Do you think that a 120Hz monitor is even that much more noticeable compared to a 144Hz?
Thanks, I guess it depends on if you prefer a thinner machine (GS65) or the y540, which isn't too thick but about average. Based on my own testing the 1070 is a little better than the 2060 but they are quite close, there would also be minimal difference between those two CPUs. You can of course upgrade memory later, but dual channel vs single channel (2 or 1 sticks) would make a bigger difference to game performance compared to either of the slight CPU/GPU differences. The y540 does also have the advantage of disabling Optimus which will give it a little boost in some games though. 120Hz is fine, can't say I really notice the difference with 144.

One great use case that I'll probably use gaming on a NAS for in the future is small mini itx PC builds as often those cases have limited drive support The case I have my eyes on now (lian li q58) only has 1 single 3.5 inch drive bay and 2 2.5 inch drive bays, technically 3 since you can use the 3.5 inch drive bay for 2.5 inch drives, and even the m.2 storage is often limited on mini itx boards, at best 2 m.2s So that's 2 m.2 slots, 2 2.5 inch drive bays, and 2 3.5 inch drive bay If money wasn't a concern then that wouldn't be a problem, but I have a goal to never have to reinstall a game again, to never run out of storage A NAS I the only way I could do that with a mini itx case without spending a fortune or dropping down to 5400rpm 2.5 inch harddrives, especially since my steam library is up to about 3 TBs and it's only been 2 years since I moved to PC, with games constantly getting bigger and me having more disposable income I can easily see that getting to the 15-20 TB range in 2-5 years, and while 20 TB drives are staring to exsit they cost a God damn fortune
Well to be fair, most people are still most likely using Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is just starting to come to devices like smartphones, so at this point it’s more of an optional thing to have. Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) I think is still enough for most people so long as multiple (7-10) devices aren’t connected to it all at once.
I guess compared to gigabit ethernet, wifi 4 is just meh, though I did test it in my old nas video a couple years ago. Still waiting for 6 to fully standardize before I upgrade, then I will start doing wifi tests in the laptop reviews!
Hi Jarrod, interesting video, do you have a video on how to set it up? I am thinking of building a NAS and use it for playing racing games on my 12 yo laptop (with wheels attached to my laptop), is it possible?
@@JarrodsTech Thank you for ur reply, I mean my laptop is incapable of playing any games at all. Haha My rough idea is to create a VM in the server, launch the game in the VM, but play from my laptop.
i just use an 8tb external hard drive, not really a NAS, but only as a backup in case something bad happens. thankfully haven't bought any really new games so only 90gb max per game so far yayy 2tb ssd with a 2nd slot
Yeah fair enough, that's how I used to do it too, but then I needed to access from more devices and leave it on to backup so in the end a NAS was the way to go for me.
I tried this with a nas with 2x4tb hdd and 120gb ssd cache, and honestly the loading times do take a bit longer than having local drives but it's very acceptable
if two people are using the same nas/ssd and playing the same game, does it impact or stress the nas enough to cause some sort of delay or bug ? and does a ssd on a nas or directly connected on the router always stays on? does it shorten the life time?
Unless you're doing the cheap way with using your router as NAS. It's expensive. Yes, you can actually make it cheap, but I'm staying with expensive. For a NAS, you use an HDD/SSD that's made for NAS. Not something you put in your daily pc. You also shouldn't use the same game files with another player. I don't even want to know what would happen to the save files. That means you should separate your files inside the NAS. Yes, you absolutely have to install the same game TWO TIMES on your NAS. Your NAS is only used if it's used. It depends, what raid system you're using and how fast your lan is. If you go for a stripped system, you shouldn't feel a difference. Otherwise, you should make sure you install the game on two different hard drives. Even if you only use a single hard drive, it will only impact you if both of you are on the loading screen. In that case, I would go for an SSD. You can actually configure your NAS to make your HDD sleep or always be active. NAS drives are made to never stop. You will kill your NAS drive if you stop them. If you want your drives to stop, don't buy NAS drives. YOU WANT A NAS DRIVE. Don't tell me you're going to put normal drives into your NAS. If you use your router as a NAS, you will probably use an external hard drive. You can't configure it whether it should go to sleep, but external hard drives normally sleep automatically if not used. It's stressful for hard drives to spin up and down all the time. Consider going for SSD.

Can i get some help bro :D!? This Technology is going to save me money! Having one big hub for every one in my network to install their steam games on is a life saver! :D!
Yeah probably, to me 99% of people setting this up won't even know what iSCSI is, so seemed fine to test it this way which still proved my point that it's acceptable to use.
@@JarrodsTech ah yes its fine, but you should also say the disadvantages of using SMB launching games on it, after all if you saturate a 1gigE connection you potentially using about 20-30% cpu usage on single core. might be worse on some lower end CPU and that still depends on the NIC that they use on their mobo as well (if its crap realtek, rip CPU usage. of course the large overhead of the SMB is not present in iSCSI if not very minimal. but dont mind my random rambling about this, its just my OCD in netoworking while watching this video just triggers me so much
could this work as a game server? if i wanted to run something like ark on it and own my own server... im not looking to host major server mainly personal ones with a max of 10 players (even though ill never really use more then 5 player slots)
I realize that, at that point, you'd never need to have multiple copies of a game, just put each game on the NAS and have every user map it as their steam folder.
@@ASUSTOR_YT only issue is that gigabit seems quite limiting for this purpose, if you guys had a 10gbps nas (preferably SFP+), it would be perfect for the task.
@@sagetechnology4913 We do have 10GbE NAS devices. We tend to avoid SFP+ because it's not as widely used as 8p8c. Especially if we are talking about use by gamers. 10GbE also needs proper CPU support and SSDs and that can get quite expensive and/or power hungry. The NAS featured is a 0-waste NAS. Most games are more than happy running from a hard drive while the NAS provides an Ethernet port that is the same speed as the hard drives inside providing little-to-no bottlenecks.
Me who was looking to buy a NAS and got like can i run a game stored in it THANKS for you help I'll give it a try and see if in longterm is worth it (wanna get rid off over 100GB games i play everyday)
I have a question I have the 2 bay version to that and I have a 10gbe port built in to my board. The problem I’m having is when I connect lan one to my pc I get really good speeds but I can’t connect to the Nas locally with my laptop unless I put the lan one into my switch and with lan 2 in my pc it only gets 118.
When you connect to the NAS directly your laptop won't get assigned an IP unless you have it set up to offer DHCP, you will need to manually set an IP on the same subnet that the NAS is using to talk to it.
Jarrod'sTech This thing is frustrating I still can’t figure it out. The only way it works correctly with Plex is if lan one is directly connected to my switch. If I do it that way I don’t get the 10gbe speed when I make a shared folder that I want. If I put lan one directly into my pc and lan 2 into the switch the speed is good but plex wont work just on the nas my pc needs to be turned on. I’m not good with network interface on this thing. There’s no videos on how to do this properly either.
Thanks man, I am getting an Synology DS1817+ 8 bay diskless for movies, tv shows, backup, and cctv. Was wondering about gaming end to throw it on, all with 6tb hdds and slowly upgrade to 16tb as needed... Biggest out there haha, that will be 4 of the 8 drive slots :) the extra 4 will be expansions little expensive as that is roughly 1000$ and looking at 1700$ total to get started :( but we'll worth it 😆 since I know gaming from one is an possibility.
Fair enough, yeah I use an external HDD when I travel just to back up video I shoot, I imagine playing games on HDD with USB speeds would not be great - I considered adding that test into this video but in the end didn't go ahead with it.
Bro a question if i want to run a lan party like 20 pcs and i want to storage all games in a nas server for example it if posible that the 20 pcs can play the same game simultaneously
I've never tried 20 simultaneous PCs. I guess we'd have to do such an experiment. :P But I think our newer Lockerstor 10 Pro with a Xeon chip inside would probably be better suited for that.
Whaaaa you have crappy internet!? But I'm jealous that you can upload in 4K! I still have no NBN and it took me 12 hours the other day just backing up a 10-minute 4K video on my phone to Google...
Well it's definitely above average compared to others in my country, but downloading all my games each week? Not going to happen 😅 I need to store them locally which was the main point haha
You can use WiFi, but load times will probably be slower if it's slower than Gigabit ethernet. If WiFi speed is similar, then similar difference, just depends on the connection.
Depends what it's for. For gaming the GX701 with G-Sync will most likely perform better. Battery life, Thunderbolt 3 and the 4K screen with the Aero would be better for content creation, plus normal location for the keyboard/touchpad.
2.5Gbe is kinda a waste of time since switches with it are very limited. Sure you could buy an adapter for 1 end...but why? Just stick with products that have 10Gb since it's standard
I have 11tbs of local storage, and a 1tb nas... these numbers dont add up... I wanna get a few actual large disks and migrate a bunch of this shit to my "Nas" Ive got less than 700gbs free atm...
Yeah basically, you can run basic web servers, run a surveillance system, heaps of things I didn't even cover 👍 I just figured the gaming side would be of most interest to people watching 😅
@@JarrodsTech True dat. Was thinking of creating a home server, seems fun but never got around to it. A friend of mine actually set one up just so he can use it as a vpn when he heads abroad....
A cheaper way to do this is to get a raspberry pi *4 with at least 2gb and a bung of usb 3.1 gen 2 to sata adapters and do it for less than 100 not 750 (not counting the drives on either price)
I think that 10Gig home network is still expensive, and you must have good router or switch with 10Gig switch chip, for example rb5009 have 10G switch chip, because when you dont have this chip, your network, will be unstable. Wifi also must have 2000mbps, when you can get 1000mbps both directions..... ( Download, upload ) I mean that gig is still good, and you can set up for example qos on router, for streaming from nas, for exaple to 900 mbps, when you have only gig switch chip in router. I mean, that nas can connect to 10G switch, you can use 5e cables only for gig connections, and other traffic goes from the router, Qos.
Probably, haven't tried and wouldn't recommend it, one machine may lock files and modify them could cause conflicts, worth a try but I'd probably copy them to multiple folders. NAS might even let you deduplicate the data and only write changes from each machine.

A NAS I the only way I could do that with a mini itx case without spending a fortune or dropping down to 5400rpm 2.5 inch harddrives, especially since my steam library is up to about 3 TBs and it's only been 2 years since I moved to PC, with games constantly getting bigger and me having more disposable income I can easily see that getting to the 15-20 TB range in 2-5 years, and while 20 TB drives are staring to exsit they cost a God damn fortune
WOW Jarrod,I didn't even know that there were 16tb hdd😯
Yeah I thought 14tb was the largest when I got them 😅
There's also 20TB
Hey I just saw your asus mothership gz7000 will you review it?
Absolutely yes! First videos on it will probably be up next week.
Does the game use the ram of your pc or the nas, and if it takes the ram from the nas and it requires 5 gb and you have 4 will it just crash?
Jarrod'sTech Can’t wait :)
Hi Jarrod, interesting video, do you have a video on how to set it up? I am thinking of building a NAS and use it for playing racing games on my 12 yo laptop (with wheels attached to my laptop), is it possible?
All you should need to do is map the NAS in windows as a network location and then set the game launcher to check that location for the game.
@@JarrodsTech Thank you for ur reply, I mean my laptop is incapable of playing any games at all. Haha
My rough idea is to create a VM in the server, launch the game in the VM, but play from my laptop.
No it's gonna suck
i just use an 8tb external hard drive, not really a NAS, but only as a backup in case something bad happens. thankfully haven't bought any really new games so only 90gb max per game so far
yayy 2tb ssd with a 2nd slot
Yeah fair enough, that's how I used to do it too, but then I needed to access from more devices and leave it on to backup so in the end a NAS was the way to go for me.
I tried this with a nas with 2x4tb hdd and 120gb ssd cache, and honestly the loading times do take a bit longer than having local drives but it's very acceptable
What is your personally laptop?
Gigabyte Aero 15x
@@JarrodsTech are you still running the 8th gen or the new 9th gen?
if two people are using the same nas/ssd and playing the same game, does it impact or stress the nas enough to cause some sort of delay or bug ? and does a ssd on a nas or directly connected on the router always stays on? does it shorten the life time?
I've been wondering if a nas would be a viable option for storage on the Playstation 5?
This is honestly my dream. Just install them to a nas !
😎
@@JarrodsTech IT WORKED!!!!!!!! I DID IT!!!!!!!!! I TRIED IT OUT I MADE THE FREENAS AND I AM ABLE TO RUN MY GAMES OF OF IT! :D
i have multiple gaming pc's and this actually can save me money :D!. yo just one quick question.
Can you help me out ? For whatever reason whenever i install a new game to my freenas with steam. For whatever reason i can't launch it. because i don't have execute permissions. So i relalized that i have edit the ACL settings. I have to tick the "Apply permissions recursively" setting every time i install a new game to the nas. ? do i have to repeat this process every time i install a new title to the NAS ? :0
Am i doing something wrong here ? Can i get some help bro :D!? This Technology is going to save me money! Having one big hub for every one in my network to install their steam games on is a life saver! :D!
@@ricardoricardo3232 Use iSCSI. Full NTFS permissions.
great you should make more videos about how to use NAS storage for gaming with multiple computers
What sort of things would you want to know about?
what type of connection you use here? iSCSI or SMB?
afaik, SMB is huge bottleneck so I guess try using iSCSI if you havent.
I'm just using SMB, works well enough and I get good speed, easier to use for me.
Jarrod'sTech try playing that have tons of small files, the load times will be much slower in smb
Can 2.5 gig nas with hdd be faster and better than local ssd? Cheaper as well?
I realize that, at that point, you'd never need to have multiple copies of a game, just put each game on the NAS and have every user map it as their steam folder.
You could. Why not? ;)
@@ASUSTOR_YT Nice
There’s no videos on how to do this properly either.
are you not limited by sata3 even if you had 5gbps would it not be fully saturated?
Yes, but, games require a mix of sequential and random performance. SATA III does provide 6 gbps though.
I only have USB hub with 4 slots of 2.0
Then using external hard drives for portability
Fair enough, yeah I use an external HDD when I travel just to back up video I shoot, I imagine playing games on HDD with USB speeds would not be great - I considered adding that test into this video but in the end didn't go ahead with it.
Bro a question if i want to run a lan party like 20 pcs and i want to storage all games in a nas server for example it if posible that the 20 pcs can play the same game simultaneously
I've never tried 20 simultaneous PCs. I guess we'd have to do such an experiment. :P
But I think our newer Lockerstor 10 Pro with a Xeon chip inside would probably be better suited for that.
OMG 16TB!! Give me two pls for my movies!!!
That's a lot of movies!
You can get a usb to 2.5Gbit Ethernet adapter and that will help you benchmark those laptops
I am actually thinking about that. I might have to upgrade to a 10gb nic from a 1.25 nic. I'd like to be able to run toms/emulators. Maybe steamm
can we have 10 gig ethernet in laptop and have 2 cables from nas and internet on it?
Does my PC need to be connected with wire to the router for this to work? Is it possible to play through Wi-Fi with 5Ghz?
You can use WiFi, but load times will probably be slower if it's slower than Gigabit ethernet. If WiFi speed is similar, then similar difference, just depends on the connection.
guys i need your help fast. ROG GX701 or AERO 17 XA i cant decide and i need to decide as soon as possible :(
Depends what it's for. For gaming the GX701 with G-Sync will most likely perform better. Battery life, Thunderbolt 3 and the 4K screen with the Aero would be better for content creation, plus normal location for the keyboard/touchpad.
I appreciate that but Jarrod ur a tech god just give me an answer and I will choose what you pick pleeeeeeaaaaseee
Normal non nas drive is fine if you use zfs and maintain it properly.
Can multiple people use the same nas at the same time and does the ram thats beïng used stack?
For games ofc*
There's actually a steam cache docker that you can use assuming ASUSTOR allows you to run a docker. hub.docker.com/u/steamcache
Nice, yeah you can run docker with this NAS.
YES! We support Docker! Feel free to download games Alà LTT style.
2.5Gbe is kinda a waste of time since switches with it are very limited. Sure you could buy an adapter for 1 end...but why? Just stick with products that have 10Gb since it's standard
The bigger problem is getting some installers to cooperate with samba shares. Especially unofficial ones, so to speak.
Is there something this but instead using tb3? And raid 0 . Plan buying omen 17
Yeah I believe there are storage enclosures that work over TB3 connection.
Cool video
Thanks!
could you put external ssd's insted of hdd into the nas?
why do you need to hook-up eathernet to the nas?
Will getting a nas be cheaper than buying big size ssd and get almost equal performance?
Depends on the game. Most games do not care or need SSD speeds and are perfectly happy running off a hard drive and even a NAS in this video.
can you still access your game files if the internet is down?
Yes.
If the router goes offline, No.
I have 11tbs of local storage, and a 1tb nas... these numbers dont add up... I wanna get a few actual large disks and migrate a bunch of this shit to my "Nas" Ive got less than 700gbs free atm...
Hmm local server? Interesting
We do sell budget NAS devices as well that make the process cleaner for $159.
Raid is better without USB. Asustor seem good but I have a big proxmox + Rockstor dual system 8+ bay beast.
( Download, upload )
I mean that gig is still good, and you can set up for example qos on router, for streaming from nas, for exaple to 900 mbps, when you have only gig switch chip in router.
I mean, that nas can connect to 10G switch, you can use 5e cables only for gig connections, and other traffic goes from the router, Qos.
Add to cart. . .and buy. 👌
How are you going to be using it? Interested to hear!
I'm first thought is that it would be better to run SAS drives. With STUPID read/write speeds but at a significant cost sink
I can't wait to try this with steam deck.
Are you able to run a game on multiple desktops?
Probably, haven't tried and wouldn't recommend it, one machine may lock files and modify them could cause conflicts, worth a try but I'd probably copy them to multiple folders. NAS might even let you deduplicate the data and only write changes from each machine.
Jarrod, you should use PUBG lite for benchmarks. It’s PUBG but free and it has better frame rates.
I honestly have not even heard of it, I'll check it out.
Thank you
@@JarrodsTech PUBG Lite isnt available in Australia yet. It's having a staggered world release. Just been rolled out in Europe last week. Jackfrags has a good review about it. Basically a graphically stripped down version of PUBG with an extra map made for potato PCs :)
Ah ok, to be fair even full pubg doesn't run too badly these days on mid-low range laptops, it's come a long way since initial release I think.
I agree. However, I wanted to know if lite could meet the 144 refresh rate
1. What happens if electricity or internet is down? Game over?
2. Why nas not have wired mode?
Yes. Unless you have it connected to a UPS, the NAS would turn off. Most people running a NAS would/should have it connected to a UPS.
I still have floppy disks and I mean the bigger ones
Lol
I uhh... Am I sensing something wrong or am I being paranoid??? 😂😂😂
Should do a 2021 version of this video man. With 10GBE
Lol
We totally agree. We have several 10GbE NAS devices in the works. Some already released as well. We'd love to send another one to Jarrod.
Just want to clarify, the load times and fps numbers... Was that by accessing the games from the NAS wirelessly? Or hardwired to it?
Would've been using wired Ethernet.
Then theres me... with 100mbps internet speed lol
RIP, I upgraded the whole house to 10 GB after this video
Wow, isn't this too early for another review. 😆
It's never too early 😎
You should have tried loading something like Rust. It wouldn't work on a spinning drive
I only get 18mb/s with 1gb ethernet and 200mb/s drives
Put your Minecraft world File into NAS and see what will happen?
Most likely won't be an issue!
I've never heard someone speak from a high register to a low register so consistently from sentence to sentence. I really wonder if this is just a reading/performance voice, or is this completely conversational?
Had trouble with this one as every sentence your voice raises then lowers at the end.
holy shit 64tb

Woah mothership 😍😍
🤩
Own an Asus Mothership, can't afford a Wifi 6 router/access point :(
Haha yeah it's rough 😅 to be fair though the mothership was borrowed!
Seagate drives less likely to fail... hahahaha good one!
To be clear, I was talking about NAS drives in general vs non NAS drives.
