  • The capital of Skiathos is built amphitheatrically on the south eastern tip of the island in a windless bay, full of simple white houses with tiled roofs and narrow streets. It is the same town since the classical period until the Byzantine one when the population moved to the fortified village of Kastro seeking security. In the early 19th century, they abandoned Kastro and moved back to Skiathos Town in 1829; since then the population has grown and the town expanded.
Nowadays, almost the entire population of Skiathos is concentrated there.
Most of the entertainment is located in the main street Papadiamanti and on the seafront. Everything is quite expensive and as the area is very touristy. It is difficult to find many local products as he inhabitant of the island have neglected farming and agriculture for touristy activities.
We spent sometimes walking around the Chora, with the typical pebbles street and plenty of restaurants and bars. Then we reached teardrop-shaped peninsula of Bourtzi., covered by pine trees and surrounded by green-blue water that give the whole setting a watercolour painting beauty. The peninsula was fortified by the Gyzi family in the 13th century and archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a Venetian fortress. In the middle is a schoolhouse that now serves as a cultural center, housing the Museum of Nautical and Cultural Tradition of Skiathos.
Completing our walking tour, we climbed up to the Church of Agios Nikolaos. This cute little chapel was built in 1931 and has a well-preserved wood-carved iconostasis and bell/clock tower. But the real draw is the panoramic view over Skiathos’ houses and the waterfront - gorgeous at any time of day but especially at sunset.
You can anchor in the Bay in front of Megali Ammos, out of the swimming area This is the beach close to Skiathos’s town. It has several taverns, cafes and many sunbeds. It is relatively narrow, and combines sand with small pebbles. If you drop the anchor in the east corner, close to buoys for the local boat you can easily reach the town by dinghy or with a 15′ walk.
The second opinion is to moore at the pontoon in the commercial port, you may find some free place in the morning.
