There’s so much potential here, but some things to work on:
Sort out the sound. It’s extremely boxy. Needs a good compressor and dx frequency boost to clear it up. Personally I think the lav is too far into his throat as well, and you can remove the fluffy indoors.
Framing: your framing on his interview doesn’t tell enough of a story. As a documentary filmmaker myself, I’ll NEVER use a centre weighted frame. It’s flat. Rather shove him right onto the edge of the frame looking into it wall of the frame, that makes the interview feel more intense.
Get two cameras for the close up and wide, and ensure that there’s at least 30 degrees of difference between the 2 cams, it’ll make it cut better (a hard side profile is way more dramatic and fitting than a flat front on shot). For a discussion like this, even 1 static main cam, and a 2nd cam floating can look good. The soft shake of the 2nd cam will increase tension.
Lastly, ask the interviewee to answer questions as if it’s a grade 1 comprehension test. You ask, what did you have for breakfast, they answer with “for breakfast I had…”. This will stop the need for you to put your own voice into the edit which breaks the flow of the edit, and it stops you from using “down time frames” which is where the interviewee often becomes sloppy for a second.
Overall decent interview, but a lot to do that will send it over the edge! 🫡 I look forward to seeing more.
