- My Dad gave me his old, broken John Deere hydro 185. No start, no spark. Can I get it running? More importantly, can I keep my kid interested in wrenching together long to see it through?

I can testify that your son will recall this time(and many others) with you many years(dare I say decades) from now. I've got 70 staring me in the face and my Dad passed when I was 10 , yet I still remember the times he had me helping him with projects to this day....and wishing there had been more. Hoping you two have many, many projects together!
Start them young. He is learning well. Looks to be very interested. His input during the repair is priceless. Lots of fun. Best time I have working on these units is when my grandson helps out. Say hi to your helper.

Taking out the carb for a quick cleanup would have been the final step to make the repair complete imho. Never the less, great explanation to the future mechanic who has half your dna.

I have a John Deere 185. I had a no spark no start problem. It was the $100.00 plus igniter part from John Deere dealer. Cause of the igniter failure was JUMP STARTING the tractor. Only attempt starting this model of tractor with a fully charged battery.
Tengo un tractor con este problema un Jhon ddere 185, tiene el mismo problema de que no arranca, muy buen video.
Always connect to the positive terminal first if you can help it. From starter motor, cdi, volt regulator, ignition coil, spark plug, even loose wire connection can be the problem

That model will have problems with fuel pumps, filters, etc. I've owned and worked on several.good luck.
have you consideres paving the road that leads to the shed ?
Just picked up a 185 hydro myself runs good and everything but can’t seem to get the fuel light to go off any ideas
