For me, this film had the effect of an electroconvulsive shock. After I left the theatre, I briefly saw the world through a new lens. Everything was much clearer, more vivid and intense, stripped of false pretense, infused with a sense of hope and despair in equal measure. That is the power of cinema and First Reformed unleashes it like a nuclear bomb.

Watched this in a theater by myself and an elderly couple. Thank goodness they sat in the back, for never have I seen a movie in the cinema that leaves me staring blankly at the screen with my mouth agape and tears in my eyes, my mind a whirl. A provoking and startling watch, that has left me deep in thought into the night. Phenomenal. Thank you.

As a fan of many of Ethan Hawke's performances, I can honestly say without a doubt this is the best performance of his career. Much of the intensity that comes from the film comes from his performance, whether he is eventually going to break. Watched as usual on boxxy software with great dubbing. Don't miss it

Boxxy? What's that? Is it hard to install? Is it free or cost $? Does it work on ANY phone? Currently using a Motorola android, but hoping to return to iPhone asap. Lost mine in January in ICU, laundry service we employee found it but wanted to charge me ransom for it, bragging about finding expensive phones, watches, etc
I learned how to stream for free while using android in 2017, but then when I returned to iPhone... I had to delete & reinstall the app daily bc Apple would restrict the application "owner" n the app would reconfigure the app, changing their name & info
I saw the film before seeing any trailers, so for me this was two straight minutes of "that was a great scene" - "oh, THAT was a great scene" - "oh my god THAT scene was amazing"

i found this movie accidentally and decided to watch it using boxxy software. it was a good decision. i used subtitle for understand it better.

This film is underrated. The cinematography is stunning and Ethan hawke's preformence is amazing. I get it's a smaller budget but the film deserves more credit

there are always a handful of superior films each year that are exclusively (or almost exclusively) snubbed by the academy , this is one of them. remarkable film, one of the year's very best.

Schrader is a master. One of our great living filmmakers. His eye, scripts, and style will define cinema for a generation to come.
I found his explanation of the films ending to be quite cowardly.
You know he's a huge pedo, abusing child actors/actresses @ Nickelodeon studios. Another person to add with Diddy & all the others.
One of the very best American films of the 2010s, but I'm not sure I could stomach watching it at this moment in time. It doesn't just prod the soul; it impales it.
Humanity needs to be impaled by the truth, we're too damn stubborn avoiding it.
This is a really great movie. It's one of the best films of 2018 in my opinion. The story is engaging, Ethan Hawke's performance is amazing, and it deals with themes that really make you think about the movie days after you've seen it. I give it an 8/10.

@@alsharpe He never left but he hasn't made anything good/memorable since Bringing out the Dead with Martin Scorsese and even that film didn't do all that great critically but I personally think that film is one of the most underrated films of the 90s.
I hope this is the film that brings the recognition Ethan Hawke deserves, truly one of the most under appreciated actors working today.
I always enjoy the choices Ethan makes when it comes to the films he takes.

I watched it the other day and I can surely say that I was both delighted and not disappointed. It’s like a perfect combo of Bresson’s “Diary of a Country Priest” and Schrader’s own “Affliction”. And concerning all the disappointment of films that he’s made throughout the 2010’s, I’m SO goddamn happy that he made this film. It’s honestly one of his best (right up their with “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” and even “Taxi Driver”). I seriously want to go watch it again and just admire how my favorite screenwriter managed to pull off this spiritual masterpiece of a film. It’s probably one of the best films I’ve seen in 2018 thus far. Goddamnit, I loved this film.

A24's "First Reformed" re-images the Christian film as a terrifying authentic film; a dark and brutal odyssey from stability to uncertainty to fear. The menacing yet intangible horror that not only Ethan but also Lustmord provides, is an experience that can only to be had in a theatre. There are so many scenes where I sat and pondered with Toller about the authenticity of his dichotomy. The acting is incredibly real, which made the story become a real force of nature on screen and within the mind of the viewer. "First Reformed" was an immensely engaging film on both an emotional and ethical level; constantly combating certainty with uncertainty, anger with expression, and religious duties with love. The metaphors and symbolism runs deep yet not fully reliant. Picking up on them only supplements the uncomforting essence that comes with having faith being put to the test. "First Reformed" is a rare and intriguing example of theological inquiry in American cinema! This movie was raw, bleak, wintry, and downright disturbing! What a fucking movie!

I finally saw this last year, and after thinking about it for a while, I think this is one of the greatest American films of the 21st century so far. Honestly might be my number one on that list.

I met Paul Schrader at a screenwriting masterclass at the Broadway Cinema in Nottingham about ten years ago. Was only 14 but he was kind enough to answer my crap question about whether the quality of filmmaking equipment is important, and he told me to just use whatever I could get my hands on and start making films...big fan of his, glad to hear he's back on form!
Should have got the Oscar. Should have got Best Picture too.

This movie looks amazing, but as someone who grew up in a (Dutch) Reformed church in upstate NY... I've never seen a Reformed minister wearing a clerical collar.

This film was a surprise, really thought provoking Flick. Paul Schrader at his best here. The movie reminded me a little of Taxi Driver in some way of form but obviously the stories are quite opposite from each other but there is for sure some similarities that you can pick up.
