- • The initial 352 takes for the “flower stand sequence” in City Lights, when the tramp first meets the flower girl (played by Virginia Cherrill), were shot early in 1929. In January 1930, Chaplin shot 99 more takes of the same scene, making a total of 451 takes. From City Lights © Roy Export SAS

"Did you pick it up, sir?" That one line, plus her unfocused eyes and feeling around on the ground, are all the audience needs to know she's blind. A less skilled filmmaker would have her say, "I'm sorry, sir, I'm blind, where's the flower?" But Chaplin knew how to show and not tell. Brilliant.
Very true, especially to think that Chaplin had the courage to made silents when everyone was working on talkies.
the scene with the blind girl is far out the best i ever saw, in my life , it hit me hard, it brought tears to my eyes, so perfect well played, this cant be copied.
poverty was a big thing in that time. this movie is a real masterpiece. R.I.P charlie and virginia.
My favorite Charlie Chaplin movie.. Charlie had a rare gift not just with physical comedy but he always added a sad concept as well as comedy into all his movies without leaving out the moral lesson. We still love you Charlie. 📽🎥🎬🎞💜💜💜💜💜
Beautifully said 🙏 I was born 92 & I grew up watching Chaplin. I remember watching Robert Downey Jr. play him in the movie, I watched it with my mom & great grandma on VHS, & since Charlie was more or less her era, it was great to have that experience of watching that with her then. If anything I was the one to pick out a classic film more than anything lol I'm blessed to have had those times watching classic movies as a kid my my fam or by myself & Chaplin the man, the myth, the icon, the legend is why I love em so much to this day. Also Buster Keaton, Orson Welles, Bette Davis, James Cagney, James Dean, Dean Martin all my top favorites from the classic era.
The humanity that's conveyed in this scene is amazing. Chaplin was an incredible talent.
One of the most beautiful movie in history
Im 36 now. When i was 4, all my grandparents had on VHS was Charlie Chaplin movies and Some Like it Hot. I'd watch it over and over and over again. This was part of my upbringing. Now i can watch small clips of it through my phone. Its wonderful.
Almost the same here, but 35, and only one of my grandparents (my favorite one). They are the best. Greetings from Perú.
What a genius! How he planned this part! what a genius!....We can only envy him....
I can’t watch this without crying. Every tine.
I found city lights to be a Innocent love story. Charlie always put on a fine performance.
Just one word "Genius"
Изврстан филм,прелепа музика. Можда и његов најбољи филм.
City Light's is a unique story of humanity 👍 The last scene is unforgettable👌
This scene and the last one are my favourite from the movie. In my opinion, City Lights and The Kid are the greatest Chaplin movies. ❤❤❤
VickyQueen You and me 🖤
I couldn't agree more. 💜💜💜
Yeah
Gold Rush is pretty great as well
Great dictator too
A beautiful scene and a laugh-out-loud moment when she unknowingly throws the water over him.
True legend.
The flower stand sequence, is one of the most important scenes in City Lights. It establishes the little tramp as a rich man in the mind of the beautiful flower girl. This is done, by the car door slam, because only rich men drive cars, and in our case, even richer men have drivers. The little tramp believes, as he quietly tip toes away, that he can ‘get the girl’, by pretending to be a gentleman. In doing so, the major theme for our movie is set.
I don't know that the Tramp, this early in the narrative, already wants to "get the flower girl." I think the Tramp simply didn't have the heart to shatter her illusion that he was just some wealthy customer she hadn't met before. His feelings for her do grow as they come to know one another in the progression of the story, though, so before long he DOES, as you say, "want to get her."
@@vincentsartain3061 I don't think he thought he had a chance with her early on, and he acts indifferently with her in the beginning of the scene. But, I think he is 'taken' with her beauty (as the scene continues), as he sneaks back to sit with her. His feelings for her will grow for her, through out the movie.
@@davidlawrence2508 I harbor no doubt that the Tramp was "smitten" with the flower girl from the first instant he encountered her (while, as you say, playing it "reticent" at first because he doesn't have any reason to suppose she'd ever give him the time of day if she had been sighted.). And you and I can obviously agree that his feelings for her continue to grow from that point on. But no doubt in his day, "the Little Fellow" has fallen for many women as well as finding many other ladies very attractive. Heck, maybe he's even the same Tramp as portrayed in the previous entry, THE CIRCUS, in which he had been smitten by the circus girl but decides in the end that she'd be better off with her other suitor, the circus strongman.
The tramp in this film thinks that he is a gentleman even though he is poor and the world has changed so much around him people think he’s a ghost with his tattered appearance and ruffled clothes he shows that he would still like to be respected even when mocked by kids.
I need in-person conversations like this. People don’t talk about meaning anymore. My old soul self is satisfied for now.
So big he survived the crash of ‘29. A technician, athlete and artist like no other.
Thank you
How much can one say with silence.💞💞💞
This video is an example on how to be nice to someone with a disability, I am legally blind due to Retinitis Pigmentosa (rod cone dystrophy) when I was first diagnosed with RP my friends didn’t know how to be nice to me anymore. And I explained just like before!
Thanks for sharing that comment ☺
I had a childhood friend who was totally blind. Much like the film, I first met him sitting by himself, and I wanted to make a new friend. I treated him just like anyone else.
@@5roundsrapid263 Fair play! Are you a fan of the Brigadier? Nicholas Courtney used to be a neighbour of some of my family in London. He was a nice old fella!
@@MartinMcAvoy Exactly! I love it when people get the reference. I wish I could have met him. I heard he was a very kind man.
This is One of The Most Beautiful Scenes in All Of Charlie Chaplin Silent Films. Such Emotion, Its Genuine. Superb!
Nice acting
Everyone goes on about Citizen Kane as the best film ever made. City Lights was 9 years earlier and imho was just as good.
More than words can say, thank you charlie
Apparently Chaplin took 9 months to film this one scene, he wanted it to be perfect and so it was.
That water scene 😂🎉❤
Super movie
You can see what good actors they are since Chaplin didn't like her and he even tried to get her replaced.
In a perfect world he deserved one oscar for year honorary
My hero.. Charlie chaplin
This scene took 342 takes
Part way through filming he fired Virginia Cherrill and tried one or two replacements. He wasn't happy with them and asked Virginia to come back. She came back, but only after he agreed to her demand to significantly increase her pay. This last scene made her pay worth every penny.
O eliften hayır gelmez, city lights'a selam olsun.
The best film I hv watched
I never knew that such a traditional Spanish song as La Violetera sounded on a Chaplin movie.
When trying to be charming and watching closely to a lovely blind lady goes wrong with an accidental splash of water to your face 😂…cough cough I mean this is so lovely of a relationship blossoming
O melhor filme de Chaplin em todos os tempos. E Virginia Cherril foi a atriz mais linda e deslumbrante com quem ele já trabalhou no cinema.

This kinda love.. 💕💗
Commovente. Tutte le volte che lo rivedo......
Excellent!
The Chaplin adoration club/ society knows no doubt, no questions, no negativity, only unquestioned loyalty and hosannas. But think about 400 plus takes on one scene. Over and over and over and repeat 300 plus times. A scene in silence, no lines to flub. No lighting issues, no prop falling and ruining the scene. No for CC, it just "didn't feel right". So again and again and again. Really? No wonder young unknowns played such important roles. A seasoned actress with an established career would have walked out. Before actors had a guild or any restrictions on dictatorial directors.
342 takes!
Bravo
True legend
It's an old and beautiful movie. None of the actors are probabably alive. 😅
he made her say "flower sir?" 342 times to get the right take.
Sublime.

Fico muito emocionado
Láska je kvet,.. ktorý nepozná nie!
Chaplin demanded 342 takes for this one scene. And I think she says (reading lips) only 25 cents which would be about 5 dollars in inflation today.
Aynısı en büyük Şaban Türkiye'nin gururu
What other employer do you know pays you money to have you throw water on them and not even look at them, almost as if they're worthless.
So that little scene took over 100 takes?! Geez. Chaplin wasnt playin ha.
Actually over 300! He had not written a script (which was typical for him) and he thought it would be much easier to improvise a scene where the woman mistakes him for a rich man. He was very, very wrong.
560 days in total for that 1 scene
@@paulcandelent2044 NO SCENE is worth that many takes. That would never ever happen today. Amazingly, that film was a huge success. U would’ve thought by the ‘30s people would’ve been tired of watching a silent movie.
This scene take 5 days to Charli Chaplin due to non-cooperation of Verginia cherrill.

Quelle tendresse dans cette musique ! Quand je pense que Charlot en a êtê tellement privé avec son frére quand ils n.é taient que des enfants ! J.ecouterai toujours cette musique avec émotion ! Mme L
Dil ke ❤️❤️❤️ nice chawaesh👍??
Ms. Cherrill was, for about a year, Mrs. Cary Grant.
There is a movie called "En Büyük Şaban" and it is Turkish made with the most loved actor of it's time Kemal Sunal. In that movie this scene is honored by the makers. In some way that scene impressed me as much as the original by Chaplin.

The movie “City lights”, by Charlie Chaplin, is a master piece. It remains one of the 52 essential movies, by Turner Classic Movies, and one of the best movies ever made. It is the greatest film by Charlie Chaplin, who is one of the true geniuses of the silent era. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/TkF1we_DeCQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Dom%C3%ADnioP%C3%BAblico
Operator, did they really film this for 500 days? #11:59
Genial
When I was 8 years old, me, my dad and my mom was preparing afternoon meals for us in kitchen while me and my dad were watching Charlie Chaplin series in our local cartoon channel with Tamil subtitles. Whenever Charlie Chaplin's show started I always change the channel because as a child I hate black and white movies. But my dad told me "hey don't change the channel, it's... it's Charlie!!! Charlie Chaplin!!!" I was in confused face how did my dad knew him. He said Charlie such a great artist, for 60's he's the Mr.Bean, One you'll understand. After 6 years, I was 14 years old. I was watching Movies Now channel, that time I was bored idk what to watch and thinking about what'll do. And then I saw title card "City Lights". I gave it a try, watched whole movie and I admitted what my dad said it was right. Now I'm 19 years old. My favourites are City Lights and Modern Times. Rest In Peace God's Faithful Servant(My Dad) ❤
Now I'm 30, I've watched it for the first time in my teenage years. All I'm gonna say is wait for some years and watch it again. bcz I Just revisited this movie and writing this comment in tears with a heart been stabbed a thousand times 😭 it really hits different as I age 😭

I think it's important not to look or look
-how"d did she knew att 0,40 sec, that he stopped?...still Great Film.
@@jorgemolakk Chaplin did something like 342 retakes of this scene to get it right. The trouble he had was in creating a credible scenario to make the blind girl wrongly assume he was a wealthy customer, without the Tramp having to outright lie to her. Thus, this sequence (after many grueling days of shooting everything else that DIDN'T work.) I think these factors explain why the sequence seems "too long" in your estimation, but Chaplin really had to struggle with keeping his Tramp character's code of honor intact and this scene gets the job done.
