lovely video. Zed I've said it before and I'll say it again: I know UA-cam tries to drive you to short 10 minute segments but I for one really appreciate these long form videos that let me watch and learn from masters like Richard and the others you've interviewed. And Richard, thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge with the world.
Hi Josh, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for your support, I truly mean that. I know these longer format videos are not for everyone, but my aim is to encapsulate as much information as possible when filming the multitude of crafts folk, Richard included. Stay blessed and happy carving my friend ~Peace~
I would love to have a proper knife like that one. In the mean time, I used a utility knife with the swappable razor blades to carve a letter opener and a scoop for coconut oil out of an African hardwood called Makore. To get the inside curve I used a tiny little carving tool like a gouge but only 1/4" wide. It was not ideal and took forever, but it was fun to do.
You simply clean with a wet sponge (soft side), detergant is ok to use and dry naturally, thats it. It does not go rancide so long as the oil has properly cured ~Peace~
Oi mate! Ya got a loicense fer dat butter spreader!? Awesome project - will try for sure! ... and why didn't anyone mention that you look like brothers - man even the noses point in the same direction;-)
Thank you! My yearly fee's have been paid, I am fully licensed to spread. As for the resemblance, I'm actually Zed's stunt double in a yet to be announced Netflix production, a Bushcrafter Sherlock Holmes type thing. I had to fall 16ft out of tree. 9 takes it took!

Nice to hear you had fun! 🙂✌👍 I recommend the Mora 106 sloyd knife, it's the best of anything near its price range.
@@talkin-ape thank you for the tip. maybe I should start with the Mora 106 sloyd and add a custom one if I stick with it.
Great to hear you improvising and without doubt you use whatever tools you have available, then acquire more specialist ones over time ~Peace~

How do you clean such a wooden spreader? With detergents? And doesn't it get rancid quickly?
You simply clean with a wet sponge (soft side), detergant is ok to use and dry naturally, thats it. It does not go rancide so long as the oil has properly cured ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors Thank you very much for your answer!

Unexpected acceleration 🤣
some of these knives are boy racers :P
@@talkin-ape 😂 haha 😂
Spreaders for days Sean... ~Peace~
That mystery wood is YEW. Wouldn’t use it for cutlery/food stuff, because yew is poisonous.
Many thanks for the insight Rob ~Peace~
It's not Yew, of which I'm very familiar with, It turned out to be Tree of Heaven, which has been used for wooden food steamers for a long time.
If it were Yew, I totally agree. I never use Yew for anything more than decorative bowls, bud vases and pots for pens etc.
@@talkin-ape phew!
How to carve a butter spreader with a butter spreader lolz
