- We will cover the 4th and final type of EMF that the building biology profession recognizes as so-called "Dirty Electricity", also known as Electromagnetic Interference, or EMI. Dirty electricity is the magnetic and electric fields emitted into living spaces from higher harmonic frequencies, above the fundamental frequency of house wiring at 60 Hz. Dirty electricity is generated by a number of devices and may cause health symptoms in people often going under-diagnosed.
Learn about these and strategies to reduce them renovation and new construction. This is the 5th part of our ongoing session called Reducing occupant exposure to EMFs in residential construction series. *Note you do not need to watch these in any order.

For a good example of the sound of dirty electricity you can use an AM radio near a power saving lightbulb. The power saving bulb will create the noise for you by rapidly switching on and off as a means of power saving. This creates transients which offers a recognizable coarse sound that's very different from the 60 hertz buzz or hum of an incandescent bulb using the same AM radio set down below 540 off a station in static. If you try a lightbulb and there isn't a huge difference in AM radio sound you need to try another. It's an unmistakable sound of an awful coarse grind almost like a rapid fire weapon in your radio.

No. It is physically impossible for "dirty electricity" to affect SMPS. SMPS like computer power supplies eat "dirty electricity" as well as clean electricity and produce clean and stable output regardless of input "dirtiness".
I think yes. A lot of people have the problem of increased input lag. And how to fix it is still unclear.

Could you use an isolation transformer to prevent switching harmonics coming back onto building wiring from computer power supplies where swapping to a linear type isn't feasible?
" Yes, having the electric utility install an isolation transformer will significantly reduce incoming voltage transients of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), also known as “dirty electricity”. A one-to-one isolation transformer can be used on a property when your building is the only utility customer on that transformer. Much more likely, the building shares the transformer with other customers, which requires a different solution, such as a Dairyland isolation device. These are all very expensive solutions. A much more affordable and commonly used solution is to have an electrician install a whole-building dirty electricity reduction device at the building’s electrical service entrance, such as the SaticShield Power Perfect Wire-in Box or Sine Tamer." How do you know if it is a wiring error? How can that be evaluated? I got a trifield tf2 meter and our electrical reading were high. I read an article that said it should not be above 10, and the head of kid's bed was over 200.
