You should ground the starter to the metal casing not the solenoid terminal. That terminal is to connect the positive to the motor whenever the solenoid is engaged. What you have done is to get the solenoid to connect the positive to the negative every time you engage the solenoid with the wire.. That could also fry the battery. The correct way is to connect the negative to the metal body of the starter and the positive to the solenoid terminal that does not have the rubber cover . Please check that the starter maybe a 24V one.
That is obviously a Delco style 12v alternator, so would be a 12v system. Therefore the batteries should be wired in parallel for 12v out @ double the amps.
Glad I am getting to watch you and wiley starting heavy equipment up
Again
You both have an amazing amount of patience and perseverance. I'm looking forward to Part 2!
俺も見たいです
I cannot believe the patience and perseverance you guys have. I'm overwhelmed just looking at it!
What a great friendship you both have!! Hank you take care of him!!
There are some 80 year old guys still going strong my Dad just built a house last year and set the trusses. He turned 87 in January and tore down his old shop and is currently building his new one along with another new shed. I also heard about a 90 year old guy that still was running a Cat dozer locally.
I was screaming "you gotta ground it to the starter" lol
The machine is from the mid 1980s thru mid 1990s and it’s about a 25000lbs machine. Also I think it’s a 24 volt system. Can’t wait for next video
Nothing much better than 2 best of friends sitting on a machine someone else was disgusted with, halfway taken apart either in-between breaking it and fixing it or just plain old forgotten about and given up on. Thank you for not giving up, doing the right thing knowing that starter was already shot (not at the end yet, but I'm a guessin')
edit: I'll come back to see part 2!! I promise!
I'm sure you don't run the ground to that starter lug it's grounded by chassis. The lugs on the starter are for positive lead and accessories only no ground. Then you have the signal wire from cab to spade terminal on starter.
watching from nova Scotia canada Kentville this place they took all trains out moved them too halifax, they have replaced a lot apples with winery god bless
Lol lol Wiley that’s 20 points for you lol less Hanken and more cranking that is perfect!
Hey Hank, you didn’t find hope, you found Wiley!!
I'm starting to sweat just watching!!! Incredible determination and patience it's hard to not get a little cranky under a situation like this and Hank and Willey stayed cool as a cucumber!!!! Can't wait for part 2. Great vidio. Thanks
Hopefully, you guys can get it started can't wait for part 2
God Bless 🙌
I love watching y'all you sem to get along very well. Please take a picture of the batterys. Before you start. Great video 👍👍
When you were working on the nests in the engine compartment, and reminiscing upon life. I couldn't help but notice all the trees and bushes getting in the way, which you hadn't cut down... Reminded me of when we worked in the Sahara Forrest....
The final bit with the starter... You wired the battery across the solenoid contacts, so when the solenoid operated, you were shorting out the battery. You needed to connect the negative cable to the metal case of the starter, not the solenoid contacts. Also remember that you need to earth the metal of the machine, not the paintwork.
OH NO!! It’s Wiley time, lol!!
I was always told skinning cats was skipping rocks on a creek
Wiley how do u put up hanks jokes what is ur secret 😝
CCCCCCASH......
Hey Hank , sometimes when you tell a jock i feel that wily reacting like : 🤦🤦🤦in his mind 😂😂😂.
Serious man Wily 🤨
Who else was screaming the safety lever was down, when they were trying to start it!!
Lol I noticed that to
Safety lever and 24V series connection .. hard to watch this one 😲
I definitely was. They are busting their tails off .and it's possibly an easy fix.
Me too . . . 😂😂😂
The only thing I was screaming was digital multi-meter. And 10 seconds since I bring it up, they saw the value. Lol.
hey Hank why do you not wear long pants when you are around old rusty machines that way you will not get scratched I know it is hard too work on old machines when it is hot ,but you should have protection, I worked farms and I wouldn,t wear shorts when I was working on the farms even when we were haying, anyway keep safe god bless
Tremendous effort, Wily. I see you laying and kneeling in the worst, most uncomfortable places - above and below those machines. I always wonder why you don't bring some cardboard or furniture blanket to lay on. You and I aren't getting any younger, buddy. It's time to try to be a little nicer to your body. You're amazing.
What is the name of part two? We would like to see it but don’t know how. I will keep looking while waiting for your answer.
i hate to say it but watching you guys work is like watching grass grow
I have a John Deere 490 just like this one. It’s a 24 volt system. Also the lever below the left controll lever should be in the up position when trying to start.
Some Macks have a auxiliary transmission with a 2 speed +reverse and some have a 3 speed +reverse main transmission does not have reverse they are a blast to drive
When I was a kid, my dad was a heavy equipment operator and when he ran a bull dozer he was called a "catskinner."
Helps if you put the ground cable on the starter and not the second post that comes off that is a positive
CW means CLOCKWISE (as the clock turns) or RIGHT HAND CCW means COUNTER CLOCKWISE (opposite the clock) or LEFT HAND
CCW = counter clockwise CW = Clockwise. Just for the memory bank.
The reason we miss part 2 (of any video ) is finding it I love your videos thanks
Ground goes to where the starter bolts to the engine and the pos to the terminal then connect the little wire to the pos and it will work fine if you didn't fry it by grounding the other pos terminal when you grounded it. Most likely its still good. Whenever you see a plastic insulator around a terminal it most of the time a pos.
You had start connected wrong. You had positive connected to one side of solenoid and ground connected to the other side of solenoid, so when you energized the solenoid it crated a direct shot across solenoid. Should connect positive to one side off solenoid and ground starter case.
watch both of your videos but you two together are the best
Wiley is the man !!
The lever with red knob needs to be pulled backwards by Left leg
Use the air compressor to blow debris. Nobody is talking and blowing at the same time.
You didn't buy a powerful enough blower, Henry. When you started pushing the button on that blower, all of that debris stayed where it was.
Pretty sure it's 24 volt. My 690 is. Thats why you only had 1 jump wire pos to neg
Willie just gave you a new idea for tee shirts "Quit Hanking and Start Cranking"
All the water that is in the bucket ya can put it in the radiator that way ya can run it longer when it starts
hay (Hamiltonville Farm) test the starter the right way ground it by the case you all grounded it by the positive going to the starter motor its self thats way the wire got hot you was shorting out the batteryhay
Thank you for your service.
Absolutely I'd like to see a part 2! 😎👍 ......still my favorite "not mechanics" on UA-cam!! 😂
It is a 24 volt system.... hook positive off one battery to negative on other battery with jumper and use positive off other to hook to starter and other battery ground to ground on machine which makes 24 volts wired in series.....starter is barely working because it only has half the voltage to it, power not coming on due to only half the needed voltage
24 volt. Have one in Guyana, SA. Good old machine. Serial number likely starts with CK and the machine is 40 years old. I spend half my time working on it, but when it works, it's good. Just ordered a rotating seal kit.
Where you put the ground cable on is a power wire from the solenoid to the motor of the starter the ground should go to the housing of the starter hence why you’re cables got hot
Lol I just finished a popsicle as soon as you said popsicles!😂👍
I love your videos with wiley in them,y'all are a great team
Term "Skin a Cat" at my house was used for showing a different way of doing something. (Usually the Correct way, because I was doing it wrong or way to difficult even though it was succesful)
Less Hanking… more cranking! Now there’s a Teeshirt for ya
The ground goes through the master switch
Hank back in the 90s there was a song called Wiggle it just a little bit by a group called 2 in a room. So every time you and Wily are messing with wires ya'll can sing it. 👊🏾😆
Awesome part one, Hank and Wiley can't wait for part two. Appreciate you guys 👍
Ya'll had the positive right but the neg should of been connected to where the bolts go thru the starter armature. then jump it...
It takes a lot longer to heal a briar than a bee sting. Take a leaf blower to these for the leaves and such in the cab maybe; pine needles do Not blow well unless on cement for sure.
Ever hear of JB 80? Really works good! It soaks all the way to the end of bolts instantly.
Not only was the safety lever down, you can't drown the starter to a post you have to start it to the case. The reason it got so hot was because you created a direct short by grounding that terminal
What camera you using looks good!
🤷🏻♂️
hank i hope theirs a key that will start the excavator
I wish the hole family succes and I love thé video’s ❤
Awesome video Hank and Wiley!!!! Hank keep Hankin and don't worry about Wiley he's just jealous he ain't that happy lol
Finally a difficult one to start.
For sure
I'd like to come on. Your guys as a program one time and help you out. I like working on diesels and other vehicles and everything else.
According to John Deer specs it's 21000 lbs or just over 10 tons . . .
Wiley you were looking at Hank face to face lol
Good job and God bless y'all
The 490's were made in the 90's iirc.. looks in decent condition. This should be a really good part 2
This was a hard one thanks Hank and Wylie
WELP BOYS, I have gotta call it - you mentioned early in the video the weather was good for ducks, well now, what you got there is a DEAD DUCK, with what was only one good paddling foot! Sell it for scrap...ain't worth messing with.
Great watching again it's a tidy looking derre
I will definitely watch part two God bless
Can't wait for part 2 😊
There's 50 of us yelling just ground it to the starter 😅😅😅😅
If you get it running and working it would be good for the farm, digging the pond.
Engine 4276 maybe. from a John Deer 490D spec. PDF on Deer. is there a lever inside of the cab to throw when you sit down ?? Skin a cat - I heard it is Hard as skinning a cat. Likely different ways for different parts of the country.
21:27 you can see both batteries are hooked up
Unfortunately wally was wrong... You needs positive to negative... To make it 24...
Hank was right with the series for volt gain
Parallel for amp gain.
Love the videos. Both yall remind me of my dad.
Wally... In a bit of a tud today... Lmao
What happened to part two?
Where you were grounding the starter is not a ground
I enjoy both of Y'all
Was wondering what you were doing.
They came out with the 490d in 89
Omg you guys are so lucky and so talented. Wish I could find one like you.
Thanks!
Hank, Wiley's gonna haul off and slap you one of these days. I just started watching the video. Looking forward to the antics
I haven’t seen a starter with a ground connection it usually is grounded threw the case of the starter .
Awesome video as always. You have to keep those jokes coming. Can’t wait for the second video. 🤙🏻
Thank you for watching 😁👍
Come on part 2. Got my popcorn waitin!
32 thousand and 8/8 of one pound
You could have completed your PPE with a keen set of flip flops.
Thanks!
Man that's awesome! We sure appreciate that.
i see yall use the hot shot wasp spray.. the raid wasp and hornet killer kills on contact.. id recommend that..and it has a great range.
I'm interested in it
I wish I was on one of your adventures. Looks like too much fun
Keep swinging guys
