_Small tips_ - Breath-mint tins are the perfect size to store loose pins in. Off-white thread will match to just about any colour if you run out of your preferred colour - same goes for off-white zippers. I keep a small stash of 3 different lengths of off-white and black zippers. I use my snips to pull threads - works just as well as a seam ripper.
Mock-ups are your friend. Even the professionals have to go through multiple iterations to get where they want to go - around 4 or 5 for the body and 1 or 2 of the sleeve. This was the lesson that took me the longest. Finally came to terms with the rigmarole by realizing every toile is practice for the final fabric.
How wonderful that your Mum's friend is there to teach you the beginning steps. Well done. Enjoy the process!

Thank you so much for the tips!! These are game-changers. I haven't gotten round to making/getting a pin cushion yet so I've just been sticking them back in the pinwheel thing one-by-one. The off-white thread and off-white/black zipper tip is going to be a such a time-saver for sudden projects / emergencies because otherwise I would be buying them one at a time each time. I will also be readying my mindset for the reality of mockups 🙋‍♀️
I appreciate your tips so much 🙏 and I'm sure other sewists, both new and seasoned, can benefit from them too. I still need to do some verification with UA-cam but once that's done I will pin this comment so that it's easily accessible for anyone passing by the comment section :)

@@caddberrie If you want to practice your hand-sewing you could start with small projects. I strongly suggest using a thimble for all your handwork. It should fit the middle finger of your dominant hand. The size of the thimble will match your ring size (ie, mine is a size 8). You could also cut the tip of a leather glove - the thimble should just cover your first digit so you can't see the nail. Thimbles take a while to get used to, but it makes a huge difference to the quality of your hand-stitching.
I also recommend getting a pad or ball of pure beeswax (I found mine at the health food store). Cut the thread to the length you need - usually the span from your hand to your midsection, when holding your arm straight to the side. Then run the thread over the wax. It strengthens the thread and reduces the friction during a stitch.
_Some hand-project suggestions (can also be done with your machine):_
One I liked was a wrist pincushion (as long as you have a strap of some sort that fits your wrist or a clip-on bracelet... you attach two loops to the bottom of the cushion and then slide the bracelet through). That way you can have the flexibility to use the pincushion either on your wrist or use it on it's own.
You could also make your own pattern weights. You can use something like rice or beans to stuff them. They can be small, they can be large. Mine are the small pyramid shaped ones - there are tutorials galore for so many different kinds.
My favorite project was to make my own "housewife" / "housiff" / portable sewing kit. You can make it in whatever configuration you want (there are dozen of tutorials on YT). For example - the next one I'm going to make will have a few "pages" of felt for sewing needles, needle threaders, space for my snips, space for my thimble, small pincushion, thread, and a buttoned pocket to hold my pad of beeswax. A sewing kit makes traveling with your work so much easier. It's also a really useful thing to have in your carryon. And, for bonus points, you can use your leftover fabric to make them.
There's also making a soft-sided 'waste' thread cup. You make a longer end that will sit underneath the sewing machine - the 'cup' hangs off the edge of the table. It's nice to have a little waste basket to catch the threads and seam allowance trimmings you'll be creating while you're sitting at the machine.
If you want a quick machine project then you could make an aesthetic dust cover for your sewing machine.
Then there's things like aprons. And pressing hams and sleeve rolls. Basically? You can make your own sewing kit... go have fun.

Thank you so much for the detailed tips!! I've been meaning to learn hand-sewing as well (don't think i could avoid it even if i wanted to 😆) and now i have great pointers and beginner projects to start with!! The most appealing project to me right now is the pincushion and the 'cup' the catches all the thread bits and small pieces of fabric because i've been discarding everything onto the floor. I'll make my way through the projects, come back and update you on how it goes 💪Thank you again for dropping the tips and have a lovely week!

You are doing great! It is always a bit intimidating when you first start but so so worth it. One piece of advice that I learned forever ago and is now my most used piece of information: when you use a universal foot you can place the edge of the foot along the edge of the fabric to help you keep a straighter line. It really helps to have that visual guide. Bonus info; using the foot as a guide will always give you a 3/8 inch seem allowance or 9.5 mm (most universal feet are the same width). Always remember that sewing is supposed to fun! If you start getting frustrated don’t be afraid to take a break. I always choose to have a cup of tea and a cuddle with my dog before I try again. The learning process is long but extremely rewarding, good luck!

I started sewing when I was 7, so over 52 years. I have to admit sewing became a happy addiction. I’ve even worked for two popular fashion companies before they moved their factories outside the US, I loved it! My Aunt was my initial teacher but I spent two weeks with my Grandmother who sews everything under the sun. What I loved about my grandma was she hand sews everything and it always looks like it was sewn on a sewing machine. I have a manual machine, computerized, overlock and a embroidery machine but I still have a real love for hand sewing. I can do it almost anywhere when I know I’ll have a little down time while waiting (doctors office, road trips, errands, even when I’m just chilling at a local park.) I’ve even reupholstered my couch and sofa chairs. Nice thing is sewing is a true skill that will always be in demand. I’m so excited for your sewing adventures! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Oh wow thank you for sharing. It looks like your Aunt and Grandma taught you really early on, and to know that this skill that they helped you kickstart has brought so much value to your life, even decades later and still going strong, must be such a wonderful feeling. My grandma was a hand sewing champ as well (I remember it to be a big part of of her life while I was growing up). She could sew and knit, always taking garments apart and revamping them, and she could mend rips in fabric as though they never happened. I never did take the initiative to learn these skills from her before she passed, but now that I'm starting to learn how to sew, it kinda feels like I get to understand a bit more of her world :) Thank you for coming along on my journey 💫 and I hope you will continue to reap the fruits of your sewing skills, spread the inspiration, multiply the joy 🫶

This video fully convinced me to start sewing! So glad I found it! I’m always struggling with clothes, I’m 4’9 (142 cm) plus I got thick legs, 90% of jeans don’t fit me, they’re either too long, or fit too tight on my legs. I mostly wear shorts bc of how hard is it. 💖 I can crochet and knit, but for some reason sewing always look so hard and intimidating to me. You make it look fun, so I’ll give it a shot. Tysm!

Oh wow thanks for sharing! I think it's gonna be a game changer once you start being able to make clothes that fit you. @nmjerry ahh got it! Yes there are plenty of competing fashion brands in Vietnam and you can 100% start a fashion business of your own. And then whether you can survive whilst competing with the plethora of options already available/ cheap imports is a different story. Economically speaking, Vietnam has developed a lot since the 70s/80s and is very much a mixed economy now. If you've some combination of wits, guts, and money, you're free to start your own thing. No shortage of entrepreneurs and budding businesses here 😆
The reason it's hard to find clothes for me local to where i live (Hanoi) is because i just happen to be outside the size range for most fashion brands that produce for the Vietnamese demographic. I dont blame them though; it makes sense for businesses to cater towards the majority.
