Since we know Stark's very sad backstory. Stark is german word Strong. I forgot and got distracted.. When we learn that that the Lord's younger son name was Mut. As an English speaker I thought Mut as in an insulting word like Mute or Mutt. I didnt realize Mut in German meant Courage. Wow...this episode. I felt that.
All the names in Stark's Family have such heroic concepts as names, like his brother Stolz meaning "proud" and Orden meaning "Medal" (but like more the kind that are given to Soldiers for their service). Btw, if you want any name translated I can help you out, I am a german native^^
I love how they managed to show two completely separate themes in a single episode, the curse + the action and the dance + fatherly relationships. Also small little details like Fern looking at her hand when Stark, out of the blue, holds her hand. I think this dance scene was beautifully done by Madhouse I have no words in other anime you only see their shoulder level when they dance but Madhouse said "Let's Cook" and it was all hand drawn and supervised by a dance school using a real waltz.

Her reading of the situations is always a step ahead of everyone. Also although fern is faster, frieren isn't slow with her casting at all, fern is just a genious in that regard.
I am not a expert, but It is not like Frieren is slow at preparing magic, it is just that Fern is faster. There are spells that can take more time to conjure, and some that take less. In special zoltraak that needs some time. In this episode Frieren woke up, stood up, and walked, in this time I think it is enough to conjure.
Frieren is fast, but Fern is just on another level. In a magic fight, casting speed is the most important. No matter how strong your spell is, if it's 1 second slower to cast than your opponent's, then that's gameover.
Visually, the Zoltraak that Frieren in this episode is pretty thin, unlike her other casts being thick. so the thickness can vary with casting time. A thin Zoltraak doesn't need a preparation at all, it seems.

Whatever the situation is, just trust Frieren's words. When she said she can do it, she can. But also that applies when she said she can't do it, she can't (like detect curses, etc). Just like before, she said Stark & Fern can defeat the two demons, they can. When Frieren said she's stronger than Aura, she is. She won't lie for something like these. "And you alright...can you hear me?"
The smile Frieren gave at the end, seeing Fern and Stark at the window with Sein, that made the episode for me. You can see now how much she's paying attention to her companions, and how much she realizes how she feels for them, even though it's been such a short time for her.

You're seriously underestimating Frieren. She's the mage of the party who helped defeat the Demon King, the strongest mage shown to date, and the one who contributed the most to humanity's current understanding of magic. Frieren didn't know what type of monster caused the curse, but she's experienced enough to be able to make the correct snap decision once awakened. I doubt Fern would have the knowledge and experience necessary to do it, even if she is a bit faster than Frieren when casting spells (and Frieren isn't slow, either).

Fern may only know a single offensive spell, which is Frieren's Demon slaying version of basic offensive magic, but Frieren drilled her into absolutely mastering it. When Frieren fights the weight of her vast knowledge and past battle training works against her in that she can't help but take a fraction of a second to decide on which one of the hundreds of offensive spells in her repertoire will work best for the situation whereas Fern only has a single spell to choose from and thus she will instinctually use it without any pause for thought. This makes her fractionally faster than even Frieren and other master mages. This is why Frieren trained her the way she did. Fern is undetectable and incredibly fast. She is basically trained like a mage assassin or rather a demon assassin.

You know, the fact that Fern casts spells faster than Frieren does not mean Frieren "takes forever to cast". It is not a binary thing where you are one or the other. Nothing, in this show, is. Even being an "elf" does not mean you have nothing in common with "humans".
I feel its good that Himmel didn't propose. In episode 1 Freiren was like i dont even know who Himmel is. Now imagine how she would react to him, probably treat him like a child and ignore him, not understanding he was being genuine.
