It is human nature to want to be liked and accepted. But, this often leads to people worrying too much about what others are thinking about them. This kind of excessive worrying can have a negative effect on life. It can be so devastating that it interferes with our ability to feel at ease with ourselves and around others.
This truth is wisely and deftly brought out by poet Anand Bakshi in the following lines…
    “Kuchh to log kahenge
    logon ka kaam hai kehnaa
    chhodo bekaar ki baaton mein
    kaheen beet na jaaye rainaa”
(“People will say something or the other,
    it's their business to talk,
Ignore it, lest the night should pass
    pondering over these useless matters..”)
This is a song from the 1972 colour movie, ‘Amar Prem’, based on the Bengali short story ‘Hinger Kochuri’ by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. Screenplay was written by Arabinda Mukherjee. The movie was directed by Shakthi Samanta.
There are six songs in this movie written by Anand Bakshi set to tune by RD Burman. All the tracks were melody based and a music connoisseur can trace the prominent appearance of Raag Khamaj (A favourite of the SD/RD Burman School) in three songs - “Raina Beeti Jaye" (in the antara), "Kuchh Toh Log Kahenge" and "Bada Natkhat Hai Yeh".
The song, "Chingari Koi Bhadke" of Kishore Kumar is considered as one of the best of RD Burman.
"Kuchh Toh Log Kahenge" - Song Context: - Sharmila Tagore plays Pushpa, whose husband throws her out of the house after marrying another woman. A man from her village sells her to a brothel in Calcutta, and although this was never the kind of life she had imagined9 for herself, Pushpa finds friendship among the women of the establishment and a loving relationship with Anand (Rajesh Khanna), a wealthy youngster, who comes to the brothel to escape his unhappy marriage and becomes her regular client. Their relationship gradually drifts into a genuine love affair . But of course, other people don’t understand this; so they do their best to keep Pushpa away from Anand. Anand doesn’t care what people think and he tries to ally Pushpa’s fears and sadness. He actually, knows how to make her smile through those tears. This is the context of the song “Kuch Toh Log Kahenge.." sung by Kishore Kumar.
The song with minimal percussion illustrates how efficiently the raag framework was used in the genesis of a song that qualified as light music, creating such a monumental impact. Just get immersed in the song and discover how Raag Khamaj gently dissolves into the notes of Raag Kalavathi. This is an epic composition that takes light music to impressive heights !!
