      I jumped straight into watching this review when I spotted it on the Money Heist subreddit, and I agree with most of your points, though I still like how they changed Berlin here. What I've noticed is that Netflix is ALREADY trying to appeal the audience from the success of Squid Game, seeing how Sang-woo's actor plays Berlin here. Ironically, despite being just as colorful (if not more) than Money Heist: Korea, Squid Game still managed to capture the vibes it aimed for (not really as deep as Money Heist, but you get the point).
      I think #2 of "What it Should Have Been" could be the best decision for Netflix to take if they wanted to expand the franchise to other countries, having at least one heist team inspired by the Spanish one, though it could've been more enjoyable to me if there was some major twist from it (e.g. the heist place being a shopping mall or department store, even if it sounds pretty silly).
      Although, I have to note you that this is only the first part of Season 1, not the entirety of it. A second part is scheduled to come out later this year.

    • @andrewreviews
      @andrewreviews  2 роки тому +2

      First off, thank you for taking your time to watch the review!
      I do think the way they changed up Berlin was interesting, it is only sad that the literal dialogue sometimes was a bit off. I think a lot of the characters would have worked way better if the dialogue itself was better.
      And yes, I am aware this is only half of the season, hence why I focused more so on the characters than the plot. Because I do think there is still a chance it will improve in the second part. Albeit I don’t want to get my hopes up too much for that :’)

    • @andrewreviews
      @andrewreviews  2 роки тому +2

      I missed your second paragraph! Yeah, we are very much on the same page if we are being serious [the third option was a bit for sarcasm’s sake]. Because even in our own world, it already inspired some robberies, so it would not be that far fetched to have the spanish heist inspire someone else in the universe of the show

    The professor is emotionally vacant and therefore didn't consider the possibility of relationships, others or his own, interfering with the plan. Having him already be established to have a relationship with Raquel ruins it and takes away the element of him having to learn to embrace the emotional connections within the group rather than reject them as an unaccountable variable.

  • @shadepizza4217

    They should've made it explicitly clear that it's a shared universe. Have the Korean police go much harder on getting them out to avert having it go as bad as Spain, have the new professor not be as good, but acknowledge these as character flaws he tried to overcome. Don't have the same crew doing the same plan, make it clear that this is a different heist that was inspired by the first.

      Sounds like a great idea in paper, but I doubt the political side of the showbiz in either korea or spain would say otherwise since we got what we got anyway. a culture shock of a show

  • @loyaltysentry3660
    @loyaltysentry3660 Рік тому +122

    I'm Spanish and currewntly learning Korean. Imo theres a HUGE disconnect from the Spanish culture/language from the Korean one. Spain and it's people are very outgoing, no filter, direct. Korean is a high context language where manners and respect are above anything else.
    Watching Money Heist in Spanish, theres many details foreigners miss, e.g. Nairobi has some talking quirks, like the way she modifies words to sound slightly more raunchy, or her sound effects. Or take officer Tamayo, who has a wide range of swears he uses that make his speeches entertaining.
    The whole show is kind of a culture shock for foreigners, lots of sexual references, very creative insults and generally a story about a war against the government. It simply cannot be replicated by another culture, especially not by one that is almost the complete opposite to the Spanish one.

    • @loyaltysentry3660
      @loyaltysentry3660 Рік тому +29

      Theres more things that cant be replicated if the show isnt spanish, ill give u examples.
      -Berlin and the professor sometimes speak Italian (singing, or to the monks in s5), many Spanish people have learnt other romanic languages, so this connect between cultures isnt that far off. My dad learnt Italian and could def sing a song in Italian
      -The entire "the government is corrupt and evil" plot in the 2nd part (seasons 3-5),. the whole season and its story line is very adapted to Spain, it'd be hard to say that Rio gets tortured in Argelia. Where'd he go,, Mongolia? It has to be somewhere nearby.
      -Money Heist brings many progressive ideas e.g. in S1 we see Raquel struggle with not being taken seriously by her male coworkers, later having to deal w the consequences of her leaving the workforce even though she continuously got misogynistic comments. How would a Korean show remake this? Korea is quite conservative and most celebrities dont even openly say theyre feminist
      -More differences in the way characters talk. Denver/Nairobi are raunchy, Monica is v articulate, Tokyo swears a lot but speaks normally. etc

    The thing is, I thought professor and Korean Raquel knew each other for months because he had approached her strategically in order for her to be a key to the escape! I thought he was saving his last card, only to use her in the pivotal moment and save the day. But no, I expected too much of the writers (or should I say, script translators). Though their relationship was cute, it had no place in this series. Overall, apart from Tokyo (which is played by a skilled famous actress), every other character fell flat for me. They can't expect to copy dialogues without considering the cultural differences that wouldn't permit this kind of adaption. I watched it after the original, because I love kdramas. But I realised, as you did in this video, that a remake has to have 1. Purpose 2. Distinct style and 3. Twists that the original doesn't

    • @DS94everXev

      Why take Tokyo put of the complaint?
      In the original she was a sexy hot head. In this she is an androgynous robot.
      Look at the first 11 minutes of each series. The Korean Tokyo is bland. Nothing going on between her and the men.
      In the original, she'd got 3 of the heisters checking her out.
      In the Korean version she is stoic and non emotional.
      This isn't the same character. And they ruined all of them. Not a single character is anywhere near as good as the original.
      I started to cheer for the police 20 minutes into the series. That's how bad this version is.

    Truthfully I couldn’t get past the first two episodes. I love K-dramas and I love Money Heist but maybe the two shouldn’t have come together. I wrote it off at first but then I thought no, let me give it chance. The acting in k-dramas can be so over the top almost bordering on theatrical and I think putting that with the heaviness of Money Heist just doesn’t work. Even culturally, I was wondering how this adaptation would mesh. Korea is pretty conservative and Money Heist was not afraid to show skin so that was another thing that threw me off. Also in Money Heist Tokyo and Rio have a relationship and the way Rio was written in the adaptation and how he acted was too childish.

    They only take the cosmetics but not the core of the movie. It's a mere "Money Heist" while the Spanish one embodies the true spirit of "La Casa de Papel" which reflects on the pseudovalue of money. It would be much interesting if they built another world around the Korean economic system with a shared message between the series. Perhaps the Korean gang is inspired by the event of the first heist in Spain.

  • @Molly-iw1rc
    @Molly-iw1rc Рік тому +8

    I feel like it is money heist but in a different genre, but sometimes you shouldn't change the genre or tone when remaking a show. I think some people like shows that feel less serious (Korean money heist) and some people like a show that is more serious (og money heist). But I think this show's original tone fit everything perfectly for the culture and the context, but the Korean one has a tone that feels weird for the subject.
    I also hate what they did with Nairobi's character like I feel like they made her and the other characters more one note, which sucks and makes it feel more like a stereotype of the original characters without thinking about what the original characters really were.
    They could've made a different show instead of making it connected to the original show that I feel like did the plot and characters better.
    But I'm glad some people enjoyed it I guess, I couldn't finish the first episode.

I also like korean río, i think he has more likeable personality than the original, and i like the actor who plays berlín, his acting is good and i think he went for another direction in terms of his personality instead of being straight up a copy. and yeah, the professor is awful, i understand that it was a hard role to do but... it's awful.

    The show is an insult, plain and simple. The show is a mockery of the original, its cringe and bleak, the characters are so bizarre with such an obvious cultural dissonance to the script and storyline. That being money heist is a revolution to the latin population in a sense, and bella ciao holds that significance, the professors dismay with corruption and his fathers execution pushed him to fulfil the heist, the remaks is a glorified kdrama. They took the characters carved out the soul, and made them hollow. Now, i like a kdrama, the glory was insane, parasite was (and is) oscar worthy, bloodhounds etc... a common theme here is they're impactful and meaningful stories that dont ride off the fame of another.

    I loved the original for the character growth and intensity of scenes dipping between story, violence, and love all in this big awesome soup, but it also felt like a celebration of spanish culture. If Korea could have taken it into their own vibes and cities and really delved into the affects and what ifs of the aftermath of the korean war and subsequent events it could have been a compelling shift

The filming was awful, characters are simultaneously one note and bland, and the story is spoonfed as if they don't trust the ADULT audience to understand that the Joint Economics would have complexities. Instead they want the audience to have one simplified opinion about it. The way characters are introduced are as if they're just props to a story and not real people with actual backgrounds. You don't need more than one episode to introduce everyone well. The cast is stacked, so it's clearly the creative and directive teams. ( sorry for writing a lot, I just finished the show and I felt that this video was very interesting )
    honestly at first I high disagreed with your points and I felt that you were just biased, but after continuing the video you started opening my perspective and bringing light to the differences. however, I still think some of these could be disbunked/disagreed. for example i feel like the different appeals sort of matter, ive watched some korean shows and there are definitely differences through the atmosphere compared to other shows.
    something else that I noticed was the professor is humane and emotional in the Korean version, which is probably why he made some dumb choices that affected the plan. I can definitely see why he decided to approach the inspector 2 months before the plan, to try to diffuse suspicion and try to get to know her better, but couldn’t that amount of time be deducted? I really don’t understand how he couldn’t comprehend that maybe he might’ve caught actual feelings, ( which he did ) and potentially mess up the plan. honestly if it weren’t for the inspector liking him back and sympathizing for him, I definitely don’t think they would’ve made it this far.
    another thing that bothered me was also the lines, I completely agree with you on how the lines were unnecessary and a bit weird too? like why were they talking about THAT while in the middle of negotiating a literal hostage situation, and her praising him for it calling him a good negotiator with almost 0 context just absolutely doesn’t add up.
    overall, I honestly really enjoyed it and I would consider it a really good show. however, I definitely understand why some of the og money heist fans could be upset and dislike the version, but I think that it has a lot to do with different cultural appeal maybe?

    some of ya'll thinking this one is greater than the original are just coping or straight up simpin for korean remakes, this one is one those remake that shouldn't have been made in the first place, especially if its this bad.

    I loved the kdramafied version of the original money heist. The original bored me to death since episode 1. I like lighthearted series the most so I liked the korean version of course

    the koreans didn't know how to convey the suspense and adrenaline rush you got got from the original. also, Alba flores as Nairobi is just undupeable, the remake is like a decaff version. and though the original lost following towards the end it still close in a way that was likeable
