    I put the WRC on a 6' tripod, a 102" as whip, a single tuned radial on a kite winder, running over to a 5' fiberglass driveway marker. It's a pile-up maker.

    I've got a 50' steel tape measure with a button to lock it at any point. I connect the end to the counterpoise contact on the antenna, then extend it out and punch the button where I want to stop. This seems to work well. And it still works as a tape measure!

    I never really messed around. Always used all three fully extended. It was my main antenna for about 6 months. You’d be surprised the amount of Dx you can collect with the Silver Bullet 1000 TIA.

      That’s the way I do it. Got 40 down to 1.8 then I use the tuner to flatten out.

    Radials sitting on the ground don't need to be a specific length. Especially portable when you can't account for the conductivity and permittivity of the soil. You'll find six 16 1/2 foot radials to be just as good as three 33 foot radials, except much easier to deploy. Don't overthink this.

      Pretty much the same thing I discovered.. I found unwinding 3 33' radials tedious, decided to cut them into 4 pieces each. So now I have 12 8.25' radials and it actually seems to work better. I think a more dense coverage (more radials in the "circle" is more important than length. On 20m with 12 radials and a 213" whip (shortened) I can usually get pretty dang close to 1:1

    I saw one video where one operator was using 24 33 foot radials with an 80 to 10 Wolf River coil and a 17 foot collapsible whip antenna with good swr’s across all bands.

      That's a lot of radials to spread out for a portable operation, but it is quite effective. Especially for a permanent installation.

    I use the four radials that came with my TIA 1000. I like the tape idea. thanks! 👍

    I run 9 radials with 3 bundled together with crimped and soldered terminal rings on each leg of the oversized tripod. Cut to16', it only takes me 10-15 minutes to set up the antenna, tune for resonance and get on the air. I anchor the ends using rocks or 3/16" x 6" aluminum tent stakes pushed through crimped ring terminals into the ground, to keep the radials stretched tight. I solder only the terminal rings that attach to the tripod so that the staked ends of the terminals can easily break free to reduce the tripping hazard caused by putting out longer temporary radials.

    I use 3-33' that came with it. I added 6-8' it helped on 20m. I attached with blade connectors.

    Great Video. I have never checked to see if I need radials for my portable antennas. Now I will look and plan accordingly . Thanks Michael.

    I use the radials I got with my ATAS-25, and I most always get a good match. The ATAS radials are three different lengths and it seems a good match finds it way somewhere between these radials. I use a big alligator clip for quick deployment. I stretch them out and retain them with large garden spikes pushed into the ground. I made a small loop at the end of each radial to accommodate the spikes. Seems to work for me.

    For my Wolf River Coils Antenna, I user the 3 radials but I wrap each radial around a 12"piece of small PVC pipe.and it seems to still work well. I've made several contacts from my QTH in Georgia to Italy and several other DX contacts. Now with my Comet HFJ 350M, I use a single counterpoise that I've marked with different color electrical tape for the different bands and that seems to help me bring it quickly into resonance. I'm still working to get it more consistent though.

    2:25 "rf doesn't go past the coil" Please educate me: isn't the coil an inductor? When you coil up insulated wire at the end, doesn't it act the same as if you coiled up wire anywhere else, like a loading coil??

    Michael, any chance you can go in depth on how you set up and tune your WRC? I'm never able to get mine below about 1.5:1 or 1.6:1

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  2 роки тому +1

      I've received a few requests on doing this. I'll try to get a video produced yet this fall. Although, in reality, 1.5:1 isn't bad. External factors, like location, can affect your results and if I can't get the SWR down below 1.5:1 after fiddling for a bit, I'll usually run with it.

    • @gregorysmith3097
      @gregorysmith3097 2 роки тому

      @@KB9VBRAntennas Agreed, I just run with anything under 2:1 if I mess with it and can't go lower. If you do the video, can you do it using that Stick 230?

    • @markihde4381
      @markihde4381 2 роки тому +1

      While it's true that you reach a point of diminishing returns when you add more radials, the fact is that adding more radials increases the antenna's efficiency and lowers the take-off angle. If you are only running 2-3 radials, you might try to add a few more and see if that helps lower your SWR. As long as you are below 2:1 SWR at your chosen frequency operation edges, you should be fine. 73, K7SFA

    Ground Radials, great subject, I have heard so many opinions that I'm somewhat confuesed over the whole thing. One person below this comment brought up (what appears to be a good question) dosen't coiling up radials act like a loading coil? I don't know much about radials and how they work and how long to make them. If you are able to provide us with more information on this subject that would be great. Thank you for all the great videos, I really like them.

    Can the WRC antenna be deployed like the Buddistick? In other words, could the WRC successfully use a single, elevated radial?

    • @KB9VBRAntennas
      @KB9VBRAntennas  2 роки тому +2

      You can certainly do an elevated radial, that's one deployment I never tried with the WRC. There is no reason why it shouldn't work as the WRC is functionally similar to the Buddistick. But I do know that with one radial on the ground, the coil is very hard to tune and I have by best luck using three radials.
