the special effects/costume dept need all the awards for this
We should give them awards til we’re blue in the face.
no
@@ZacV47 umm no
No
For getting make up and costume a coffee?
The delivery of "what happened to women supporting women, bitch?" killed me. 🤣
That shit had my dying
Glad I wasn’t the only one🤣
Need a t-shirt with this 🥳
This phrase must be on t-shirts and handed out where women rally against other women in protest.
Stick around for the cameras to pan out at the end to see the blue lights go off and all the players wave to the camera! Seriously some amazing practical effects for this sketch, genuinely looked like everyone was in blue paint. Fooled me!
@@stuwest5862 I noticed too there looks like something resembling a gel to the far left of the shot when it pans out at the end
Fun fact the color change was done live with camera “color filtering” lighting was orangey and so was the costumes to show the blue.. think of it as a green screen or blue screen effects. That means makeup, SFX, costumes, set design and scenic artist, and more had to be on point to make it all work and come together. Great job everyone. 👍
Fooled me too. I’m a body painter and I was marveling at the consistency of the blue color and wondering who painted them.
i was wondering how they would get the blue paint off in time for another sketch until the pan out. you're right, the practical effects are amazing!! i thought they were painted blue the whole time
I thought it was pretty obvious there was a filter or something
I can't believe the snl costume department actually went to pandora to get real life Navi to do this. Underrated department.
No, that's not all what happened. If you look really closely you can tell that some of these are actually genetically engineered avatar bodies, mind linked to the cast members who are remote controlling them off screen
@@channeln9ne controlling them from Pandora
They did a really good job on this skit !!!
Oh, make no mistake about it, they did go there. Just ask the head of the SNL costume department, George Santos! (The man's a freaking genius!)
That was painful tbh SNL isn’t the same
Love the nod to Neyteiri crying for most of the sequel.
Wouldn't you not cry if aliens came to your planet, killed your friends and family and pets?
She doesn't have much screen time there.
@@Сайтамен Yes, cause the focus was not on them, but the kids.
First, her dad in part 1. Then, her son in Way of Water. She can't catch a break. Aaah! 😆
@@TraceguyRune the movie wants us to sympathize and not invest. Killed off a character who carried no weight in the story only to motivate the others
that was a MASTER CLASS in costume/lighting design, making everyone look blue from head-to-toe without a stitch of makeup.
It wasn't lighting, by the way. It was a post-effect hue shift, which is why the colors look like a video game played in color blind mode.
They had white spots for makeup at least
@@PinkSpaceHippy true, but it's an in-camera effect done live. It may be possible to do on RED and other cameras. You can also notice the actors have a different hue than the crew, so they may have a color spot on them or the makeup dept sprayed them with something to bring out the effect more.
Ohhh no that is high school level
They were painted but a redish color instead of blue then the red had its hue shifted in camera I guess cause it's less makeup that way since skin tone is naturally warm?
Kudos to the art department for this scene wow. They did all this during a commercial break.. Freaking impressive
This sketch resides in the balance of incredible set and costume design, silly/funny premise, and great use of the host. Well done!
Who at NBC writes all of these fan raves?
@@willowsloughdxol, the OP is literally an SNL review podcast. This is what they do - and they do it well. I’m sorry you can’t imagine people finding something funny when you don’t, but you’re not the arbiter of comedy.
The SNL repeat episode that was on just before this one was from 2010 with Sigourney Weaver and they did an Avatar sketch in that one. Must have had all the leftover costumes.
How is this using her well? You wouldn't even know it was her if you didn't already
@@kitm141 well said !
Aubrey is so good, I’m even forgetting that it’s her. Even in the black lotus skit, I didn’t realize
She is definitely a Chamaeleon❣️🥰
Was she in the video?
@@ahnaftahmeedkaif974 Yes, with Heidi.
Low-key, Ego is hilarious as a crying Neytiri.
I was wondering how practical this sketch was to execute in a lineup with all of them in full blue makeup. Wondered if this was the last sketch of the day but that wouldn't explain how fast they got painted between the last sketch and this one.
And then, the reveal at the end: this was a Hue shift done in post. Brilliant.
They used blue lighting actually
@@tylerkochman1007 check the footage, if the lighting was blue everything would be blue, including reflections and you can see they have a clear white fill light. They're just warping the Hue spectrum with a simple filter.
You can see that the skin tone of the crew at the end also warps color in the transition.
No post in SNL
@@christiansenator It's not post as in editing/VFX. It's a post effect on the camera feed. It can be done live in the control room (régie).
@@johnnyrodrigues2128 Still a live effect (not post) because they're broadcasting it at the same time. I think some cameras can do this too with a remote controller, like RED. They may have used a warm filter on a spot light and the makeup may have sprayed something on the actors to bring out the effect more. (They have a different hue than the crew).
Not “butch ladies from Arizona!” 😂😂😂
IKR I feel so seen
Heidi is hilarious 😂
Whaaaat? We got humans up in here?
Most underrated cast member
She was the best in this. Perfect for that part
Thank you! Yes, I love Aubrey, and she was amazing, but Heidi never seems to get love for what she brings every day.
She's a gem. I've loved her since the troubled teen sketch (with the straws!)
james cameron took years to make avatar 2 and snl made this masterpiece in a fraction of the time
I love how Aubrey Plaza is just blue Bruno Mars
Oh my GOD she is 💀
Bluno Mars
@@Peterljr888 lmaoo
As someone from Arizona, I was NOT expecting that to be the direction this skit went.
Seriously, me too. Feels like very cliche niche suburban Scottsdale dad jokey or something. We don't fly that way in Tucson.
"Screaming lady here we go..."
kills me everytime
Felt like Keenan was doing his best to get Mikey to break.
I feel like there might have been some kind of cue card mishap offstage.
@@maryschroeder1533 Maybe, but the cast messing with each other isn't unusual and Mikey looked like he was ready to break a couple of times.
@@Freeden They definitely mess with each other all the time, but something about the timing of it makes me think that Mikey and Kenan were stalling for time.
They’re we’re stalling for time as Aubrey’s ear fell off and she was probably trying to put it back on but it didn’t work
Jake Sullllllllay
I legitimately said "wow" at my computer screen when they panned out and turned off the blue light.
I could've _sworn_ they were wearing blue and had blue makup on! Insanely well done!
I think it was probably a live hue shift on the computer, you can see the people in the background in the wide shot look really low contrast before they turn it back to normal, looks like very clean costuming/lighting either way
Plus you can see the live screen at the left side at the end and it’s still blue hued
@@TravisMcCoy14 oh snap, you're right! either way, very well done!!
@@TravisMcCoy14 Thanks for pointing that out! I went back to see it too
I'm lookin at you cheeseburger 😂😂😂
This use of blue light is great. I’m not planning on seeing this movie but this funny as hell. Keenan is stealing this scene. Such a treasure
Why not? It's a great movie well-worth seeing.
@@da-be-ju - didn't care for the first one -- why watch the second?
@@MindlessTurtle didn’t care for the first either. Second is a lot better and the visuals are amazing. Worth seeing in 3D without a doubt.
Missing outtttt
If you've seen Avatar then storywise.........you've already seen Av2.
It's an amazing technical achievement though.
Wow, mad props to the lighting team. The “cleanup” shot at the end was wild!
Just so long as they've stopped using the Papyrus font, it's cool! I would have loved a Ryan Gosling cameo. 🤣
hookah bars, Shakira merch, off brand teas...
I was watching closely for a Papyrus font to show up somewhere..
But they changed the font for the sequel, right? RIGHT?!?
It's the way "Jake" was trying to comfort Neytiri 🤣🤣🤣
4:08 all it took was some blue lighting lol. bruh
All that money wasted on SFX… smh James Cameron
Aubrey's right ear is hanging on for dear life the entire skit, and at the end it finally falls off lol.
🤣🤣🤣
Unintentionally appropriate.
Looks like Mikey Day noticed, too. He asked "Are you alright?" with a slight giggle during the scene.
But Aubrey's just playing on thru & keeping it going worked out fine. If viewers noticed it, -no big deal! It added to the humor of the skit, and viewers' attention was drawn to Aubrey's performance anyways!
3:19 HE NOTICES AUBREYS EAR FALLIN OFF "YOU ALRIGHT?" DEAD
The way they carry their tails 😂
I love when they pull back the camera at the end of really good special effects sketches.
As someone who knows many butch women in Arizona, this is accurate.
I will never get sick of Keenan always being the rational one
The fact that this skit is exactly 4min and 20sec did not go unnoticed
Well not really lol
The most underappreciated part of S.N.L. is the makeup department. The fact they body painted a dozen people blue in like 15 minutes for a 4 minute segment is amazing.
See 4:05
they did it super fast with the magic of just turning on some blue lights, ya dingus
@@zaphenath6756 no need for the attitude lmao

Before they opened their mouths I was laughing. Pure brilliance 🤣🤣🤣
The Maricopa County Milf Hunters... Hilarious

the way aubrey leaves at the end like her chaperone came to pick her up from school 😂
I love how Aubrey's ear is like sideways LOLOLOL
“It's chabegwai!”🤣😂🤣😂
"..Butch ladies from Arizona." I wonder which writer had flashbacks and/or repressed memories - good or bad?..
It was Michael Longfellow and they were probably stepmoms his father married (or one was a stepmom and one was his real mom).
@@canaisyoung3601 do you know what butch means? 😭
I liked it when Keenan said the maricope counter of milf hunters 🤣🤣🤣

That was chaotic lol
Grand Canyon types 😂😂 im fkn weak
They could’ve avoided all of that by just looking at their hands. 😂
"Appreciate it, Jah-Kei"
"It's Jake."
this was James Camerons exact Vision
Love seeing some positive Arizona representation
Michael Longfellow, Aidy Bryant, and David Spade being cast members from that state wasn't enough?
My mind is blown at the fact none of them were in blue paint.
SNL did a great job on the costumes. Saved me money on going to the Avatar sequel!
Saved? Not at all. Nothing in the skit is from the sequel
I haven't laughed out loud at a sketch in years... but that ear had me rolling laughing!!
"Let's get out of here!"
*Performs Autofellatio*
Devon must have had a blast this episode! So happy for him!
Best overall makeup/effects I’ve seen on SNL in years.
The SNL costume department sure has come a long way since the days of Bee Hospital.
Sarah Sherman looks dead on accurate for that character
The whole time I’m thinking, did they pre-record this? How did they paint themselves blue that fast?! And then all of the lights come on at the end.🤯🤯🤯 Amazing what lighting techs can do!
As a resident of Arizona I have one word
Yes
I can’t be the only one that thought they were gonna use the tails as vibrators.
I thought they were vaping with them 😂
If they ever did an R rated Avatar film or series it would 1000% feature 'what (else) can we stick our tails to?'
Great skit. Love the reveal at the end. The camera work was awesome! Kudos, SNL!
3:15 Was really expecting them to go "How do you know what basketball is?" And then all turn on him😆
FINALLY, BRING BACK THE PAPYRUS REFERENCES!
“It was ‘Frito’ this whole time!” No one got that. 🙂
Maybe we’re thinking of different things, but I thought it was some what a reference to The Godfather part 2.
@@cooperwolfe5478 Correct!

Sarah Sherman is an absolute, hilarious baddie.
The vapes 😂
Mikey Day reaches 500 sketches on Saturday Night Live. Congrats. 😃😃👏👏👏
Add 200 to that. It was 500 sketches!
Mikey Day reaches his 500th sketches on SNL.

Damn snl just made the movie industry look like they have been wasting those big budgets with what they did here with the costumes and some good lighting
Never saw the movies but I'm willing to bet this was good enough.🤣

The costumes are cute. I'm glad for the playful energy this brings. All the people involved it's good stuff.
I like the lesbian avatars best!
Nice lighting effect...! Haven't seen one like that since shutting-down my last aquarium.😒
PAPYRUS!
I don’t give a fuck about anything else, the fantasy of doing a production with this level of passion and professionalism from the costume/set dept. would let me die happy.
I lost it when they panned over to them playing basketball
SNL has this art of finding young people that make you laugh as soon as you see them.
I was SHOCKED to see it was all lighting tricks. I thought for sure they'd rushed face makeup during a commercial break or something. 100% had me fooled.
Wow! I didn’t even recognize Aubrey. She is more diverse than I originally thought. She did great! Hilarious!
I was wondering the whole time how they had time to all get in blue make up during a live show, and then the post sketch pull out scene happened. Impressive
That cry was too perfect!
these characters need to be brought back lmao SO GOOOOD
Maricopians are so popular even Na'vians've heard of em!
"The Maracopa Milf Hunters" that is a great name for a basketball team.
I'm not even recognizing Audrey here - goes to show when a person is typecast but has the range/talent, the impact it can have on other roles.
Vicky and Christine went to Pandora straight from Barcelona😂
Rest in piece SNL
Love the make-up and practical effects for this 4:20 sketch.
Heidi did a great job but man, all I can think about is how perfect Kate would have been in this!
this is better than actual Avatar
