It has been a hard luck season thus far for Napoli, stuck on 1 win and carrying the albatross of 5 draws, they languish in 12th place. While they currently sit 4th, times aren’t exactly good in Paris, they were #1 twice this year and were 2nd as recently as MD07, but have also been dragged down by an abundance of draws, a 9-9 differential since MD02 can’t be good for self-confidence either. They can only hope tonight is a get-well match.
It did start that way, Kylian Mbappe continues his torrid run to open 2020, getting his 8th goal of the year in the 23rd. Lorenzo Insigne would take the wind out of their sails in the 36th however, a hard blast from short range that bested GK Navas near side. Both clubs had chances for the duration of the half, though the best belonged to Napoli.
That would continue into the 2nd with Paris struggling to get into gear, but Navas kept it 1-1 and PSG caught a break with a counter run in the 69th, Pablo Sarabia, a mirror image shot of Insigne’s earlier, put Paris up.
It looked like the result would be there for them, if not a feel-good victory, than at least a victory for Paris, but Napoli had different ideas. In the 89th Piotr Zielenski nailed the equalizer, ending a frenzied last minute assault upon the PSG goal with a volley from mid-air, after Paris defenders Bernat and Kimpembe ended up skying the ball between their contact.
There remained time for PSG and they did get off a shot, though not on target. Once possession shifted to Napoli, time ran out on everybody. For the 2nd straight match, Paris draw against a bad club, last week it was Lazio, and just like last week, the bad club out-played them.
This has got to end as Paris playing down to their opponents was not an issue last season, thus becoming an unfortunate development in what is otherwise believed to be a promising campaign. Next week they face #1 Juventus in Turin so there won’t be any playing down to at all, but PSG will need to drastically improve their play to have any chance.
MD10: Napoli host United; Paris at Juventus
