I got the SS3 and SS4 double pack for the Saturn way back in the day and have the anthology on the Wii. I love the new art direction that began in part three. Kyoshiro, in particular, benefited greatly from the new style. I agree with many others that SS3 had a number of issues, being a big departure from the previous entry. SNK took what was good from part three and made it better for the fourth game, which is my favorite of the series. Great to see a Neo CD review of SS3. I hope there's more Neo stuff to come.
Shizumaru is a boy. He is the son of the boss of the game Zankuro. And it's Bust and Slash mode not burst. Bust is a demon mode Slash is hero mode Some trivia for ya Samurai Showdown 3 and 4 are the only versions of Samurai Showdown to have the correct numbering. Samrurai Showdown 5 (0) is the first, Samurai Showdown is the second, then it's 3, then 4, and the final in the chronological timeline is Samurai Showdown 2. However in Japan it's known as Shin Samurai Spirits. They denote the numbering until 3
I own the actual MVS cart of this game as well as the ports to the Sega Saturn. The music alone for this game on the SS version is what makes it my favorite to play, even if this game is SUPER broken.
Sam Sho 3 on PS1 was my first owned home version of the SS series for years, it did it's service for me even if it got panned by many. But then I picked up the Sam Sho on Genesis, and after that the awesome Sam Sho Anthology on PS2. Though it doesn't have SSV Special, it's a treat to have all of the games on the Anthology in my library of games.
And 2 years later, I now have the first one on SNES and Gameboy, and 3 and 4 on my Saturn. Slowly growing the SNK collection. I also had bought the PS1 version of 4, but the seller accidentally sent me the Japanese version of 3, so now I have it twice on PS1, US and Japanese versions, they differ slightly besides language. Japanese version supposedly has a little more slowdown, and the options menu font is a little different (as well as the Now Loading screen font).
Looks pretty good. But unfortunately, I suck at fighting games. The only fighting game I ever did good in was Dead or Alive 4. I completed and unlocked everything in that game. It was pretty awesome!
I remember having the Japanese set of SS 3 and 4 for the Saturn, and both played great on that machine. I currently have SS3 for the PlayStation (also Japanese), and I wish I could say the same for it....I need to find the Anthology for the PS2.
Nice Video !!! Some Freeware/Indie Devs. Build new Dreamcast Games. Awesome! The German Retro Game Magazine. That Dudes are so Cool! They Test or give a short look @ some Fantastic new DC Games! Still in Love with The CAST (SEGAAAAA)
Mark why aren't you using the A + B Combination to sneak behind the opponent? That's like my fave feature of this game and one of the reasons why this game is my favorite fighting game
TheChell The arranged soundtrack sound like crap compared to the original imoEspecially Rimururu's theme which they messed up with the arrangementI mean these arrangements are cool on their own but I prefer the original music during gameplay
Hey mark, you need more training on fighting games! With your reflexes (see Mark play a side scrollin shooter) you could became unstoppable on beat em up! Start with kof13, is a good school
SS2 was kind of the same, number three changed its art style to being alot darker overall and color wise, a more serious style of drawing too. It kept this through the other games but added cutesy characters here and there to cheer it up.
OK. I love SS, the first one, and never got to play 2 or 3. Darkness tone is fine with me! Just taking dark as color wise. It's like Guilty Gear had pretty dark barkrounds....but the characters..at least in my opinion were brighter and stuck out. IDK. i guess its like apples and oranges. Not that this is a horrible look. Just look darker. But the character animations due look fluid.
"Do fighting games need stories?"
Yes, Fighting games have some of the most intriguing stories out there.

Still such a pretty game.
That game looks incredible. Great review!
Shizumaru is a boy. He is the son of the boss of the game Zankuro.

Bust is a demon mode
Slash is hero mode

The developers have gone on record to say that Shizumaru isn't related to Zankuro.

Surreal. Had a neo geo cd in high school and played this daily. Thanks for the review.

I love ss v special. so much gore in it and it looks great.
Bought this one yesterday along with Amakusa's revenge for my switched Saturn
Most retro games with lower resolutions like 480p, 360p or 240p look way better on a CRT monitor...
Looks pretty good. But unfortunately, I suck at fighting games. The only fighting game I ever did good in was Dead or Alive 4. I completed and unlocked everything in that game. It was pretty awesome!
You can get all the Samurai shodown games together on one disc called samurai shodown anthology for ps2 if you don't have a neo geo CD

I played the arcade version but never gotten any of the series. Might have to go and get me one very soon.
You don't need a full size Neo-Geo to enjoy Samurai Shodown III. You'd need a miracle.
CGR reminds me of mystery science theater 3000 for some reason
This was the best Samurai Shodown.
Mark why aren't you using the A + B Combination to sneak behind the opponent? That's like my fave feature of this game and one of the reasons why this game is my favorite fighting game
It's basically Street Fighter, but with weapons.
Never played it, but the graphics look awesome. I have however played the shit out of the first one.
I have this for my Saturn. The only thing that is missing from this version is the scaling and Camera zooming.
soundtrack sounds great
Probably the best SS of the series
Hands down the best samurai showdown
He is a boy, Mark. "Maru" in Japanese names are only used in male names.
Damn yo, that shit is omniferous!
VICTOLY!!
The bad news is that I don't have a neo geo cd. The good news however is that I have a Ps2. So I'll be picking up Samurai Shodown Anthology.
Haohmaru Windy I used to have the PSP version a few years ago but I stupidly traded it in. *Facepalm*
Samurai Anthology = Arcade version + arranged sountrack = PERFECT!
TheChell The arranged soundtrack sound like crap compared to the original imoEspecially Rimururu's theme which they messed up with the arrangementI mean these arrangements are cool on their own but I prefer the original music during gameplay
Haohmaru Windy I like both of them
It's still not the original arcade soundtrack from what I've heard though...and that's a big loss for me
Great game, but nothing beats the 4th one. Also, check Last Blade 3!
All those years and now i know Shizumaru has a sword
Everything!?
i used to hate emulators. then I found an original xbox with Coinops6, will never go back. seriously, 4000 games mostly perfect
Hey mark, you need more training on fighting games!

Ss2 ss5 the best
The PSX port was panned terribly. If I recall Gamepro gave the PSX version 1.5/5
Thanks guy...How about psp ultimate ghost and goblins,it's real Good.
game looks sooooooo dark...i know 1 wasn't but not sure about SS2

"I'm not sure it's a boy or girl"
Typical anime character...lol. Traps are everywhere in anime.
mark has an forehead??? wow
Are you always drunk or you talk like that always??
Who else fast forwards 30 seconds on all these videos?
