I made this and you are better off painting after assembling it. I received lots of compliments. You really need two people. One to keep it sturdy while the other glues and staples it
You can paint after you are done. I just feel like I waste too much spray paint that way . There is no Wright or wrong way . Whatever suits you best ❤️

What do use the Drill and saw for. Did you saw the Craft sticks?
There was no drill just a small saw to cut the sticks
How much weight can this hold?
Probably around 2 pounds

Can round dowel be used as well? Would it make a difference?
You can but I think square dowel rods have flat surface so it’s easier to work with. 😊
