I was in and out of house parties, bars, clubs and warehouses in Chicago during this era. I lived with 2 DJs. Looking back, we completely took for granted how "present" we were. Much as been said about the lack of phones-and no doubt 80% of it was not having a flashing dopamine slot machine in the pocket at all times. But the proto-internet was also such a sweet spot. There was NO SHAZAM. Many DJs put tape over the records or white labeled. You heard an amazing track and knew it very well might be the last time you ever heard it. You remembered the DJ and hoped they'd play it again if you saw them again. And if someone else dropped the track, or a remix, BOOM to the moon. It was all pretty ephemeral but deep. A beautiful mix. The DJ was a character at the event, but not the main character. That was the dance floor. You went to these places to feel a positive thing with people you just met, or friends you made in the scene. You went to vibe. To feel high. To feel alive. It was a great moment in time.
damn , never thought of it like that, how rare and special every song was back then since you couldn't just look it up on your phone and play it anytime. kind of like when I was a kid having to wait until it came on mtv or the radio, but worse since you didn't even know what the song was. really dope though. makes it more special and you appreciate it more. enjoying the moment

@@chuchaftw The people who were making electronic music back then had grown up in the 70s/80 world of real musicians and analog music. That was where their roots were. New guys never knew that world.
imho its because new music now is basically based on algorithms and what sells NOW. Not that im saying music back in the day wasn't the same but before there was a scene for all genres. I remember growing up in the 90's and you had stores that sold "rave clothing", "hip Hop clothing", Latin "HIp Hop" clothing... so you were invested in the culture of that music. Now with the advent of mp3's and streaming you don't need to be invested in the scene. You had clubs that only played house. clubs that only played Hip hop/R&B. You had clubs that played Latin music (salsa, merengue) that had strict dress codes (no t-shirts, hip hop clothing, sweats, no running shoes, etc) You had to wear slacks and a collared shirt and dress shoes/boots or else no entry (My friend got denied entrance to such clubs cus he was not dressed like the requirements) Yeah TRY DOING THAT NOW!!!!! but it did have the effect of feeling like you were being part of a community of like minded people. You searched for people who liked the culture, music and wanted to be part of it. Now a days its just free for all.... there is no sense of comminity or anthing... just show up, pay cover/entrance fee and fuck off Ha ha ha@@chuchaftw
