The amount of times ive tried to put more metal over a opal.....another ver useful vid! About to go prep my oval cab setting for a very pretty customers opal 🙏🤟
I'm glad to see you doing that, I know how some people are about glue. I use e6000, because you don't have to mix it and it sets a bit rubbery, which I would think helps absorb any shock to the opal.
I had a fuckup in the studio yesterday setting an Opal doublet. I used superglue instead of 2 part epoxy and the Opal wasn’t level yet in the setting but the glue hardened before I could fix it. I tried heating it from under to soften glue but no luck. I ended up cracking it a bit , which wouldn’t be a problem if it was level, I could have added a tiny layer of clear resin to fill crack. Any tips on loosening glue without damaging Opal.?

I will have to try that! 😃Glue is just a tool like any other. I think it gets a bad rap. 😃
Oh man I used the 2part epoxy for the first time this weekend and boy howdy it stinks! Going to wear my respirator next time 😷
Not a bad idea, it IS stinky! :)
Great tip. I love the setting tool that you were using. It’s my favorite, out of the set.

Hmm, you need a solvent safe for sensitive stones. I am not sure I know of what can be safely used with opals. :(
What is that wire you put underneath the stone?
We sometimes use fine silver wire to raise the stone to the correct height. :)
