I'm a truck driver and love listening this song while I'm driving in traffic jam, it's so relaxing. But, when I stop driving and listen this again, I close my eyes and I'm there ...that beautiful place of peace and loneliest
Ed's version has the soul of a young man, troubled in love and life. Foy's version has the pain of a man that has lost that very love and coping with that life. It's cathartic. I can't stop listening. I'll clarify further by saying that I do enjoy both versions but in their own right. Also, I prefer Foy's version. Ed = Pop, upbeat, softer, lighter feeling. Foy = Soul, bluesy, gritty, heavier... You just FEEL it.
James Lifsey I disagree. Ed's version is 3 notes on repeat and he just sings like he always sings. Smells of amateur, afraid. This is still not entirely blues but it grasps its elements much better To me Eds version is a failure cuz of 0 experience but kudos for trying and this version is the move over, ill show you how to do it.

This is NOT a cover. Foy Vance wrote and recorded this song first. And the original is untouchable. I like Ed Sheeran's version, but it can't begin to touch this version.
Ed Sheehan and Foy Vance know how to sing and convey the meaning of the Blues from different perspectives-This is the power of the Blues when sung from the heart-loss of love 💕 👵🏽👋🏾🍂🥀🍂🥀🍂 💧⚡️💔💧⚡️💙💧
When I first heard Ed Sheeran do this song I thought nobody could do it better. I was wrong! This is probably the most soulful song I have ever heard! Foy Vance where does this come from? DAMMMMNNNNN!
I think Ed is fare to middling (and very very bad hair). But every generation needs their heros I guess. This is simple timeless quality, no fans bullshit. Just great blues.
Just like Gold in it's raw state, not everyone has the eye to notice it. In this case, only few has the ears to spot this kind of gold. If you know what i mean.
Wow...introduced to the song by the artist H.E.R who does an amazing job, then listened to Ed Sheeran's cover also amazing and is the most popular version I learned thru other comments Foy Vance is the original artist and writer and HE is definitely where the SOUL of this song lies you can feel the emotions this song was intended to invoke and it will move you deeply when you hear this version...I still have shivers...can't go back to the covers after this version...all amazing artist but this is out of body...raw...chilling.

UA-cam just recommended this song to me. As I sat here and listened to this song for the first time, the most disturbing thing has been happening: As I think about my past. of my mother and biological father, how much suffering occurred between their abusive tendencies. my brother and I caught in the landslide of their ways as children back then. I start to cry. As I do, the tears are burning my eye sockets, quite unbearably. All the times we shared, holding eachother scared, my brother and I, listening to violent beatings enacted by a crackhead father onto our mother, in front of us, give or take if we were next... Sure enough, I hear the lyrics "I know these tears will bring me pain" I was shocked that in fact this was happening quite literally at the moment, my tears were bringing me physical pain as I allowed more of my heart to be vulnerable to the voice of Foy Vance. I have never quite experienced burning tears ever in my life... There could be something esoteric happening here.. as I don't believe in coincidences. There was something greater at work during this experience And in short, This is one of the greatest songs any human could possibly hear. I'm grateful for the existence of this lyricist and vocalist. Thank you. You've heal me this day.
Michael Phillips I cried reading your comment cause I felt the same and went through and still in a similar experience . I just pray we will find our peace and happiness one day 😊

I kind of hate that in Ed Sheerans version it's displayed as his own song and not a cover...No mention of this legend on Ed's official video. All his fan girls think he wrote it ffs.
Ed Sheeran's cover popped out on my feed and I was just thinking about that. Most people in the comments seem to mistakenly recognize this as an original, which is shameful. Ed Sheeran is to blame. However, I believe Foy Vance and this song in particular will always have the recognition and appreciation of those who this song was written for. Those who actually understand and appreciate the blues. No autotune pop-ish version targeting a naive and futile generation will make the audience that knows who wrote this masterpiece forget the true blues artist and man Foy Vance is. He has less recognition, but the recognition of the right audience, who can appreciate the blues. That is how I see it.

'When the sins of my father
Weigh down in my soul
And the pain of my mother
Will not let me go
Well, I know there can come fire from the sky
To refine the purest of kings
Even though
I know this fire brings me pain

And the seed needs the water
Before it grows out of the ground
But it just keeps on getting hotter
And the hunger more profound
Well, I know there can come tears from their eyes
But they may as well be in vain
Even though
I know these tears will bring me pain
Even so
And, Lord, just the same
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
The seas fill with water
Stops by the shore
Just like the riches of grandeur
Never reach the port
Let the clouds fill with thunderous applause
Oh, let lightning be the veins
Fill the sky
With all that they can drop
When it's time
To make a change

This is NOT a cover. Foy Vance wrote and recorded this song first. And the original is untouchable. I like Ed Sheeran's version, but it can't begin to touch this version.
so thank you. ı wrong it. maybe ı met with ed sheeran's version firstly.
umm.... No I am your just a fan
I'm a man with simple tastes,
In the morning I listen to the news,
At nights,
I listen to the blues.
😂👍🏻
Right on brother
Ed Sheehan and Foy Vance know how to sing and convey the meaning of the Blues from different perspectives-This is the power of the Blues when sung from the heart-loss of love 💕
👵🏽👋🏾🍂🥀🍂🥀🍂
💧⚡️💔💧⚡️💙💧
Hello Kathy 👋 how are you ??
This man sings the blues from the depth of his soul. Love him♥️
You can feel l the emotions and pain
When I first heard Ed Sheeran do this song I thought nobody could do it better. I was wrong! This is probably the most soulful song I have ever heard! Foy Vance where does this come from? DAMMMMNNNNN!
Eth Wei Foy Vance is the writer of this song.
Eth Wei you have not heard Koryn Hawthorne yet
Tenesse whiskey is pretty up there too & Feeling Good too.
from being from northern ireland
Eth Wei right on!!!
no one has this kind of connection with a song as the writer who has lived it.....❤
2021 anyone? the swag and blues that pour out of this man have totally captured me for life! the moustache, the hat and the voice.....so smoooooth
It is simply a fantastic performance of a great song. Ed Sheeran does it good, but Foy Vance is another level. Simply great!
F Faziliu Foy Vance WROTE this song.
words of truth brother...
it is the original version
yes it is ... enjoy it...
I think Ed is fare to middling (and very very bad hair). But every generation needs their heros I guess. This is simple timeless quality, no fans bullshit. Just great blues.
Why is the cover the more popular version. Foy Vance hits the track ten times harder. Chills every time
Anthony Reese Because it was on Sons of Anarchy, which a lot of people watched.
Just like Gold in it's raw state, not everyone has the eye to notice it. In this case, only few has the ears to spot this kind of gold. If you know what i mean.
jr maldito you express it with great words that make me speechless
And because for wrote this song people....this is truly the original
Mainstream promotes sex and youth rather than soulful talent.
Keep coming back to this magnificent vocal presentation. ____ boy would I have loved my hero Ray to have sung this!
The first time I heard this song a few months ago, it was like a dam burst inside of me. I couldn't stop crying. This is a masterpiece.
Listen to the Shoshana Bean Cover she is insane
Yes, listen to Shoshana Bean's rendition; it's mindblowing!
Koryn Hawthorne sang it beautifully as well! Check her out :)
@@marquiseharris2389 she has an insane voice, fact, but she doesn't make the soul of this song justice in my opinion. She.doesn't "feel it"... but again she is a brilliant performer.
I have a dream of dining while listening to an amazing song like this with my loved one, and feeling the love and peace inside of me. A glass of wine, the lights of the city on the window. Oh, life.
Gordana Barb I have the same dream! How far away it is though, until then I’ll settle for just this song. :-)
Yeah like me ooh life
Did you mean dying? Cos its my dream today..
Dying noo I mean love , peace .. Why you want dying !!!!!?
Sitting on the patio having a smoke while the rain slowly hitting the ground drowning out my silent screams of Pain
I love this song, but had never heard of Foy Vance, I love learning new things and musicians.❤❤❤❤❤ What a soulful song.
Honest to god. One of the best version I’ve ever heard. Make me cry again and again
But it's the original version
@@joaovictorbrittobastos1421 I didn’t knew man. Thanks
I had no idea this was the original! The whole time i thought this was a Ed sheeran song im so happy I came across this!! Honestly this is better than eds cover no disrespect to ed sheeran but my god this version is incredible!
You should hear the craig edi cover for the voice is wonderful.
It is the original.
Foy wrote this.
I was listening to this in my room in the middle of the night, had to go out for a cigarette because of how angelic his voice is only to find out it was raining heavily .. pure magic! I found myself walking aimlessly, removed my hoodie for the rain to pour straight unto me .. speechless
Ignorance is bliss.
Well thats not smart while smoking a cigarette
That is beautiful
@@rienkleereveld4384 😅😅😅great replly😅😅😅
true smokers can relate with the feeling, that unique feeling, of walking down the street with rain powering over our heads, whilst having a distant thought, just feeling, maybe for the first time in days, weeks or so, just feeling, feeling alive....
I'm the type of person who FEELS music more than i hear it. This song had me feeling some type of way that i don't think I've ever felt. i got goose bumps and chills to my core. I just discovered you tonight. Cant wait to check out more of your music!!
I agree, Listening to him is an emotional music voyage
Absolutely, my brother I feel music I interpret it the best I can when I pick up my own guitar, but sometimes the feeling being overwhelming like this tune.
This guy is a master, sheeren doesn't even come close. How have i never heard of this guy? Hes my new favourite
I know I am 7 years late but I still have to ask, where has this music been my whole life???????? I'm officialy, deeply lost in love with this sound. Thank you so much!!
Miss the Blues..miss Beale street..thanks for posting
Wasn't going to comment, but every part of this song gives me goosebumps. Vocals, the melody, the band. Trifecta. This is music to me, fee it in my soul, my pores.
My phone need a cigarette after this song
That’s a good one. Top shelf comment.
😂😂😂
Lmfaoooooo😂
Only a cigarette? Mine gets whiskey.. 😅
My sentiments exactly ❤
Heard this for the first time last night, I’m back again a few hours later to listen again. Unreal vocals, so powerful, I’m 110% immersed.
Man....this is absolutely brilliant! Words can not describe what listening to this song does to me.
I listened to this at least 50 times, and I still get goosebumps!
The ORIGINAL unbeaten, deep from the soul, the guts and the heart - thank you so much. Feel the weight of every songline, and it fills my heart. Thank you so much!!!
come back every so often to listen to this masterpiece & it still amazes me. Absolute perfection.... just incredible, shout out to the guitar too
This is what I call MUSIC!!!!
I have no words to describe what I think for this performance..... It's magical and so touching...no no no ....words are not good enough 😱😱😱😱🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song absolutely rips your heart
out and fringe everything out of it...
How could any human listen to this song without crying! OMG his voice catches all the tears and fears in my soul!
its harder downn here in South Aafrica
So much recognition this song has received I’ve been listening to this man for years, I’m glad others have been given the opportunity to listen to his passionate voice.
The good lord had no choice but to open the skies after his soul begged for it here. Jeesh.
I came and I don't know why, but here I am and here I will stay. Long live blue forever!
Foy talks directly with my soul, what an amazing artist he's, WOW
The emotion of this song will run you over like a locomotive...
Indeed... I don't think you can truly listen to this song without crying.
I'm a train that don't know How to stop.
Opening lines just do it for me.. sins of our fathers..the pain of our mothers..deep in our souls... priceless
Wow! Glad I decided to click on this song! I’ve been jamming a lot of blues lately and trying to find artists I haven’t heard. Wow... just wow
I listened to Ed Sheeran's version first, it's nice. Then I found this original ver, I just can say .. WOW..
Trang Thi Pham Me too 😘
Exactly!
I think that the original 'make it rain' song was made by Tom Waits back in 2004.
Eldad Ohayon oh really? I didn’t know that 😅
@@eldadohayon1 it's not it's a different song
I felt every piece of that. What a vocal. There are a few songs out there that I will just put on repeat for a while. This is one of them. Al Green's 'How Can You Mend A Broken Heart' is another.
Does anyone have any other songs to recommend like this one? Soulful, true feeling, meaningful music? I’ve got feelings won’t go away by citizens cope, lumineers, but need mores

Benjamin Todd using again. White Buffalo i got you. Imho enjoy
Gary B.B Coleman - The Sky is Crying
Snowy White - Midnight Blues
Albert Cummings - Lonely Bed
JT Coldfire - She's crazy
Maybe you are going to love these songs. Have a nice day friends.
Benjamin Tod...that's some powerful stuff right there.
Shaw james -midnight dove
I honestly love Sheeran's take on this, but this is the man who wrote it; this rendition is as raw & soulful as it was intended, and I genuinely prefer this original version
When the sins of my father
Weigh down in my soul
And the pain of my mother
Will not let me go
Well, I know there can come fire from the sky
To refine the purest of kings
Even though
I know this fire brings me pain
Even so
And, Lord, just the same
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
And the seed needs the water
Before it grows out of the ground
But it just keeps on getting hotter
And the hunger more profound
Well, I know there can come tears from their eyes
But they may as well be in vain
Even though
I know these tears will bring me pain
Even so
And, Lord, just the same
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
The seas fill with water
Stops by the shore
Just like the riches of grandeur
Never reach the port
Let the clouds fill with thunderous applause
Oh, let lightning be the veins
Fill the sky
With all that they can drop
When it's time
To make a change
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down
Make it rain
Make it rain

UA-cam just recommended this song to me.
As I sat here and listened to this song for the first time, the most disturbing thing has been happening:
As I think about my past. of my mother and biological father, how much suffering occurred between their abusive tendencies. my brother and I caught in the landslide of their ways as children back then.
I start to cry. As I do,
the tears are burning my eye sockets, quite unbearably. All the times we shared, holding eachother scared, my brother and I, listening to violent beatings enacted by a crackhead father onto our mother, in front of us, give or take if we were next...
Sure enough, I hear the lyrics "I know these tears will bring me pain"
I was shocked that in fact this was happening quite literally at the moment, my tears were bringing me physical pain as I allowed more of my heart to be vulnerable to the voice of Foy Vance. I have never quite experienced burning tears ever in my life... There could be something esoteric happening here.. as I don't believe in coincidences. There was something greater at work during this experience
And in short,
This is one of the greatest songs any human could possibly hear. I'm grateful for the existence of this lyricist and vocalist. Thank you. You've heal me this day.
Michael Phillips I cried reading your comment cause I felt the same and went through and still in a similar experience . I just pray we will find our peace and happiness one day 😊
Music is powerful isn't it.
Shonny Newton the rain and the tears heal my frend 🎶🌈

Michael Phillips This is truly a song that reaches straight to the heart. Your story is what brings tears to my eyes. you have overcome great resistance. I hope your path and journey through life is filled with peace and happiness.
These lyrics are beyond amazing. Such brilliant writing!
What a soul, what a energy and what a voice. Deeply connectid, no excape...
This is soo beautiful, I don't know how I even got into blues and jazz but I regret nothing ☺️
His voice went straight to my heart!! ❤️
Yoko Ono - The Yoko Ono? God bless you for sharing your feelings about the song. Somehow it created a musical bridge for me...a legend from the past to this young lad’s voice.....
are you realy yoko ono
Thank you Foy... This is simply extraordinary performance. I think one of the best that I ever listen. Amazing!!! Great voice...
I can’t believe I’ve only discovered him now! Dec 10,2020🤦♀️ Love his voice, sings with so much soul and his mustache is awesome :) I put my earphones on listen to music and block out the outside world and right now his voice just hits different 😍🥰
Me too.. and your comment reminded me of something precious , I haven’t thought about in years 😊. I lost my mom this year ..( this is the shit year of all years I’m not kidding) but anyway, when my parents were really young.. once in awhile mom would have a glass of wine🙄 lol and put on those giant puffy 70’s headphones, sit on the floor and sang her heart out .. lmao .. Good Lord, it was awful, she couldn’t hear herself ..( honestly, beyond description awful 😂). My dad thought it was the cutest thing in the world..and us kids were FORBIDDEN to make fun of her.. 💕 I guess he was afraid she’d stop doing it 💕. Well, that was a bit much to tell a stranger 🤗🤷♀️. Have a safe and happy Christmas ..
@@amatheaslaw7747 Thank you for sharing such a wonderful memory with me🥰 I’m sorry about your mom passing, may she rest in love.
Music is such a wonderful thing. Its one of the only escapes I have that takes me away from reality. I don’t have a great voice either, but I sing with my heart, I’ve been told several times I sing off key😂

I first heard this song with Ed Sheeran singing. It made me cry and invoked the Holy Spirit in me as if it was the song of my life. Sins of my father! Pain of my mother! We all can relate!
Make it rain down LORD!
First time I've heard this song . Dude killed it on American Idol !
Rooting for that guy on Idol man. Love his story and he chose the perfect song

I love how slow and soulful this is
Какой блюз, какое исполнение, какой надрыв, браво!!!!
The pain of life pulling the heart strings and blues plays on
Can't get over how magnificent this man sings
Mr Foy Vance, you throw every emotion into this song. I've seen Muddy Waters live and although he was amazing, I feel your soul in my heart. That, my friend, is lightening and very rare. Love, love this.
Hello Fuphyter. How are you doing today. Hope all is going well over there?
" And let lightning be the veins that fill the sky.. " - Ingeniously!!
Hello 👋
How i wish there was a video recording of Foy singing this song. His body language and facial expressions would be priceless.
Man this is great gut-wrenching music for the soul, body and mind. Eargasm stuff...who couldn't be sincerely moved by that voice and axe! Just WOW!! So good 👍
How much must a person go through to have the ability to sing with such conviction and emotion?
how come ppl dislike this beautiful masterpiece i'm pretty sure they don't have a good taste of music
The energy of a great performance of the song penetrates all the molecules of the body and brain. The feeling intensifies when you remember footage from the series Sons of Anarchy.Thank you very much !
I love Foy Vance, he is an amazing artist and I hope he gets his due!
Holy shit, this is the most personally relatable song I've ever heard, and it was just a random click,Gary B.B Coleman brought me here
Yesss same here!. I was listening to "The Sky Is Crying" and this one was recommended down below.
Sons of Anarchy. Thats our common ground :)
Me too ...holy shit
Same here as well
Beautiful voice ..I try to sing this in and outside of my range.. but this is special... We can all heal the world through our voices.. Looking forward to hear more of you
Well once again, down the rabbit hole of UA-cam and it didn't disappoint again. Great vocals.
I kind of hate that in Ed Sheerans version it's displayed as his own song and not a cover...No mention of this legend on Ed's official video. All his fan girls think he wrote it ffs.
He didn't write it either, dip shit.
To be fair id never heard either and found this one first, don't give up
@Idontknoww576 Yes agreed. His voice has so much emotion and character, a true artist.
Quit being dramatic this video has 38 million views
Não canso de ouvir! Essa música é o meu oxigênio...
Sei do que você esta falando. Também existe uma música que me deixa assim.
I was listening to Mighty Sam McClain's "When the hurt is over", and someone commented that it reminded them of this song. I'm so glad I decided to listen. Another great, heart wrenching, soul stirring song to add to my life.

1 minute through the song reminded me of the hurt is over and now I'm going to play it
I love Sam McClain. Good ol Don needs to keep blessing us with good music.
I love how everybody is hating on Ed without actually knowing that these two are very close friends. Foy Vance has worked with Ed on so many of Ed’s songs and they have both written a lot of music together
And to add on to that they’re both from Irish descent and hang out a lot in Ireland getting pissed till 5am apparently 😂
