One Another was one of the most interesting commentaries on gender I've seen on this platform because it wasn't like 'this is about gender roles, and those suck', which is the kind of gender related content we see most of the time, it was more about characters interacting with the concept of gender in a personal way with a narrative which I don't think I've ever seen! Idk, I loved it, basically.

I think the biggest strength of this film was its subtlety. It really struck me that it could have been so crude in terms of playing another gender. Instead, the acting and the script meant that you didn't necessarily notice until the second time through, which goes to show it kept well away from stereotypes or a dogmatic social/political viewpoint.
Also, I agree that this film deserves a proper sit-down watch. I think I did actually turn the lights out (i might even have had a candle too haha) and it was so worth it; I came out the other side feeling a slightly different person.

I said this in the movie's comments but I adore the fact that people can still do these big projects when the people that are rolling in the UA-cam money are the ones that really have to play the algorithm and would never dare to try something like this.

I always find it so interesting to see people who make films, either in front or behind the camera, chat about them and like honestly this didn't disappoint. I loved this video (and the film) so much and I'd love to see more lil films chats like this in the future!
Also lil q, if you see this ofc, Sammy how would you react to picking up a script someone else has written and directing it?? Like it seems like such a different process to having the image in your head as a writer vs reading it and going against the authorial intent.

I think I disagree with Sammy about watching on mobile. I watch most UA-cam content on my mobile rather than my computer - although that is mostly just so I can take my glasses off. But it doesn't take away from the experience, in fact, lying in bed with my phone in my hand and my glasses off makes the experience seem almost more personal. That might just be because I watched the first real thing on UA-cam that got me interested in film making (Project: Library) in my bed, in my pants, on my phone (or iPod, I can't quite remember)

    • @ICOEPR

It certainly makes for a more intimate screening environment. But I dunno, you want that music to swell. The sound design on full blast. Every pixel of detail. Maybe it's just me.

    • @googleit0
      @googleit0 7 років тому +2

hotscottrulz I totally agree with you! Watching it on my phone made the opening feel so personal. It hooked me in so quickly and kept me right there through it all. They were talking TO me, instead of AT me, which is what I feel like when I watch a monologue on the big screen.
I started to identify and pay close attention to the content of what they were saying. Of course you want the picture and music to add to the experience, but I'd fear on a larger level it would draw attention away from the message.

    • @hcoates76
      @hcoates76 7 років тому +5

hotscottrulz me too! I hardly ever watch UA-cam on a laptop/computer maybe because of convince? I think primarily I've adapted to the UA-cam app so when I go on to the website it's.. foreign almost and overall a less enjoyable experience. Sure the screen might be bigger but i personally can't be as comfortable and as engaged in something on a laptop than I am when snuggled up in bed with my phone propped against a pillow - for me this is the best viewing experience with the least distractions :)

One Another was such a breath of fresh air on gender and it was SO interesting to hear from the people behind it, and y'all talking about the script/character process of it. When Dan mentioned he was out shopping an image from a previous PSM of his where I remember we went costume shopping. Watching this video and already having major respect for you guys, it's great to hear what all went into the mental preparedness for it. And yesss Sammy It's great to how Rebecca came on as producer and then script editor and I think it's great that you wanted a female's perspective on it. Even when you texted your friends about their menstrual cycle, it's just nice to hear that research. Wonderful job guys, gonna go watch One Another for a third time now.

Went and watched the film. Really liked it. I love how the story was slowly built up and revealed through the two shots. Not just the through the dialogue, but through getting to know the two characters through their mannerisms, body language, the way they talked and even the set of their homes. We get a good 10+ min of straight up face time with each of them which is kinda... Intimate.
    Also great beginning, loved that

  • @diogoalmeidavisuals

I liked it even before I got it! My original interpretation was:
He lost his connection with his family when he came out as gay and now uses his career success as a coping mechanism.
And she was a lesbian that had gone through a mental breakdown without feeling the consequences of her actions and committed the murder of the girl from the phone. And after being caught, spent the rest of her life hiding her past from her new girlfriend.

I am so in love with talks like these that go behind the finished product, and I really hope both of you will do more in the future. I found Sammy's comment about non-climatic endings to be really interesting, since that's not something I see a lot off. Where does the desire to make those come from? I do love when people make content that makes me think, and which works in a smaller and larger context, and One Another was definitely that for me. It's also refreshing to hear a chat about growing your channel, which says to just make things that you and your peers would like and be proud of, because for some reason that side of it often gets lost. My last thought was on Sammy's closing comment "thank you for your intelligence" because, again, on youtube, that's often not valued in viewers, but it's something I personally value in the creators I watch/content, so it was nice to hear that reciprocated (this is of course a completely different conversation, but it just stood out to me). Well done on the film to both of you, and Dan, your acting in this is definitely something to be proud of :)

I studied Chicanx film (also known as Mexican-American film) and was taught that when you have an anti-climatic film ending or do not have a proper film ending that closes the story the intention is to make us think more in depth of the messages in the film. It may differ as Chicanx film is made as a weapon to convey a variety of messages about the characters or stories in the film to the viewer, whether they be Chicanx or any other background. I could be wrong as I am transposing the theory of one type of film onto another but this is the way that I took it in when Sammy said that.

Watching One Another ended up being one of the first short films that genuinely opened my eyes into figurative storytelling. Of course there's films that have a deeper allegorical meaning (most do) but it was the first that I had to watch a few times to really get and I really liked that aspect. The sheer time, effort, and research made it so unique and an obvious labor of love. It's got me considering taking the time to begin writing my own films, especially ones with deeper meaning and I love it.

One Another might be my favorite Sammy film, so far. The mix of a great script with each person's mannerisms just worked so well together to help the watcher figure out the meaning without just vomiting the answers in the first few minutes.

  • @XxDeadParrotxX
    @XxDeadParrotxX 7 років тому

As an aspiring writer and a person who enjoys storytelling in all its variations, I completely agree with Sammy about the conflicting ending being more memorable than the happy one. Which is why, in my opinion, stories about any sort of grief (including the kind of grief/loss experienced by the characters in One Another) are my favourites, because they don't necessarily have to end on a depressing note, but at the same time something has been lost by the characters and they cannot get it back. Regardless of the potential positives that come with all that, you as a viewer still feel the experience has both given you something and taken something away.

It was cool to hear sammy talk about how it was meant to be a film that make you think, because it definitely came across that way, i particularly loved that film didnt create an "a ha i figured it out," kind of moment it was just a sort of quiet realisation which worked really well with the tone of the film and the characters.

I know this probably fits better as a comment on the actual film but now I cant be bothered going back whoops.
I really like the way it made me think, I didn't read the comments or look at the description, I just went in blind and let the film tell it's story without any help. This is one of my favourite ways to watch things because in my opinion it tells the truth of the content and allows me to form my own feelings and ideas without having someone else's floating around in my head.
About 5 minutes in I stared to understand the plot and it became clear to me what had happened and that made me so interested in the story. I felt like I wanted to know the whole ordeal and for me getting to that level of nosy is when I know I've been hooked.
The main thing I noticed though is as a cis female I couldn't identify with Emma's character, but I don't mean that as a bad thing. The whole thing felt like a mansplain of the female experience and this speaks credit to her acting, and to Sammy's writing. It felt distant from my own, and other women I knows' lives and it really showed to me that this was someone who wasn't meant to be in that body, who wasn't meant to be experiencing those things. The same can be said for Dan's character because I could identify with them, there was something that I could recognise from in me and from women I know.
It really was a thought provoking film and I enjoyed that the audience was given the opportunity to think, that it wasn't just handed to us.

I wish more movies did their behind the scenes like this. No real audience. No cliche questions from people who don't know what they're talking about. Just people involved in the film chatting about what they found interesting in the process. It's why I love a good commentary (LOTR is 10/10) and why bad commentaries are so disappointing.
It's a shame that you and I are separated by quite a disconnected medium; I think we'd have so much to talk about. But then again, without this medium, I'd never would've known who you were at all. So cheers to UA-cam.

Loved this! I especially connect with what you guys said about not handing the audience all the answers. That was one of my absolute favorite things about One Another, that the audience had to figure out what happened not their own. I got it the first time but it took me a while. I made a film with my friend a few months ago and we used that tactic as well. We wanted a story where the audience would draw their own conclusions. While ours was more up for interpretation than having a concrete answer for what happened, I still relate heavily to not wanting to hand the audience an obvious story. Films that make you really think are the best.

One Another may be my favourite short film. It was so well executed. I loved that there were only two locations and neither character moved from their seat, but you could still see so much about them just in their posture. I also loved that I had to figure out what happened as an audience member. I love it when I can discover the story without having the facts shoved in my face.
Sammy, you have such a strong understanding of the medium and the tricks of storytelling, it shows clearly in your work. I think that your focus on making content that you like and that your peers will like is awesome. It's very easy to get distracted by impressing the audience and losing track of why any of us make film in the first place.
Dan, you did a phenomenal job with your body language and quality of speech. I could tell that your character was incredibly uncomfortable in their skin but trying to make the most of the situation. It's cool that you yourself went through a bit of a journey as you found this character. I look forward to seeing you in even more interesting and challenging roles in the future!

I especially enjoyed how we slowing started to realize that there was a gender switch. You do think 'oh there is something a bit off with this character' and then it suddenly dawns on you. The beginning monologue about periods really drew you into the story and you want to keep watching to find out what it's all about. There is so much to say!! Thank you for this video as it is so interesting to find out about the behind the scenes and the thought process behind it. Really well done Dan on your acting!

i loved everything about this. one another is easily one of my favourite short films and id even go as far as to say that it's up there with "swiss army man" (not a short film, but fucking amazing, so you get my point.) as i said before, the approach to the topic was very original, and the blatant period chat was perfect (and SO necessary). all in all i love this film sooo much and everyone who worked on it, especially you two.
    love you lots,

You'll be happy to know that I watched One Another in pretty much the exact setting you intended for it. In the evening, relaxed, sat in the dark (which I've only just realised as I've been binge watching your videos (thanks by the way)) and on my nice big tv. It was great

(I'm studying Creative media at college and am finding it absolutely fascinating!) Thank you for both inspiring me to continue my filmmaking path (even though my dad disagrees that it's a worthwhile course) I'm so excited to create my own 'masterpieces'.

The part about seeing the little UA-cam time bar was interesting because I consciously checked it multiple times during the film, but totally lost track of time during this video. This might be because I didn't understand One Another the first time round and I'm just impatient. Watching you two discuss it casually on a sofa was more engaging to me personally.
That being said, I liked the film very much and watching this behind-the-scenes explanatory video was a real treat. Thanks Sammy and Dan!

Thirdly when you spoke about story lines that occur like years after the 'event', I think that those are enjoyable/stay with you is because of the way it makes you view and analysis society and culture and your place within it.

I absolutely enjoy the journey that One another bring me on. I adore movies that make you think about what the filmmakers are trying to tell you. The first time I watch it, I question myself about my ability to understand the english langage. Th second time I watched it, I went: OHH, I get it. I love the subtlety of it and it's a really great take on gender. Sammy, you've got mad skills and Dan, brillant performance. Thank you. Also, it was great to hear your analysis of the production.

I always make a point of trying to re-create a sort of 'cinema space' when I watch short films by creators I like, maybe it's just me as a filmmaker but it makes such a difference to actually put technology away and just focus on the film itself, and I think One Another definitely deserves that 100% attention since it's such a clever film. I love films that make the audience figure things out instead of making everything super obvious, kinda feels like the filmmaker respects their audience more if they don't dumb things down. Loved the film so much!

oooo I'm so glad that you guys brought up how you view a film. I'm so glad I was in a pretentious mood/surrounding the first time I watched One Another because it made me appreciate and understand it. In regards to writing differently for UA-cam/ for a certain medium, I think that it's easy to get ¿lost¿ and start creating things for the views and not for the love of creating. I loved One Another and I can't wait for more

this was really, really interesting because when i saw the film i got the premise almost immediately, but couldn't put my finger on why? not because of any real intelligence, I just... read a lot of fanfiction. body swap stories are so very distinctive and it's fascinating to hear about the detail that went into the presentation because it's really a testament to the amount of skill and care that went into the film, that it would visually set off all these little genre alarm bells yet still blend so seamlessly into its medium. and that's the lovely thing about productions like these? that absolutely everyone is creatively invested in the final product. One Another was just the perfect balance of sincerity and skill and production value, 18/10, A+.

The film was great, first of all. It was definitely a great, deep dive into gender in a way I feel is rarely done, and as a theater person I really did love the monologue-y style of it. Also Dan and Emma were fantastic! Second, I love hearing the bts of the process and just exactly was going on as well as realizing all the little details that made it work (Emma's open body language vs. Dan's closed body language, the mug as an anchor, etc) I will definitely have to watch it again!! Y'all are great :)

Not meaning to be over the top with flattery here, but One Another was quite possibly the best short film I've seen. I remember watching it while I was at uni (procrastination for study yay!) and I just fell in love with it instantly. It challenged me to analyse the situation and figure out what the hell was going on. I'm so so so glad that we got to watch this commentary and to hear your own thoughts on it (both of you).
I've been left feeling so inspired, even though I don't plan to have a future in film making or anything very similar to it. Just the thought provoking nature of the movie invoked that much emotion inside me.
Greatly looking forward to consuming more of Sammy's projects in the future (especially Playground cause that shit look mighty fine) and hopefully will see Dan's beautiful presence in more projects soon.
Much love to you both x

I honestly think One Another is one of the best things I have seen on UA-cam full stop. I slowly realised the premise of the film around 5 minutes in and really enjoyed going back and appreciating the subtlety and detail put in to the script, the acting and the costume. Fundamentally I think it's the writing that really sets this film apart from most of the other short films I've seen on this platform - it takes a lot of skill to make 26 minutes of monologue engaging right to the finish. The discussion of gender also struck a personal chord with me and I thought it was very elegantly handled (Dan your acting as a woman was really spot on, I could tell that you'd really done your research).
Personally I love films and television programmes that work within constraints (probably connected with my love of theatre) such as only using monologues as you chose to do (also love a good single-location episode such as the pilot for Inside No 9 or Twelve Angry Men). Lars Von Trier is a big advocate for 'creative constraint' and I think it often leads to really high quality work. Would love to see you both challenge yourselves by setting different constraints in future films - it really paid off here and I think it could lead to some really interesting stuff!
In summary this was fan-bloody-tastic - am thoroughly impressed and can't wait to see more from all of you!

I love hearing what went on behind the scenes so this was a very interesting watch! It made me remember when One Another came out - I was on my way to a house party, and when I returned home in the early hours of morning I was conflicted on whether to watch it right then or leave it till after my precious rest. I decided to start watching and then hey, if I fell asleep I could always just finish it when I woke up. I really wasn't expecting to get through it. But the film grabbed my attention within the first few lines and I remained completely engaged for the entirety of it. The monologues were beautifully personal and they were written and acted so naturally; who would have thought a body swap would be the perfect vehicle to comment on gender roles? It really stuck with me afterwards, the first thing I did the next day when I woke up was watch it again. So different to anything you've done before Sammy. A really special one.
