A Grain of Sand in Polarized Light

  • This is an ordinary grain of silica sand that measures less than a millimeter across. The colors result from birefringence in the quartz crystal as the sample is illuminated with partially polarized light. It was imaged with a Mitutoyo M Plan APO 10X microscope objective, and the video uses a focus-stacking technique to achieve a large depth of focus.
