Wish you better health in the new year
Malaysian Chinese practice almost similar with what mainland Chinese do
Wrong. There are many provinces in China and many dialects. So Malaysian practices mainly the ones from the Hokkien province.
Take care Lee happy spring festival !
Lee, we do give gifts during Chinese new year, but in the form of food, including candies, biscuits, dried seafood, dried noodles, ……large varieties
@@tommydevil81 Ang or red ; bao or packet could have another connotation of the very sensitive kind. In ancient times, ang bao is given to signify something good. But we are not living in ancient times anymore.
Chinese do give gifts as family to another family. The gifts tend to be foods that can be stored relatively long, like dried goods etc.. The red envelopes are gifted by the grown-ups to kids specifically, at least that’s the majority of case. Employees can also receive red envelopes from the employers or group leaders. But giving red envelopes to people more senior than you is rarer…
It's not that rare to give red envelopes to seniors actually. Young people may give some red envelopes to their parents or grandparents when they start to work.

Happy new year to you guys. 🥳
I'm from Wuhan, China. On New Year's Eve, we call it “Chu xi”, We'll eat a really big dinner with the whole family. For example, fish, beef, crab, galbi soup, shrimp, dumplings, spring rolls……
As the world is following the modern day Gregorian calendar, the celebration seems more relevant when the Spring season is celebrated in four seasons' countries like China, Japan and Korea. Including Vietnam.
Lee, I’m so happy to see you looking so healthy. Great shirt too !!!
May you and Oli be blessed with much Love and with continued PERFECT health for the New Year and always❤️❤️❤️
Peace on Earth for everyone from cold & snowy nyc. ❄️❄️☮️❤️🙏🌻☮️❤️❤️

Chinese New Year is always a great time of the year, especially when everybody leave to their hometown and the streets are so quiet. The most peaceful staycation!
Yes ! And now it’s even snowing in Beijing ! The streets will be quiet and white !
Spring Festival couplets (春联) are definitely important. Also another different form of family parties is 走亲戚(travel around relatives): You visit your Auntie 1 in Day 1, Auntie 2 is Day 2, Uncle 1 in Day 3, Uncle 2 in Day 4, etc.
I love the Lego set, the diversity that LEGO had innovative every year!!
@@BarrettYT Lee, also, I hope you’re speedy recovery!! I was so worried about you, and I couldn’t watch your video until now!! So please take good care of yourself!! And, I can’t wait to return to China!!

Happy Chinese New Year
So glad to see you looking well! Wishing you and your family a wonderful new year with health, joy and prosperity!
You look fantastic and healthy, good luck and another good year for you and Oli👍👍👍
Cleaning of house is also a custom we also do in India during Diwali festival. Also the gifts buying and massive fireworks as well. Lots of customs and traditions are very similar.Yes we also have that concept of goddess of wealth worshipped during the festival. So there are lots of similarities in both the festivals.
More similarities than differences. Specially on wishes and aspirations.
The Chinese and Indians have many similar customs and traditions. They should get together and work on their similarities to further their friendship and cooperation
Even in China, different local has their own traditions. In my hometown, New Year’s Day we do not cook new food. New married couple must go to wife’s parent’s home. We have dragon dance and southern China may have lion dance
Good health to you too Lee. Happy New year.
Happy New Year to the Barretts! Apparently Christmas Island celebrates Chinese New Year….Dumplings are on the menu in Beijing!
@@BarrettYT thanks Gooners for life! Long healthy life and prosperity for this year and all of those to come…
long live China i am stuck in UK. Was stuck two years in Vietnam. Wife family in China. Horrific. West is corrupt and criminal. A fraudulent system.
@@colinscarborough2550 Same everywhere when money is involved. It is how you manage money to make it workable. Make your money work. This also leads to stereotyping.

Happy Lunar New Year 🧧!
Custom #? : all member of the family gathering and eat so much foods 1 - or more dishes (if you are rich) and every dish there is a meaning on it and they eat before new year or new year night.
Wow you read my mind! I was just working on 10 cultural traditions for CNY. This one was a great comparison though!
In northern China, people eat 饺子Jiaozi/dumplings for Chinese New Year, while in the south, people eat tangyuan汤圆
In northern China, people eat 饺子Jiaozi/dumplings for Chinese New Year, while in the south, people eat niangao年糕
I am from Beijing area and there are several different traditions from SZ area. I would just recommend you and Oli try it next year and experience the differences. For sure it will be much colder than SZ though. I do miss the SZ weather and lovely friends there. Anyway happy new year to you both!
Glad you are feeling better ! Love your vlogs and good health to you..新年好
One important aspect is the Reunion dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year where all family members shall gather for a feast after possibly being away from home the whole year.
In Malaysia, we have a Yee Sang (aka Low Sang or Lo Hei) tradition, of raw fish, carrot, cucumber, peanuts, crackers, sesame oil, plum sauce etc in a big saucer where everyone will toss up with their jossticks before serving. The tossing signifies good fortune for the year ahead. Many things in Chinese traditions are invariably for good fortune like red color implies attraction of abundance.
Yes, the family reunion dinner is the central part of the Lunar New Year customs.
Guess you actually mean ‘toss up with Chopsticks..’ not josssticks!
Wish you and all a ‘ Healthy, happy, wealthy, prosperous and fulfilling New Year’
CNY red package is for exhanging of good luck ,good health and new year wishes. The red package to the elderly folks means good health and good luck , the young ones who receive red package means work harder and work smarter. Among friends and relatives exchanging red packages mean good luck and good health .
Happy New Year and Best wishes! Hope you regain your health and strength in the new year. Appreciate what you have done !
I am glad you looked well and with vigour
Have a healthy and prosperous Chinese new year

There is a Chinese proverb: a year's plan is in spring, and a day's plan is in the morning! (一年之计在于春,一日之计在于晨!)This means that the annual harvest starts from sowing in spring, and the daily study starts from hard work and reading in the morning. It is used to encourage people to make unremitting efforts from the beginning! Therefore, the last few days of each year will be engaged in the sanitation of the whole house to make the house look the cleanest and welcome the New Year!
In a sense, China's Lunar New Year should be called the Spring Festival, which is the first day of spring! Ancient China attached great importance to agriculture, and the beginning of spring meant that the most suitable time for farming was coming every year, so ancient China set this day as the Chinese New Year
One of the traditions is called Bai Nian: visit your neighbors, friends, relatives and say happy new year to them. But now people seldom do that. This morning I have sent more than 10 happy year of the tiger messages via Wechat to my family and friends. We do give gifts to family members and friends. For example, my sisters always buy clothes or food or some Chinese new year decorations (a large pot of beautiful plants) for my aunts.
Thank you very much to talk about the Chinese new year! I miss it very much, have been in Canada, in the new year,we fell very bored all the times.
I really like this kind of content, learning about habits and customs of other cultures, very interesting. And it's also good to see you getting healthier.
You are in Shenzhen right now, do you have any plans to visit Mr. Dumbrill? Maybe some New Year party? ;) I know medical treatment can get very boring sometimes.
I like that you call it Chinese New Year. That is the way that it was always called in english before. but lately, some media and people try to call it Lunar New Year, they removed Chinese from it by saying not only China celebrate it, some other Asian countries also celebrate it. They celebrate it because Chinese culture influence, Chinese New Year is originated in ancient china, then spread to other Asian countries. It is not big deal to called it Lunar New Year only, we dont emphasize that it is a Chinese thing in Mandarin, we just call it Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, or just simply Guo Nian. but with current anti-China and Chinese hate sentiment, some people just want to make everything good from China non-Chinese, and anything that not good and related to China a Chinese thing. They make everything political, people even try to correct Chinese people from calling it Chinese New Year, that is so sad. I didnt care if they call it Chinese New Year before, but I always call it Chinese New Year now!
That lego set actually exists or you made that up? If you made it up, they should sell it and give you royalties.
Happy Chinese New Year! Best wishes Oli and Lee🎊🎉💐❤️
Thank you very much for all your efforts through the year. Wish you good health and a very Happy New Year !

This is a great, I see all these vivid new year atomasphere from your video! I'm an overseas chinese and miss all of these activities, miss families and friends especially at this special holiday. Thank you! Wish you all the best in the year of the tiger as well. 🎉
You do take care too. 新年快了。
You may not realise this. In China festivities are usually based on historical events and non religious. Whereas festivities in the west are usually religion based.
I am a Chinese in Hong Kong. My daughter has been staying in Vancouver since she was six and she has two daughters now. I will share this video to my daughter in Vancouver, Canada. The idea is to refresh her memory of the Chinese New Year tradition and custom. Her memory of the Chinese New Year tradition and custom should have been eroded with time. Thanks for your video.
You didn't mention of reunion dinner on new year eve, that is the most important part of CNY celebration.
Especially if you are far away. In this covid 19 era, it is sad to see people separated and can only do reunion dinner via the internet.
Thank you for sharing the tradition of Chinese New Year!
Wishing you a very happy New Year and the best of health!

Hi Lee, good to listen to your view on Chinese New Year.
As far as I understand that we, the Cantonese or most Southern Chinese when visiting friends and families at New Year period, invariably the adults would bring tangerines(symbolised by it's golden colour and auspicious name of the fruit) as gifts! while handing out red-envelope contains money to the children!
Happy New Year or as they say in China Spring Festival. 恭喜新年快乐。
Should stay in different provinces in China to take note of the subtle traditions.
Lee, Wishing you and your family good health, good luck and prosperity in the year of Tiger!

Happy New Year of the Tiger to you, Oli and your whole family. Wish the tiger brings you vigor and energy to keep you healthy. One more important event: the New Year Eve family reunion dinner, bringing all the family members to the table to feast on traditional New Year dishes often named to rhyme with good fortune. For the first 7 days of the New Year, each day is attributed with certain meaning, with do's and don'ts. During the Spring Festival holiday period many stores will be closed. Families will pay visits to their relatives and friends bringing gifts, even though they might not see each other much during the year. It's very important to visit older relatives to pay respect.
Hi Barrett, as a consequence of Covid-19 and also maybe anti-China stance taken by the current British government the traditional annual Chinese New Year celebration with dragon dance, lion dance and other performances at Trafalgar Square and in China Town, London did not take place and will not take place. In the past, this was a much anticipated event that people, irrespective of race and nationalities living in London, enjoyed and appreciated it.
If you observe closely, the so called SOP against covid 19 is contradictory. Life has to go on. Humans cannot be bog down forever by this covid 19 disease. You have to draw a line somewhere and say that's it. If you read up history, there was nothing done when there was a pandemic that time. But humans still survive on. How come humans cannot live on like before ?
In the UK at Christmas we eat some foods that we seldom eat at other times of the year, these include Turkey, Christmas Pudding & Mince Pies. Different areas of China have vastly different foods, where in China are you from and what foods do you eat at new year?
