Thank you dear Phil for giving us Depeche Mode, today.
We remember Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher.
In 1979, at the age of 17, he switched from electronic bass to synthesizer and founded the band "Composition of Sound" together with Vince Clarke and Martin Gore. After Dave Gahan joined the band as singer, they renamed themselves to "Depeche Mode".
Fletcher took on more organisational than creative tasks in the band. He is said to have kept the band together in difficult times and, for example, reached a compromise between Gore and Gahan when they argued about who should contribute how many songs to the album "Playing The Angel". However, disputes between him and Alan Wilder led to the latter parting ways with Depeche Mode.
Alan Wilder had done most of the work in the studio until then. As Fletcher was the only member of the band who had never written a song, he was occasionally criticised for not contributing anything musically to the band.
Apart from being a fabulous keyboard player, who also succeeded Vince Clarke after the latter left the band in 1981, "Fletch" was simply an anchorman - and someone whose "cheerleader" behavior helped fans feel closer to the band they loved.
Andrew Fletcher died of natural causes. He was married to Gráinne Mullan from 1991 until his death. They had two children together.
Thank you 🙏 dear Phil, for this highly sonorous presentation of "Leave In Silence" from the LP "A Broken Frame" (1981) and for the legendary "Personal Jesus" from the "Violator" album (1990).

Please can you play Yellow Submarine?
Sigh. Sixty is far too soon. He was just starting his life when they released this. As if DM needed any more melancholy to their music. Sure glad I saw them last tour. It truly felt like a pilgrimage. Sigh.
