Heifetz is by far the greatest violinist ever. The extent of his technical brilliance can only be fully understood by other violinists. All of his interpretations are so filled with flare and virtuosity. Everyone else is only left to gaze in awe at his greatness.
Most elite violonist slows down some passages but heifezt tempo and playing at speed is marvelous. It seems to easy, everything is flawless. He would have gave a run to Paganini for sure
This performance was from a film titled "They Shall Have Music." Whether he is the premier interpreter of this song is completely unimportant and commenters who gripe about UA-cam posts are destroying the desire of young people to try their hand at sharing music in the view of others. Who wants to play and have some snob criticize your best effort? SHAME ON YOU CRITICS! What is important is that children and students be shown classical music, and we should celebrate when people PLAY!
Not true, he couldn't do staccato until a certain age and had to fight for it and practise until he could do it, you can read this in his interviews...
The story of this master piece is here : ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigora%C8%99_Dinicu And the original, played by Dinicu himself is here: ua-cam.com/video/hr_ZJeKhMaA/v-deo.html
One other guy that had a special staccato was none other than Eugene Fordor !!! He was, as we know, a pupil of Jascha Heifetz. However, staccato legato is one of those bowing strokes that you either have it or you don’t, and Eugene certainly had plenty of, like Mr Heifetz. At that time, Heifetz attended a Fordor’s concert and much to his surprise, Mr Heifetz found Fordor was wearing his hair long, something that Mr Heifetz did not approve. Mr Heifetz surmised that Eugene must have hid it underneath a wig that he wore to class. Such was the tricky Fordor, a true magician all around. Well, suffice it to say, rumors had it that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back & Mr Heifetz severed the teacher - pupil relationship at that point!!! Mr Heifetz was sure a stiff disciplinarian !!! That he was !!!
Did he, though, consider the possibility that Fordor wore a long wig to the concert... also seems a bit silly to reject a violin student over hair. Did Heifetz ever see a picture of Paganini?
the way u play violin is the way u only can play violin. steal from Hefeitz but play on and know that the music in u is joy to the world if you love what u do and do it your best.
Heifetz is definately distinguished in many aspects. Many of his performer's qualities are almost fanatically praised by his fans, with many exaggerations. However, one little thing is without dispute: he had the most convincing up and down bow staccato of all musicians and recordings I heard. He even lowers the speed so much that every note is perfectly "consumed" by listeners. I prefer many other musicians more then him in many other pieces, but have to admit he presents a high class of his own.
hora staccato is the composition and interpretation of the romanian composer Grigoreas Dinicu and inspired from the romanian folclor songs.I dont think it's fair that in the presentation , is no mention of the actual composer of the piece. The Heifetz guy is only an interpreter.WATCH HORA STACCATO HERE Grigoras Dinicu - Hora Staccato BEUTIFUL
Wtf nobody cares. How can u disrespect him so much by saying 'the heifetz guy'? Are u completely stupid? And where do u see a presentation? Its a video. Stop saying useless and stupid things
Good, Now go listen to 'Grigoras Dinicu Hora Staccato' here on you tube, the author of the piece and tell me who plays it better. Heifetz said himself that Dinicu was the greatest violinist he has ever heard. Trivia - Dinicu was rejected by the Vienna Conservatoir when he applied on the grounds that he was a 'gypsy'. Political corecteness did not even exist back then I guess... go figure :-)
Interpreted by not by as in composed. He didn’t compose this piece, this is a typical Romanian Folklore. Also, in 3 years a worldwide pandemic will come by surprise.
I'm not a violinist so excuse my ignorance but how does he achieve the staccato effect on the lower strings at 0:21. The bow movement looks slow and smooth but the effect is a fast staccato?
Locked elbow, upper arm. The rest is done by the bow's bouncing. The secret on the down bow is to push the bow into the string, so you have to rotate it backwards.
Yeah that's insane. You hear staccato but you see him moving the bow like there's nothing. To a pleb like me it simply does not compute. Heifetz really is something else.
Look don't say I bashed Heifetz because he was one of the greatest artists to walk the face of the earth along with Horowitz, Milstein etc. You don't obviously know much about bow techniques if you've never seen that kind of control. Eugene Fodor had an excellent down bow staccato, there are even others with such control that they can play twice the amount of notes on a down bow staccato let alone an upbow staccato. Michael Rabin had a virtuosic ability not many violinists had. I would say that since many regard his recording of the Paganini caprices at the age of 17 to be the standard to how others are compared that Mr. Rabin was one of the greats as well. Now go google the technique of staccato and learn something. One bow technique does not an artist make. You think Perlman is not one of the greats? He admittedly lacks a great staccato but has one of the greatest sounds along with Zukerman. So LISTEN and learn before you say someone bashed anyone. Funny a brass player commenting about violin techniques, or did you feel the need to make me an example about something you clearly have no real knowledge of? Gotta love UA-cam. Why don't you look up Alex Shonert if you want to see amazing bow control. Yeah he has a great staccato but does that make him one of the world's leading violinists? No it just makes him very good at a specific technique.
certainly the greatest fiddler in history, maybe after Paganini, but he didn't have the greatest staccato. ironic, since he's the one that made this piece popular. his staccato is a bit sticky, doesn't have that nice clear machine gun "pop", and could be faster too.
After one of his concerts a lady gushed "I'd give my life to play like you." Heifetz replied simply, "I did."
Malcolm Dale i dont understand , did he meant that he gave his life for violin?
Oh i see, thanks.
cwldoc...........and only a true genius would retort such as that!! Incredible!! HE....!!!
Wow. That makes a lot of sense.
I heard it before about Kreisler
You will never hear a another violinist like HEIFETZ!!!
Jascha Heifetz. After all these years: I still cannot believe what I hear and what I see. You are the God of violin playing.
Yes he is
Yes he was*
Well he was known as God’s fiddler
Then what about Paganini, Sarasate and Ernst? Jascha is one of my favorites but you are tripping if you think he is the best ever.
Moronic comment
I am a great collector of Jascha Heifetz ,I got in my collection most of his Cds and Dvds that i Enjoy alot
I grew up listening to Heifetz, and still have my dad's 78 rpm records. Hora Staccato was one of my dad's favorites.
I have all his recordings. I grew up listening to Heifetz.
Same here!
We don't access to Original CD /DVD labels Here in Iran, unfortunately!
Thanks UA-cam and Classical Music lovers to share the pure joy.
Heifetz is by far the greatest violinist ever. The extent of his technical brilliance can only be fully understood by other violinists. All of his interpretations are so filled with flare and virtuosity. Everyone else is only left to gaze in awe at his greatness.
I agree, but he thought the author of this piece was the greatest violinist he ever heard. Guess who it was?
Attilio Rizzo Jr. Its a popular gypsy tune that he wrote for him self
Attilio Rizzo Jr. Grigoras Dinicu.
Ever heard of Paganini
But don't forget about oistrakh.
Most elite violonist slows down some passages but heifezt tempo and playing at speed is marvelous. It seems to easy, everything is flawless. He would have gave a run to Paganini for sure
Even a great violonist like Heifetz couldn't resist the beauty of the Romanian folklore, great job maestro!
iconoclast I would like it to be. But I do not hear it enough in the concert halls, unfortunately.
And it is not folklore. It was written by Grigoraș Dinicu. Inspired from the Romanian folkore.
The pianist is Emanuel Bay, who was Heifetz's accompanist from about 1935 until 1951.
Gracias por el dato!
One of the great wonders of the world, good old Jascha Heifetz. I could watch this video thousands of times, and never get bored!
And do not refer to Mr. Heifetz as 'good old'........!! Totally disrespectful..!!
The 25 or so people that gave this man thumbs down ,can't even tell you what kind of an instrument this man is playing ,so what do we expect !!!!
Looks like a viola.
No it’s a clarinet
Small brains

It is a so hard violin technique up and down bow staccato. in the case, a very well done down bow staccato
Locked elbow, upper arm. The rest is done by the bow's bouncing. The secret on the down bow is to push the bow into the string, so you have to rotate it backwards.

Foxtrot Felix bro remember his theme song
Such a great afroamerican artist!
As awesome as Heifetz as his Hora Staccato doesn't come close to Michael Rabin's.
Are you serious?
georgesandchopin Totally serious, just listen to it and hear for yourself
Heifetz was always about his unique tone, than his virtuosity
Wha-a-a??? That unique tone results from being the very epitome of a violin virtuoso!
