Arrogance and Pride feel like the same thing but Vanity feels a bit different from them as it's more of a desperation for praise rather than being overly confident
They all play a part in each other but they’re fairly different when you think about it. Pride can be in yourself due to vanity/arrogance, but pride can also be in something else like your home country (national pride). Vanity is less about WHY you are the way you are and more about the way you’re ACTING because of pride/arrogance in your looks. Arrogance is generally just overconfidence in yourself, while also believing you’re superior over others which can be due to pride/vanity, but not always. Basically it’s good to have a little of any of these in some way, but if you’re not careful an abundance of any these three can lead to another of these sins, which is why they seem so similar. However they’re inherently different in ways where you have to be mindful of all 3 separately.
Pride seems to blind you to your own weaknesses and shortcomings so that it stifles your growth and self Improvement. Arrogance seems to cross over into territory that involves belittling and demeaning others in order to inflate your own sense of self worth. And vanity seems like when you become so inwardly focused and obsessed with your "image" that you are utterly dependent on outside sources for validation or value; so instead of sharing love with others, you are addicted to receiving it. It's like you suggested, they are all based from the same vice ... but manifest in their own unique "flavor". Thanks so much for the comment - real food for thought!
Hot take: The deadly sins are made to keep us in check, not just to avoid these acts. Wrath represents spite and rebellion most of the time, rather than just plain anger. It's made to fight for something whether right or wrong, selfish or selfless. Lust isn't just sexual attraction and temptation, but rather the representation of desire and ecstasy. The reason why sexual desire is the usual commonplace is because it's falling to our own instincts that we blindside our own minds in the process, trading temporary pleasure for a bigger picture. Sloth represents inactivity or stagnation of the self. It's not just plain laziness, mind you, but the idea is there; usually forms under stubbornness to not do something and staying there, never moved by anyone. Gluttony goes more into unhealthy obsessions of something; usually it involves food because it's the easiest to understand. It could be things such as knowledge, addiction; always hungry, but never full. Pride is a very interesting and niche aspect. I for one see it as "committing to a bit" where the bit is something relating to their own selfish cause, usually by their whims. It's more than just simply overestimation of one's self. Envy represents the reactionary force of an outside factor. What I mean by this is that you don't intend to move like some sort of unmanned puppet, relying on other's forces for you, like their achievements, their actions, their beliefs or something that made *you* move. For Greed however, it's as straightforward as it gets. It's your sense of acquiring something that is temporary and shallow like cash, and never tried to utilize it, rotting there with no perfect sense as to why. It might get confusing with other sins such as Lust (both are temporary desires), Gluttony (both are tied to overindulgence), Wrath (both are fighting for something), Pride (both are showing off), Envy (both are reactions towards others), and Sloth (both are unmoving), and you'd be right, because that's already a main vice of the world. It's a commonplace at this point that you could argue is the highest of the sins since it's general and not specific.
@@Ducklovingho-onpause half of it. It really depends on the type of lust, consensus or non-consensus; it doesn't matter. What matters is temporary desire/happiness for yourself.
