RIP, my Dad introduced me to him during the week when he heard Al had passed on. I instantly took to him, his guitar playing but particularly his voice, it's almost a double for Luke except with a clear, softer tone, really like it
The great Al O'Donnell...seen him many a time in the Phoenix Folk Club in Ballyfermot...a Great Folk Club...Al loved playing there and always got a great reception!
Great to hear AL ...used to hear him in the 60s in 86 St Stephen's Green ...ballad revival time ...Sammy's Bar was one of his best then . He may still do the odd night in the Cobblestones .
I have to say that for some reason I´ve never heard of this man. His version of this song just stopped me in my tracks. He makes it his own. It´s so authentic. His voice is so personal and unique yet folky. I love it. The only other two versions I know are Andy Irvine´s and Cara Dillon with Paul Brady.
Al O donnell IS THE ONLY MAN/WOMAN who can sing this song properly. He is to ballad and folk singing as Tony Macmahon or Joe Cooley is to playing the box.He is a genius
@tazio2 Agreed!....Al was doing it when there was little money or fame involved...he had/ has a unique style. He sang ...never roared or engaged in stage irishism...no names mentioned ...I have to live in this town!
They were both hanging around O'Donoghue's around the same time but I think the song might be more associated with Al than with Andy...both do a great job on iy!
Al is now gone from us 6 years today. Rest easy my friend.
God Bless Al O'Donnell best version of this ballad
I could not agree with you more, he sings it so beautifully.

Unknown to me before today, Al is the the real stuff. RIP
By far the best Version of the Streets of Derry I found so far. Know his work for a couple of years and he was brillant. RIP
Al was one of Dublin's great balladeers.
Beautiful 💙
Just lovely - only just discovered this version. One of my favourite ballads.
Brilliant rendition.
Absolutely, he did a fantastic job of this song. To me he fits in the list of Nic Jones, Paul Brady, Martin Carthy, et al.
One of my all time favorite Dublin folk singers ..... Al . RIP
Great Pic of Al as I remember him in the 60s!
Brilliant!

This is a very good version. I've only heard two versions, the other being Andy Irvine and Paul Brady's, which is also great.
