Lyndon Johnson learned days later about Mrs. Glenn’s speech impediment. Mrs. Johnson never mentioned the stuttering issue in any public forum, ever. When our leaders, and their wives, had class and dignity.

That's a real man there. And I had to laugh a little at the irony from Johnson's perspective. In those days, vice president was not a big deal - and a complete bane on Johnson's sheer ambition to be president. Here he is, thinking she's just turning away some random stranger who happens to have a TV crew, but would totally come to the door for the president. What he doesn't know is that she does know how big a deal it is to be greeted by the vice-president - and just does not feel comfortable dealing with the attention. And if asked would she come out for Kennedy, Annie would freak out, "Kennedy?! That's even worse!!!"
The story about this was that after John Glenn backed up his wife in not allow Vice President Johnson into the home, Chris Kraft, the boss, said that he was thinking of replacing john Glenn on this flight. He was told by his subordinates that if he did this was the one issue that the astronauts would come together as a brick wall against him and would refuse to fly. Then the matter would be turned over to President Kennedy. Chris Kraft was told that if Kennedy had to choice between a nameless government bureaucrat or the 7 hero astronauts, then he would lose big time. So he backed off in replacing Glenn.
Plot twist: Kennedy confronts Johnson and tells him to back down and stop being such a dick, so Johnson gets pissed and decides to assassinate Kennedy....

There was a reason. He wasn't dirty enough and then of course no one could have beaten Reagan that year. Absolutely no one. His time to run for President should have been in '64 or '68 but the country was a mess. His place was always going to be in the Senate.

John and Annie Glenn literally were friends from sharing a playpen as children. The way that he stood up for her is how men should act. That is a leader we need now.
I loved this film. Fyi, in the summer of '63, I was a 12 year-old Air Force brat living at Howard Air Force Base, Panama Canal Zone. One lazy afternoon I got wind through the grapevine that all the astronauts-Mercury and Gemini-had just landed there at Howard, and were waiting at the flight line to be officially greeted by the base commander. They’d come to Panama to attend Jungle Survival School. So, my buddy and I immediately raced down on our bicycles to the flight line, and--to our amazed joy--found them all standing in a row on the flight line, waiting. Glenn, Shepard, Grissom, all of 'em. My greatest heroes standing in a row. Open-mouthed, my buddy and I boldly walked up and introduced ourselves, going down the line, shaking their hands. They all gave us friendly handshakes and big, genuine, warm grins. I didn't wash my hand for a month. A strange moment in time and space; no one was there except we two kids and these internationally famous astronauts whose names were household words. Our absolute heroes. Oh.. and some other guy, not yet famous, a crack X-15 test pilot, an astronaut-in-training. He also came to attend Jungle Survival School. www.flickr.com/photos/mrdanbeaumont/10279500965
Such an inspirational film. The real interaction wasn't like this but this scene artfully condenses what the real events meant and gets the point across without stooping to insulting the audience. 2:10 - That looks kind of like Wally Schirra on the right of the scene. And I think Ed Harris does a good job with portraying John Glenn (now his hometown airport is named for him) in Columbus, OH.
Fun fact John Glenn's wingman in the Korean War was none other than baseball legend Ted Williams. They were assigned to VMF-311, Marine Aircraft Group 33 (MAG-33), based at the K-3 airfield in Pohang, South Korea flying F9F Panthers. Glenn described Williams as one of the best pilots he knew.
@hect190-909.......John P. Ryan was a very fine actor, despite often being cast in the 'guy you love to hate most' role. Ryan actually appeared in many truly excellent films [Five Easy Pieces, Dillinger, White Sands, Hoffa, Cotton Club etc]. I especially loved his role as Lieutenant Parmental in Jim McBride's remake of 'A bout de souffle' [''Breathless''] which was made in the same year as 'Right Stuff' [1983] - when he confronts cop-killer Jesse Lujack's [Richard Gere] girlfriend 'Monica' [Valerie Kaprisky]. And yes, Ryan's nostrils gave a brilliant performance too!
Most of this movie was filmed like a comedy. Yaeger talked about it in his book when he had to get together with Tom Wolfe to describe how to write some of the aviation scenes because Wolfe kept getting it all wrong. When he saw the movie for the first time he was astonished. He was also the one who caught Levon Helm smoking a joint behind his trailer in between scenes (Helm played Jack Ridley)
I love how the guy picks up the phone after Ed Harris hangs up and then he hangs it up. I don’t know what he was trying to accomplish but 😢in terms of the directing of the scene it really works! Just a great scene!😊

Williams landed a burning F9F and walked away from it
@bbb462cid yeah he got an airmedal for it. I heard he wad put in for dfc but it was downgraded.
one of my favorite scenes in the movie!!
And then Glenn wound up getting Kraft's job.
No not really. But Ed Harris, who played John Glenn here, wound up playing Kraft's successor, Gene Kranz.
This scene is one of the best and most memorable in the entire movie.
John P. Ryan's flared nostrils deserve an Oscar of their own.
What an amazing scene!
I’m very happy that they made the female characters 3 Dimensional and important to how these men became astronauts
Helps that Tom Wolfe wrote such a great book.
Great movie.
2:00 SHOVE!
"Panzies!!! Cows!! Gladiolus'!!!" 2nd best line of the movie...after Pancho Barnes' "Now wha'd you 2 pudknockers hav' huh?"
"ISN'T THERE ANYBODY WHO CAN DEAL WITH A HOUSEWIFE?!"
Helios Eusebio “Curses! Cows! Gladiolas!”
Nope. Not in those days. Trust me on that.
One of the greatest movies ever.
This is why you don't show up unannounced.
What a career Ed Harris has, astronot in Mercury mission, after that mission director in Apollo 13... boy oh boy...
A movie about badass astronaut pilots I’ll have to watch this
Did you watch it? It's awesome
This was such a great scene!!!
That was fucking awesome.
Just beautiful!
Brilliant movie!!
I love LBJ's little tantrum and pout
Worst President in American history.
Love the actor who played Vice President Johnson.
Donald Moffat. He was really good in this one.
His pecker is in no one's pocket.
Donald Moffat also played the President in Clear and Present Danger. Slimy!!!
Also the Antarctic camp commander in John Carpenter's "The Thing"
I remember him as the android who drove the electric car in the Logan's Run tv show.
Ed Harris has been an old man for sixty years
Kinda 😂😂 but he's cool.
praise the LORD GOD for men like this
Trying to figure out what about The Right Stuff influenced Jordan Peele's Us. I wonder if it is the speech issue John' wife has.
These are MEN right here!
Do not mess with the military!, Doesn't matter what branch, you mess with one, you mess with them all.🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Love that scene.
Lyndon Johnson: "Is there ANYBODY who can deal with a housewife?!?!"
Mr. Johnson, you are Vice President of the United States. You are basically just a glorified housewife.
It seems that the PR aspect of the early space program got a little out of hand. I'm sure the 7 guys sometimes got pretty sick of it.
A world of respect for LBJ, but you don't drop in on someone without calling first and *asking politely!*
I love this scene so much... I wish we had more John Glenn's in this country.
2:17 The limo JFK was shot in was used for more than a decade after the assassination. It was refitted and put back into service as the Presidential limo.
Woody from Toy Story 2:22
😄😄😄😄 Great clip.. specially the end of it..
That was way too great and way too funny!
