- It's official! Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is in production and there's not a Johnny Depp in sight. Join me as we discuss the upcoming sequel to a franchise that should have ended ten years ago but didn't.
Additionally, Pirates 6 will likely see the introduction of a strong female of color to replace Depp as Anne Bonny, one of the only recorded female pirates in existence who was a read headed Irish woman.

The Rumor is, Disney eventually did approached Depp about the upcoming movie. However he turned down the movie for 2 reasons and they are: 1) the way Disney treated him over the Amber Heard accusations. 2) the script was hot garbage (I believe it was going to be a bait and switch).
Yeah of course they where just trying to use him and his name, dissapointing but not at all surprising, good Johnny Depp doesn't sell himself for that humiliation. Shows how evil Disney are, like they haven't humiliated him enough and they really seem to think there are lots of money in this bait and switch tactic, how many times have they already tried it, ugh.

No one asked for a Pirates of the Caribbean without Depp? True enough. But Disney is no longer in the business of making movies that appeal to audiences. In fact, corporate Disney has fired everyone it once employed capable of making movies with good stories and decent special effects. Amazingly, we recently saw the spectacle of a Disney executive blaming the audience for not liking Disney movies. Apparently, Disney no longer understands economics. That is, the company does not understand that a business makes money by giving consumers what they want. So, when Disney films fail at the box office, the company equates the failure to moral deficiencies in the audience. The self-righteous arrogance of such a claim would be funny were it not so sinister. A soulless corporation suggesting that it is a repository of moral insight is not a serious argument; it is more like an unreflective burlesque.
It's been so long since the first movie I was in middle school. I miss being that old. I wish I was now.

I'm getting so sick of the concept of replacing REAL historical European figures with modern POC actors, and the people who keep thinking this is a good idea.
The first one was the best, the other two where great as well, the fourth wasn't to bad but the last one is my least favorite because it broke canon from the ones that came before with Jack getting his Compass and when Captain Barbossa getting killed off. But Pirates without Johnny Depp I will not watch
why not just make a completely original movie set in the same universe?
A Pirates remade for a modern audience will be a massive HIT... for content creators and people like me who like to see Disney lose money.

The pirates franchise feels like something that could only exist in the early 2000's era where it belongs. Rebooting for today just feels like a weird fit.

The biggest misstep an up and coming actress can make these days is be foolish enough to place themselves in a position where they'll be compared to a performance that has become iconic.
It barely works with foreign adaptations into English speaking ones, and the sources in this case are foreign. People sense the dissonance if the film isn't up to the level of The Departed. None of these remakes are done like The Mummy (1999) or Mission Impossible. It's done with zero care and pure vindictiveness in trying to one up its predecessor. So you end with a steaming pile of crap that also tops itself with DEI nonsense for extra flavor.
Walt is rolling his eyes in his pod. POTC is amazing, and while the 5 was ok, the post credit scene felt unnecessary, because the way it ended would have been a happy ending.
Disney has ruined their franchises, and they’ll never stop until they see the error of their ways, which will never happen. 🙄🤦♂️
I said this in response to another comment, but I think it couldn't be said enough. A new story with new characters may as well not be Pirates of the Caribbean. Even if set in the same universe, it can only ever be a spin-off with a new title. The name "Pirates of the Caribbean" invokes a certain image and expectation in people's minds: notably that of the adventures of Jack Sparrow. And I genuinely think more audiences would be interested in a sincere and well-made spin-off, than a badly-stitched continuation. And this goes for any franchise.
Furthermore, the ginger genocide in media is disgusting. Blackwashing is equally as racist as whitewashing, and *especially so* when dealing with actual historical figures.
You shouldn't have mentioned Frankenstein! Don't give them any ideas. A female Frankenstein not just a bride, but having her own agency. Put together by the greatest female doctor ever, she is built from dead feminists of color ( and a few trans) to punish men. Truely a brave and stunning monster!
If this film actually gets made expect the usual story of it going way over budget, having extensive re-shoots, a rolling delay on the release date and a very disappointing opening weekend at the box office. Also expect its failure to be blamed on the inevitable indifferent audience.
How about a Movie about Pintel and Ragetti? Or even a show. Those two were amazing comic relief and you could easily add on to their characters.
But instead Disney has to go and make another movie that most likely won't have Johnny Depp in it and will disrespect the franchise. I was already upset the original comic relief was replaced by two other dudes in the 4th and 5th. Just like Jack Sparrow it didn't feel the same without pintel and Ragetti. Or as someone else put it:put it to rest don't even mess with the franchise.
Fun fact regarding the opening statement about recycling: the concept has been around for much longer. Steel and glass have been recycled for centuries before plastics were even invented.
I will most certainly enjoy the fallout when they decide to release that turd... In the meantime, I'll watch the originals... 😅

There was a time where I was really looking forward to a sixth movie, I wanted to know what the teaser after the credits implied. But that was seven years ago, and now I couldn't care less.
The only way a female lead would work is if Jack Sparrow eventually had a daughter that has his clever wit and bold character…. Still, it won’t feel the same.

My personal ranking of the saga
PDC1: I think the best. It keeps things free from too fantastical things (the curse is in the background, it makes the pirates immortal, but it is only used in the climax and also has a nice resolution in the duel between Jack and Barbossa), I fully agree with the humor of the film and I would also like to say that here Jack is a fantastic character: cunning, very "naughty" and capable of making himself think he's crazy just to fool his opponents.
Barbossa villain who always makes me laugh out loud, but who maintains negative connotations.
PDC2: Davy Jones is a nice character, halfway between the villain and the co-protagonist and I find Beckett a good addition as the source of all the troubles that come from the protagonists, even if I always found it hard to believe that the Governor Swann could be overtaken so easily.
Return of Commodore Norrington (also a good supporting character), Elizabeth in her pirate clothes and attitude looks great, and...well, Jack begins his descending parable of comedy, but here he is still likeable.
PDC3: the only big negative point is that the royal rumble that seemed to be announced... doesn't happen. The English fleet is destroyed by Calypso's maelstrom, but the only real fight occurs only between the Dutch and the Pearl. What was the point of rallying the other pirates, gathering that immense fleet and then twiddling their thumbs and celebrating the victory? Ok, pirates have a reputation for profiteering raiders, but do you have crews from all over the world? Use them, thunder and lightning!
Okay, nice ending in which Will becomes the new helmsman of the sea and Jack and Barbossa return to their raids.
The action... although exaggerated, I give it up and there are nice gags (like the one involving the summoning of Calypso) that I still remember years later.
PDC4: I think the only memorable thing is Cruz in the role of Angelica, a sign that already at the time they wanted to test the waters to replace Jack with a female counterpart... strangely, I always missed the character of Anamaria, that maybe he could have given a little something to the saga, in terms of his relationship with Jack.
The romance between the missionary and the mermaid is very forgettable and Blackbeard is an attempt, unsuccessful in my opinion, to emulate Barbossa as a villain.
PDC5: the only things I save are the floating effect of Salazae's crew and his role as a living man, who brings what is, technically, the good of the situation, into the role of the antagonist.
For the rest...Barbossa's paternal side is out of place, moreover with someone he hasn't seen for 20 years (beautiful Kaya Scodelario, for goodness sake) especially considering how ours was painted in the first film; the character of the useless bald witch; the subplot of Will's curse... I'm not even going to comment, a pulling by the hair of characters who had already completed their task.

I've come to accept that right now, Hollywood is in a rut, but the good part is that I think we're at the end of it.
I think one of, if not *the* , reason for the lack of creativity driving this regurgitation of franchises is the hiring process in Hollywood studios, where those whom may bring new talent and ideas are sidelined in favour of… er…. other factors when hiring new blood.

Disney is apparently being run by idiots now. Why not just pick up where the last movie left off?! The end credits scene strongly suggested that the next movie would be about Will and Elizabeth, they don't necessarily NEED Johnny for THAT story!
A woke movie about Calypso and Jones COULD be good too, but Disney is going to do what modern-day Disney does best and completely ruin this idea as much as they possibly can..

I had forgotten how good the first movies actually where as everything seems to get trashed nowadays. And then they at least tried to stay somewhat historically accurate, I realise they are fantasy movies but still they are supposed to take place in our world so all the female pirates as example feels kind of ridiculous.
I completely agree, I'm glad Jonny won't be back for this. The last thing I'd want to see is a broken down old Jack sparrow humiliated and belittled by some bitchy girlboss.

Honestly, we all know where this is going to go.
It'll come out , the access media will gush about how "empowered!" and "diverse!" everyone is, with likely pre-emptive remarks trying to paint anyone who doesn't see it as istaphobic.
The film will be a mass of bad writing, bad cgi, bad acting, bad messaging and bad recycling, , it'll sink to the bottom of the ocean like a stone and not float like a ship, Disney will lose even more money, and the usual suspects will come out and blame the toxic male fans once again!

Ayo Edebiri is a phenomenal actress. She has a scene in the Bear where she is talking about the best omelette she has ever made and it is honestly one of the greatest performances I have seen in years…that being said I have no desire to she her attempt a Pirates movie. I’m not a huge Depp fan, but this is his franchise. Not Disney’s. Any attempt to make a PotC without Jack Sparrow will make less than the Marvels.

I think that if they come up with a new story and new characters (who are not just genderswapped or raceswapped versions of previous characters) then audiences should give it a chance. It's not like we're lousy with fun pirate movies. There should be room for a Pirates of the Caribbean without Jack Sparrow.
Of course, Disney usually can't help being derivative, and audiences will most likely pass on it even if it turns out to be good because they've been shit for so long

Well ... I didn't even particularly like the first three parts. Sure, all the films were colorful and spectacular, but I couldn't really take any of them serious. In my opinion, too much emphasis is placed on spectacle these days. The audience is hardly given a moment to catch their breath, something MUST always happen, and gradual character development is shit upon. "Fuck it, it's overrated." And what similar mantras are worshipped.
Nowadays, there's too much focus on fantasy movies, superhero stories, Star Wars clones and whatever else is popular these days. One of the main reasons for this might be that you can bend reality as you like. Women are superior to men in these worlds, even in terms of physical strength, which corresponds wonderfully to the "message", as the Critical Drinker calls it, and one does not have to deal with realities that interfere with shaping the world as they see fit.
But masterpieces or movies that touch you are not created in franchise films or films whose main purpose is political.
And stories about normal people facing unusual situations are not as easy to create as CGI orgies. They require common sense, a gift for observation, insight into suffering and the ability to develop a good story. Young people in particular don't find them very exciting. But I'll take a movie like "Leolo" or "Enough Said" or "Chinatown" or "Ex Machina" or "Scott Pilgrim vs the World" or "The Ninth Gate" over franchise silliness any day of my life.
Will never watch this now that Johnny isn’t in it. The story is too far fetched. It’s doomed. You can’t top Johnny so give it up already. He made the character who he is. No one should have the right to entertain the thought of making another pirate movie without Johnny. What is Disney thinking??
