I wish I saw this earlier lol. I just got the Anker PowerExpand 11-1 USB-C hub. I used to have 1 of those cheap ones that “clamp” onto the iPad but had many performance issues as I moved 100% of my work over to my M1 iPad Pro. The Anker hub is great, I have a lot more I/O now including the low ohms headphone jack for quick monitoring. The main thing I needed though was the USB-C data port for 10Gbps and higher PD for my 4in/4out audio interface which the Anker hub provides nicely. I first had power load issues but Anker told me their hub needs a minimum of 15w of PD to run so anything else connected will have to be compensated additionally, the Anker 521 40w plug and the Apple 100w cable fixed all my PD issues. (USB-C Extension cables are tricky though lol). Great video btw 👊🏾
Does your audio interface go via usb2 port on hub and being buspowered? Or is it selfpowered? I’m dabbling to get my TC Helicon Go Twin, usb1 audio class compliant interface to work with iPhone lightning. Going through Apple lightning to usb3 adapter works fine with usb3 sd card reader and interface by itself. But both together….. you think this hub will make it? Suppose it’s thunderbolt speed on your iPad Pro. Mine is Lightning.
I watched your first one about the Unihub and came back to see if there was an update since I didn't want to get an older model. Glad to hear about the Plus. I also now very fully understand what PD is and the entire charging dynamics. Cheers, fam. Thanks!
Jakob, great videos as usual. I have to ask: What do you do if you need more ports than the ones the hub offers, let's say you have a big studio running a lot of stuff through usb. Have you try to do this?
Go to 6:51 in this video and pause. Look at the top of the frame to the right of the Union hub. There’s a black Anker hub there. It is an extra non-powered hub I’m using to add more ports to my setup. . I want to stress that it’s only called non-powered because it does not have a power port for adding power to it. It’s a “bus powered hub”. It still needs power and it takes it from the USB port it’s connected to. So it connects to one hub and then breaks out into four USB ports. This adds three more ports to my setup. . It’s important that you do not connect another powered hub with PD functionality this way. It can end up damaging your equipment. Only use non-powered hubs when “adding more ports” to your setup. . What’s also important here is to make sure that the power supply is powerful enough to power everything. So if you want to add more things to your setup, synth, hard drive, midi controllers, sound interface, keyboard m, mouse etc. Then you need a big power supply. Get something rated for 80w or higher, preferably higher.
Thanks for explaining this. Nice and clear. May I ask. Have you tested the usb 2.0 port on this hub with midi class compliant audio interfaces? Or just through usb 3 ports? What port is on your iPad? Sorry for all q, but you seem so proficient in these matters. It’s hard to find deep tried info on these things. Keep up the god work 👍
@@JakobHaq, Alternatively, if I were not considering a USB-C PD-powered hub to dasiychain into this one - instead, an old school vanilla USB-A port expander that comes with the option to plug in a barrel connector wall adapter into such a hub to increase power enough to all those simultaneous USB-A devices - will that be a safe work around from the danger, otherwise, you mention in daisy chaining of USB-C PD'd hubs?

Hello! Nice videos! I would like to ask you (or any person around here) about audio interfaces for ipad (pro). I was looking for a portable audio interface and i would like it works without needing the hub (maybe just a simple adapter). I know it would require an interface with batteries. Another option would be the irig keys i/o, wich seems nice since it would substitude all my on-go staff (i use a nanokey station and/or m-audio mini 32) but i did read some bad compatibility with the lastest ios Anyone can help me a little?
It would be the best hub if it had AUDIO JACK 3.5mm in order to attach my headphones and not have to use separate audio interface device. Ex. I just want to play with a keyboard attached via usb and wear my audio technica …
Yes, technically you can connect any USB hub to Lightning ports, however there is no getting around the need for lightning adapters. Here’s the correct way of doing it: ua-cam.com/video/lqdnqovz-vI/v-deo.html

I’ve been lucky off the bat with another Kickstarter Campaign from Hyperdrive Gen2 USB hubs from 3 years ago. They have a much longer attached usb cables and in the beginning proposed that a detachable usb cable would cause more issues if the incorrect one was not used with their hubs at the time. I still use it today and it works with the UR81C speeds too and the dspMIXFX app works great with it. I’m testing the on board usb hub on my Audiofuse. There’s also the ESI M4u midi interface with onboard usb 3.0 hub too.

Hi Jacob, thanks for your great recommendation! Got two of this hubs, all working well - even got my HDMI connected from iPad to Samsung 4k TV :) ..just wish the hub had a few more USB-C connections…

They have a selection of cables (UNI). Even though you said a cable comes with this UNI Hub, did you get any of there other cables. Like they have some HDMI ones. They have others that could be potentially useful. I was also wondering about there other Hubs, like the 4 in 1 USB-C 3.0 Hub, if that would go well with this Hub in order to get more Usb connections. Or even there Adapters (SD).
Appears, from what I found in the comments, this was referenced along with a timestamp of a non-powered hub daisy-chained at ~6:51. The comment thread is with an "@oscarjmg" mentioning damage to equipment can occur if daisy chaining another PD powered hub into another. I'd be curious if the same goes for older hubs (non USB-C) that, previously, were used for expanding USB ports while providing separate power to devices *_if this does not damage the rest of the equipment in the daisychain._*
Fab video, I’m having a nightmare at the moment has I carnt seem to find anything powerful enough to power a 12.9 iPad and scarlet2i2 for recording my sax videos.
Great review. I would say you can get Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) with an additional USB-C port instead of the 3rd USB-A which has everything else this hub has, on sale for $45 often. Even without sale, it is MSRP $60 and still $20 cheaper than this device on sale for $80. I just don't get the pricing here.
I saw on their website that you could get a long cable separately for the old version, but it only allowed 60w to reach the laptop. Is the longer cable here the same, or did they tweak it to get the normal 85w you'd get with the short cable? My laptop has a 65w charger, so I probably won't get this if it still only allows 60w.
Interesting and informative. Looks good, but I want something that has independent power for each connection, ie: I'm getting an audio interface that has no power button, but it takes it's power directly from the usb-c connection to the device (ipad Pro in my case). I'd like to be able to power off the audio interface without switching off all other connections, ie: charging the ipad. What would you recommend? Thanks! PS: All my external devices are usb-c, and I need an SD slot for transferring photos, although I could transfer directly from the camera, although I'd need an adapter for that is the hub only had usb-c ports. Oh and like you I don't needa headphone input on the hub as the audio interface has two of them already.
Great video, thank you. My experience with my two different iPad-hubs: one gets really hot (even if there is nothing connected to it=Stand-by) , the other one stays moderately cool. While testing the Stand-by-current on both, first one is consuming about 250mA, the other around 130mA. So power-consumption of these little hubs seems to be very different - and is never mentioned in the Tech-Specs of the manufacturers - how much current the Union draws ?
Been lookong for the same info. One would think manufacturers ratings/claims need to include hub's consumption needs - regardless of (in)efficiencies as per HDMI/ethernet/USBs/card readers, etc. - before they can advertise a claim for power ~budgeting consideration.
Hi! Is it possible to charge the iPad battery while copying an SD card directly to an external hard drive, without copying the files to the iPad’s internal storage? Thanks!
Can you ‘add’ power to these hubs via any of the ports other than the USB-C input on the end of the unit? I would like to read files from an SSD in an enclosure which seems to require more power than it’s getting from the hub. The hub is connected to an iPhone using the USB-3 camera adapter so obviously the only power it can get is from the lightning port. I’m not sure if devices attached to the camera adapter get power direct from the lightning cable or if the lightning cable only charges the phone and the phone ‘passes on’ power to attached devices. Could I connect a usb cable to one of the ‘blue’ usb ports or even the PD port to feed more power into it? (Does the PD port allow power in or only out?) Thanks!!!
super noob question so kindly excuse me in that regard, in this setup am i correct to assume the ipad automatically receives ethernet connection from the hub? which would mean in this setup where the ipad uses an usb c connection no additional apple connector is needed to use the Ethernet connection? thank you
Hello, would I be able to get audio output and power to my USB RGB razor kraken headphones while getting input from my blue yeti USB microphone? I use GarageBand on an ipad
Why don't I see "real USB-C" hubs? I mean 1x USB-C in and 4x or more USB-C out ? Is this not considered in USB-C system? It's clear to me, than all clients have to share the bandwidth of the master. But sometimes I want that
Anyone know of a hub which will allow me to connect a USB-C charger and a USB-C display to an iPad Pro at the same time. With no hub I have to choose between charging OR external display. My display is a portable USB-C only monitor.
I use it with a 30w Anker Nano Pro with no issues, typically powering iPad Air 4, deluge, UR-22C interface (low power, can be bus powered off the iPad) plus a synth or controller. Mine is a v1 but I’ve never uses the Ethernet or HDMI ports so it’s good for my needs. Are you daisy chaining a second passive hub there?
@@_triff, Yes - in another comment I read (via @oscarjmg), the daisy chained hub is *_non-_*powered (6:51 mentioned in those comments) so as to not risk damage to equipment from daisy chaining USB-C PD'd hubs off each other.
So I bought the older version of the 8-1 uni pro and it’s worked pretty well up until the point that I bought studio monitors and try to connect them to the hub while also connecting my NPK mini plus and it completely failed on me because I didn’t have a strong enough charger like the one that you’re describing in this video. That being said it has been somewhat of a headache trying to do sessions with this small 20 W power adapter. I need to find a 65 W power adapter ASAP. Also if I keep using the 20 W do you think that it will bring complications to the hub? Thanks for your videos

I saw on their website that you could get a long cable separately for the old version, but it only allowed 60w to reach the laptop. Is the longer cable here the same, or did they tweak it to get the normal 85w you'd get with the short cable? My laptop has a 65w charger, so I probably won't get this if it still only allows 60w.
how fast are the data transfers of the card refers, compared to other usb-c hubs (e.g. Anker 555, Ugreen 7in1)?
What about a hub that also has audio connector that you can listen through.
No audio jack……we are working with music ?
Still the best choice?
(Does the PD port allow power in or only out?)
Thanks!!!
Does this hub provides power to the other peripherals without an host (tablet/phone/pc) connected?
super noob question so kindly excuse me in that regard, in this setup am i correct to assume the ipad automatically receives ethernet connection from the hub? which would mean in this setup where the ipad uses an usb c connection no additional apple connector is needed to use the Ethernet connection? thank you
Good question here.
@JakobHaq does the hdmi output work for you? Whatever cable or output device I try to use I get no image
Is DRM or HDMI version (ARC?) affecting any of your experience? If a solution's been found, what did you do?
Hello, would I be able to get audio output and power to my USB RGB razor kraken headphones while getting input from my blue yeti USB microphone? I use GarageBand on an ipad
can you review anker 343?
Why don't I see "real USB-C" hubs?
I mean 1x USB-C in and 4x or more USB-C out ?
Is this not considered in USB-C system?
It's clear to me, than all clients have to share the bandwidth of the master.
But sometimes I want that
Anyone know of a hub which will allow me to connect a USB-C charger and a USB-C display to an iPad Pro at the same time. With no hub I have to choose between charging OR external display. My display is a portable USB-C only monitor.
I’ve had this hub for a few years now, great minds eh? 😀
@@_triff,
Yes - in another comment I read (via @oscarjmg), the daisy chained hub is *_non-_*powered (6:51 mentioned in those comments) so as to not risk damage to equipment from daisy chaining USB-C PD'd hubs off each other.
Unfortunately this usb hub doesn't have audio port
what app is that you are using
So I bought the older version of the 8-1 uni pro and it’s worked pretty well up until the point that I bought studio monitors and try to connect them to the hub while also connecting my NPK mini plus and it completely failed on me because I didn’t have a strong enough charger like the one that you’re describing in this video. That being said it has been somewhat of a headache trying to do sessions with this small 20 W power adapter. I need to find a 65 W power adapter ASAP. Also if I keep using the 20 W do you think that it will bring complications to the hub? Thanks for your videos
No sht. Bro 20w really? Dont ask questions like this.
How'd that choice to upgrade power supply turn out?
@@That_Handle I ended up getting a 120w power hub from mophie it fixed my problem
Why dont you use the acasis uysb hub + m2 ssd? Its way better and thgunderbolt + headphgone output
That thing is garbage af and ive had several power dropouts and connection issues along with others. Ive used ugreen and other unknown brands that never gave me trouble. Im looking to upgrade to calldigit soon
@@Criticalmazeit is really? I hear a lot of praise maybe it seemed too good to be true then.. it is perfect though; all in one and a audio output!
@@Criticalmazewill you get the ts3 plus or something? Its probably goos but pricey damn
@@Criticalmazewhat powersupply cable did you use? A high wattage one TB3 or 4 one? Thats rssential
@@shufflephunk my power supply is on point for everything else. Its a good rated one by anker more than enough power. I have Tb3 cables I don’t think tb4 is necessary in this use case
I was disappointed it only has 1 usb-c
It’s worth nothing without a headphone jack to be honest.
No more avaible 😢
If only it had an USB A cable 🥲
