Novo Nordisk Foundation supports CIMMYT's sustainable wheat research initiative

As the world population approaches 10 billion people, the use of fertilizers has become essential for increasing agricultural production, but it also poses significant environmental challenges. Long-term dependence on these products has allowed food production to grow alongside the population, but it has also caused serious ecological damage. Nitrogen leakage into ecosystems and greenhouse gas emissions are pushing Earth's environmental limits to the brink. CropSustaiN seeks to address this problem using a natural process called biological nitrification inhibition (BNI). This strategy leverages plants' natural ability to reduce soil nitrification, potentially decreasing nitrogen fertilizer use by 20% without affecting crop yields or soil health.
Building on joint research between the Japan International Agricultural Sciences Research Center (JIRCAS) and CIMMYT that began in 2015, CropSustaiN has already developed BNI wheat varieties tested over three seasons, which are now ready for further development and scale-up. The initiative aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of BNI in different climates and integrate this technology into common agricultural practices. The Novo Nordisk Foundation, together with CIMMYT, plans to make these innovations available to all farmers without exclusive patent rights, promoting an inclusive and sustainable approach to agricultural advancement and fostering a global ecosystem of research and innovation.
