I know my reply is 9 years toooo late, but it's a reasonable question, so here goes:- To give better weight distribution. In this configuration it is called "mid engine", where the engine is between the front and rear wheels, whereas, in the original VW Beetle, it is referred to as rear engine, where the engine is behind the rear wheels. One of the characteristics of the VW gearbox (aka transaxle) is that it can be built-up with the differential crown wheel on either side of it's pinion, so as when used in this configuration, you don't end- up with one forward gear, and four reverse!
