  • Unveiling Uch Sharif's Iconic Monuments in Bahawalpur
The Tomb of Bibi Jawindi, along with the mausoleums of Baha'al-Halim and Ustead, as well as the Tomb and Mosque of Jalaluddin Bukhari, are part of Pakistan's Tentative List for inclusion in the World Heritage List. Situated in the historic town of Uch Sharif in Punjab province, these monuments pay homage to Muslim mystics (Sufis) from the 12th to 15th centuries. Characterized by their domed tombs with octagonal bases adorned with blue and white mosaic tiles, these structures represent significant architectural and cultural heritage.
The tomb of Bibi Jawindi, located in the northwest corner of Uch Sharif, stands amidst the ruins of several other architecturally significant tombs. It commemorates Bibi Jawindi, the great-granddaughter of Jahaniyan Jahangasht, a pupil of Baha al-Halim. The construction of the tomb is attributed to an Iranian prince, Dilshad, who provided the necessary funds. Despite suffering partial ruin due to major flooding in 1817, the tomb retains its symmetrical design, allowing observers to visualize its original layout.
Constructed of fired bricks on an octagonal base with turrets at each corner, the tomb features a single dome raised above a smaller octagonal drum with arched windows. Its exterior is adorned with bands of blue, white, and azure faience made of glazed tiles. These tiles come in various designs, including plain square or rectangular tiles painted and glazed in hues of Persian blue and white, tiles with floral designs in high relief, and terra-cotta plugs with geometric patterns painted in white or blue.
The tomb's architectural significance lies in its innovative design, which was among the first on the Indian subcontinent to feature an octagonal base. Its historical and cultural importance, coupled with its intricate tile decorations, make it a noteworthy candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.
