Americans perceptions of race are not universal. South Africa has a whole category of mixed race people called 'coloured' and Tyla is one of those. She is ethnically multiracial with Zulu, white and Mauritanian-Indian heritage. She does fit into the South African category of coloured like those ones in CapeTown whose ancestors were mixed raced. Trevor Noah on the other hand is simply biracial and he identifies as 'black' because his mother is a black African woman who raised him in a black African household. Technically, Trevor is more black than Tyla, both culturally and genetically. The lesson here is that Americans need to understand that that their definition of black is not universal. I am a black woman, from East Africa, with 100% indigenous African ancestry from several countries in that region. Mixed race people have the freedom to identify themselves as they see fit, I dont think it really matters elsewhere in the world like it does in the US.

what confuses me is Trevor Noah and Rege Jean Page are no different from her are from South African and they never said they are coloured in Interviews they identify as black, is some racist people in South Africa considered themself coloured or white to be above the blacks in South Africa is it suppose to be a hierarchy placement I mean we still know South Africa whites was one of the most racist people and still is in the 21st century so I wonder if some who are mixed with white grew up with some racist beliefs that they are better than blacks that's the vibe I get from her smfh.

the funny thing is her label sold her and her style to the black American community to try to break out and be successful and she uses the black South Africans Dances in her performances so is she also a Culture Vulture using the black South Africans Dances while not identifying as black she is not using any European style dancing in her performances just saying.

Tyla is of the African diaspora, which is also known as, Black. Just because she doesn't identify with the semantics of American political identification doesn't mean she's not of African-descent which is ultimately a black person and the semantics don't matter whatsoever. Tyla is bringing African culture to a global stage. All this dissection of her racial identity is asinine.

Race isn't real, it's one of the world's greatest lie and only made real by us buying into the concept and the media's insistence on it! ETHNICITY is what's real.
CULTURE & ETHNICITY matters, it is what binds us beyond skin color, and other insignificant differences.
ETHNICITY: the quality or fact of belonging to a population group or subgroup made up of people who share a common cultural background or descent.

Out of respect Tyla identifies as Black in America (which is the right thing to do). Only coloured in South Africa. If she never had to mention it she would not have, but with the internet these days being the way it is, it kept coming up in the comments and so it was latched onto as a controversial topic for gains, views and likes.

Not offended at all. You have yo understand the concept of race outside America where the one drop rule isn't a thing, in South Africa mixed race people have distinct identity. Its a spill over from apartheid where there was a tiered race system. Its the same in neighbouring countries.

This whole thing has made grown adults seem silly and illiterate. Black Africans are Black. And Black Americans are African in heritage. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Obviously. She is mixed. Part Black. Part non-Black. Calling her "not Black" is as ridiculous as insisting that she called herself "only Black." Whoever is doing this needs to grow up. It sounds like middle-school talk.

I don’t know what everyone is going off about and being mad for. People call all black mixed people black anyways. Doesn’t matter if your mamma is white or your daddy is while as long as long as one of your parents is black you are automatically considered black. And I personally think that is ridiculous as stupid. There should be a term for mixed people, because they are not black. If they are as much black as they are the white or whatever other mixed parent is.
