America. When soft varieties were first grown commercially there, there was a need to differentiate between the two. Enslaved Africans had already been calling the 'soft' sweet potatoes 'yams' because they resembled the unrelated yams in Africa.[8] Thus, 'soft' sweet potatoes were referred to as 'yams' to distinguish them from the 'firm' varieties." Thanks for the prompt to look this up. Sweet potatoes are in the morning glory family, while yams belong to the lily family. Yams aren't as sweet as sweet potatoes

Mmm all i need is a little turkey and alot of yams.
When you peel it put them in the water until you are ready to cut them up. That’s all it is to it!
Good video thanks looks good ❤
Hope you enjoy
Submerge them in cold water to prevent browning...
Ohh thank you I must’ve take too long

Them soul rolls next day going to be hitting 😁
You already know 🤤🤤
I get smaller potatoes. that size is so hard to handle
Did you pour more syrup on the top when you had them in the bowl??
Pour some of the syrup in the pan before laying them. It let the potatoes more flavoring
It's called oxidation, you should just put the cut potatoes in water as you're cutting them and until you're ready to cook them.

I have used Club House Imitation Brandy Extract for baking. A few drops and voila it brings in the dept of flavour that brandy would.
@ Thank you for replying, I checked it out on Amazon and the ingredients lists Ethel Alcohol. 🫤
You need to put them in water otherwise the air turns them black
Thank you 😊
This is correct.

You to put them in cold water right after peeling them
Oxidation causes your sweet potatoes to turn black, similar to an apple turning brown. The air makes this happen.
🤤😋
😍😍
Where do i buy the rum from @@IslandVibeCooking
I would have added a cornstarch slurry to the candy yam mix to make it a little thicker
How much Corn Starch ?
The oxygen in the air will turn the potatoes dark. Drop them into cold water after peeling to prevent the turning black. Happy Cooking.
Now I can hear your Caribbean accent
I just made them but unfortunately the sauce turned watery, even after cooking for 90 minutes. Maybe I did not cook the sauce enough? Any advice?
What is the brand of your nonstick skillet?
Sister the reasons y they start to get black is because they peal an put down for over 3 minutes 😅
That's not a REASON 😂
After peeling, put them in a bowl of cold tap water. You do the sweeties just like white taters.
@@TreasureDeal👍🏾👍🏾
I have the taste down but for some reason every time the edges around my yams harden up when I bake them. Do you know why ?
We make them with those ingredients but we cook them on top of the stove.
Instead of the rum, I use pure rum extract!
😊
Someone drank the Rum roflmao
is this recipe the same for Yams?
Yes.
Can you make it without the liquor
You absolutely can 😃
I use pure rum extract!
Is their a substitute for the rum?
You can use water instead of rum

What's the name of the rum sis?
Haitian Barbancourt rum

@@IslandVibeCooking : very expensive rum
DANG it's the END times that's why your sweet potatoes are turning blk
I see that rum almost gone 🤔😂
😂😂😂😂 ohh okayyy
Squeeze some lemon and water put them in a bowl and they won’t do that

I doubt those are 'yams' but are sweet potatoes. the only yams I know of in this country have been imported from Nigeria.
