Be warned, ionizing air conditioners have been shown in peer-reviewed studies to produce VOCs, cause negative heart rate fluctuation, and produce ozone, all of which have a negative effect on the body. For these reasons, please limit or eliminate your time in rooms with ionizing air purifiers (e.g. BlueAir) and others. I can provide these studies if you want to reach out.

The sensors on the two air purifiers are completely different.
The sensor on the Winix is a basic VOC sensor. It basically detects odors (contaminates). It doesn't detect dust. Use alcohol hand sanitizer. It will detect it in seconds. The Coway will not.
The sensor on the Coway is a basic particle sensor. It can detect dust but doesn't detect VOC's. Take a dusty towel and flip it around the filter. The Coway will detect the dust. The Winix will not.
You really shouldn't be using the AUTO functions on most air purifiers. Just set the air purifier on level 2 or 3 and leave it there 24/7. Set it to a level (noise) that you can tolerate and leave it.
Level 4 is good for bringing the particle levels down but in general it's just too loud to use in most cases. Auto (Sleep mode) is almost useless. It's so low that is barely moves any air. At night just turn it down to level 1 if you need it quiet.
Ideally these air purifiers would be made like the Coway Mega 300/400 where there are two filters. One on each side of the blower. This way the air purifiers moves almost twice as much air for the same power and noise levels. The problem being price. You can almost buy 3 - Coway/Winix purifiers for the same price as a single Coway Mega

Unfortunately I purchased 5500-2 before seeing reviews on Amazon. The 69dB noise is just below the requirement in the USA that the noise should be less than 70dB. It is ideal to turn to the level 4 for coway if the users are not at home.

In short - Winix is best for odors. The sensor even detects odor. But Coway is best for dust and allergens, as the sensor detects dust particles, not odors. I bought a Coway, but they're obviously very close!

I have seen other tests done, and unfortunately, the Coway AP-1512HH only captured 85% of the .3-micron airborne particulates, whereas the Winix 5500-2 was truly capturing 99.7% of .3-micron airborne particulates. Take this with a grain of salt, but I want my unit to filter out the air, and if this means lower CFM at the outlet, then so be it. I also believe these two units are about equally matched, but the Winix will clean the air better, whereas the Coway will clean faster, just not as well. Pick your poison, but the nod for me is clearly the Winix 5500-2 for the superior cleaning.

    • @russ1747
      @russ1747 7 місяців тому +2

Could you link to this test? The Coway maintain that their filters are true HEPA, which captures at least 99.97% of 0.3 micron particles.

I have winix similar model but what I liked about it the most was how pleasant the white noise is compared to every single air purifier (ok not that many, only about 5) I have used. For example, the reason I returned Blue Air mid size model is because how much chirping it had on all of the settings; I had to return it and get a new one because I thought it was a lemon, but no, it was exactly the same for the replacement unit. Those are deal breakers.
So maybe it could help us if you could put a mic near the units and compare how they might sound in terms of white noise, for people like me. After all, a lot of people put it in their master bedrooms and run it while they go to sleep.

I have the Winix. It's absolutely fantastic to have. I placed it in the area where two litter boxes reside.
You wouldn't know there were cats here. Zero odor --it does need to get cleaned on the first filter weekly because the suction captures fluff of cat hair (despite having a Roomba that runs every noon) --no that it's a bad thing, it's a quick clean right under the outer panel. I think for my situation, I have the best one.
The coway is a glossy device, would not do well with the cat hair likely to be hanging out on the device itself. - just my opinion

Side note, now that I've finished the video, I heard that the carbon pellets aren't supposed to completely fill the honey combs, but I've noticed that the replacement filters for my air purifiers that use it have significantly less than the ones that came with their units. Don't think it's right to pay full price for less carbon.

I tried the Winix and the controls turned off randomly, but it kept running, and I couldn't even turn it off manually or with the remote. Had to unplug it. Also sounded super loud. I've been interested in trying the Coway but was hoping for a better carbon filter as the mesh isn't going to do as heavy a duty job. There is a more expensive model that carries a similar honeycomb pocket carbon filter that I might try out if it goes on sale...

Something to consider is the winix carbon filter will continue filtering out voc long after the carbon treated pre-filter of the coway has been exhausted due to winix having actual carbon granules. So the voc test wouldn't even be close if not fresh out of the box.

I can say I have owned (own) 3qty of the 5500-2's for several years. 1 of those unit runs 12 hours a day and another 24 hours a day. The last one runs off and on when working in my lab. Countless hours and they still perform as good as day 1. One other note, your CFM values are WAY off. In the quick image of the 5500, it showed the test being taken from the very front of the partially restrictive front grill. This unit also draws air in from the sides of the front cover. Most testers see 230+ on the highest speed, some up to 250. This thing flows some serious air.

Good review, but I was missing one important aspect; noise (“per cubic feet”)
By that I mean how loud are they in general, and what is their best flow rate before they start to get really loud? Since some I’ve had seem to get almost exponentially louder at one point, without increasing their flow rate that much.

Trying to understand the difference between plasmawave and negative ION generator on the coway. If winix is really a hydroxyl generator, that would seem to be a big W.
Also good to know the winix doesn't have a dust sensor.
I wish the coway had a bigger carbon filter.
I prefer eco mode on the coway compared to the sleep mode on the winix because I like the way it still turns up the fan speed as needed, but turns off the fan when it can.

    • @Byhrum
      @Byhrum Рік тому +2

The ion generator from the coway wants to charge particles in the air and make them get stuck to the closest surface.
The plasmawave from winix tries to reduce VOCs by using sharks bipolar technology but there are no solid evidence of it doing much.
The good thing is that neither units produce ozone at all

I'm a little confused on your filter tests. You only mention the speed such as particles reduced per minute. How does that give any indication of filtering quality/capability? Sure, a product may filter at a faster "particles reduced per minute" rate but that doesn't mean much if it can't filter as many types (or sizes) of particles as another product. I don't see this mentioned in your tests. Your tests seem to just judge on speed rather than actual filter quality / performance.
For eg. So, aside from taking a few minutes longer to return to baseline, the Coway's style of carbon filter filters just as good as the Winix? Ie. They both filter identically in terms quality, particle size, types of smells/particles?
I'm not quite understanding how you're determining filter quality and capabilities purely on speed. How do I know one of the filters isn't leaving behind smaller sized particles and different types of particles?
I also noticed inconsistencies with your dollar signs in relation to costs. The Coway had around 1 or 2 dollar signs in another video indicating it's low price. In this video, you said both product's filter replacement costs are fairly low yet the video shows 4 and 5 dollar signs for the Coway and Winix respectively indicating extremely high dollar amounts.

Winix uses odour sense. Not Pm

How you're testing the airflow is flawed as these blowers are hvlp type systems. CFM should be measured unrestricted (not through a 3" hole) and through the system as it's designed with all filters in place...i.e. extend a box from the filter and average the speed across that larger area

Is it just me or is the COWAY quieter than the WINIX on its lowest setting?

The 5500-2 is practically the same as the Winix C545, which is available for $70 (refurbished) on their site.

Your comment and your graphic are out of sync at 2 minutes and 16 seconds. You're giving a higher score to the Conway but you say that the Winix won that round (filtration)

Your cfm test seems flawed. You have all the air coming in through that small opening, way smaller than even the exit opening on the purifier.

These do 350sq ft. Who lives in 350 sq ft house? Oh, you're good with bad air in all rooms but one? HUH??? Who buys 7 of these? For that reason I bought one unit for very large space, and it was only $230 more than one of these room units.
