  • Part 2 of Making a Mandalorian! Today, I put together the Flak Vest for the costume. This project was much easier than I expected once I got started. Overall, it was a fun project that I would probably be able to do again in the future without much trouble. - Rob
    Materials:
    2 yards of Duck Canvas
2 feet of 1 inch Industrial Strength Velcro
I put as much detail as I believed appropriate into this video. If you would prefer to watch only the highlights of the DIY portions, check out the timecodes below.
    1:54 - 3:42 making the pattern
3:59 - 4:15 beginning to sew the halves together
4:52 - 5:30 sewing the two layers together
6:40 - 7:05 cutting the excess vest length
7:53 - 8:10 information about cutting excess side flaps
    9:20 - 9:34 re-sewing the edges
    11:20 - 11:37 test fit for velcro
    12:25 - 13:03 placing the velcro
    13:15 - 13:45 sewing the velcro
    13:57 - 14:36 final test fit

Awesome! I have a lot of sewing experience, so I figured I'd basically wing it off the pictures I'm looking at, but having a video showing the sewing process is very helpful (I also get the benefit of basically making a wearable mockup. Since I'm fairly busty and I'd like to be able to do a dead sprint in my armour, I'm making a sort of secondary undervest that has the short sleeves, and under the actual flak vest it's pretty structured and laces shut on the sides, to make sure everything sits nice and snug. Since it's a very similar shape to the flak vest, I get to try sewing the ugly version first). If anyone other than me gets annoyed with velcro (I don't like how it loses its hold over time), I recommend sewing in a row or two of heavy duty hooks and eyes or hooks and bars instead (the big, chunky hooks and bars you see in some pants and skirts should work just fine). They'll still be invisible on the outside of the vest unlike lacing, and they won't lose their hold over time or potentially pop loose or get stuck like snaps or zippers might.

Me, someone who sews: oh no he's not hemming,,, he's gonna have so much trouble hemming omg look at all those raw edges,,, ahhhh i hope he's not gonna leave it unhemmed
You: I had some trouble hemming because i did it after i sewed everything
    Me: Knew it!
In all seriousness, as someone who only just started getting into the idea of mando cosplay this was super helpful!!
I realise you made this a year ago but if you wanted to make one again I'd reccomend hemming from the start - especially since you did a 2 layered vest (y'know,, the whole right sides facing each other deal) - but im sure you figured that out lol
    Thanks for the video!!

Just because I don't want to wing it, do you happen to have an actual pattern for the pieces you cut out? Happy to wing it if necessary though!
