I reckon they couldn't leave them on good terms, firstly because that way there would've needed to have been contact between them yet they had to write Aaron "moving on" (as if) and secondly they probably wanted to end it dramatically to confirm the maximum amount of angst and drama in the future, in case the story would continue. Here's hoping Ryan does return - along with better writers - and we can have the beautiful reunion 3.0 we deserve!
