Demonstration of Akai AP-M7 linear tracking turntable

In the 1980s there was a short-lived production of linear tracking turntables. Today, for a a hefty price ($800+), you can purchase a linear tracking tonearm for your existing turntable. Not in my budget. Got this guy for $10. Ones can be found on eBay for a decent amount ($50-$200).

Hi, bought mine in 1984 (with the complete tower set). Turntable still in use and still working fine...
Only issue: The lid does not remain in the "open" position...
Any idea if / how this can be fixed?

Sorry, no idea. I actually sold my Akai a few years after this post (replaced with a Sony linear).

This turntable was built by Technics. Very good turntable. Akai was just stamped on it.

Thanks for the demonstration. I have a question, is it possible to start the vinyl with the case opened? This in order to clean the LP with a static-off vinyl brush or so.

+Media Magneet Unfortunately, no! Yeah, I keep my Denon (underneath in the video) for this reason (also to play clear vinyl; didn't mention it in the vid, but this table won't play clear vinyl).

didyman79 Thanks for the advisement! I no longer have this turntable though. Upgraded to a Sony PS-LX500: A linear tracking turntable that does play clear vinyl. :-)

@Media. Not here but there are many tangs with free lids. Even with counterweight arms and 1/2 inch classic shells.
The best about them is not the lack of negligeable tracking error but optimised arm and full automation sans skalamerija.
It can also get very pornographic if the optical sensor looks down to the edge of the record. I have a stack of North Korean records. They are a little smaller so I could use this. Diplomatic present in the family. SRH consorted a little with them, not much.

I have questions: what cartridge exactly did you buy and how did you change it? And also, what program do you use on mac to record songs?

Cartridge: AT311EP (www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT311EP-Universal-Turntable-Cartridge/dp/B0002ZUN1O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423423610&sr=8-1&keywords=at311ep). It's a P-Mount, so you just unplug the old one and plug the new one in.
I use Audacity to record on my Mac (freeware) (audacity.com).
