  • It seems like the cyberpunk genre is steadily losing popularity so I thought I'd try and get some life back into it. The only speedrun related thing Snatcher ever had was Cody Miller's 2008 run: archive.org/de...
He states his time is 3:22:13 but I can't get that time at all. The only logical timing for this game is pressing start on the "Joypad Only" screen and ending on skipping the last dialogue box of Gillian talking about being a second lieutenant. With that timing I make his run 3:23:41.
The route was generally okay but I made some improvements. I'm pretty sure they must have reused some of the same checking code that they do in Policenauts for progression because my "spam one command" trick works for various areas.
    1. Outside factory. Can just spam one option instead of doing them all.
    2. Alice back yard.
    3. Alton Plaza. We spam Investigate then Area because it has the less beginning text of any option. Talking like 1.5 seconds saved but every little counts.
    4. Forgot when calling Napoleon for the first time you should also ring Plato's Cavern and probably Jamie to save going later as it would save 2 full menu trips on the videophone. Didn't test this though.
    5. We can spam the door after we kill the girl Snatcher.
    6. Spam again once inside Freddy's apartment.
    7. Entering Oleen Hospital has been improved to require fewer dialog.
    8. When searching for Katrina at her house, Cody did extra calls that you don't need to do. Simply revisiting the Study will trigger the window scene.
    9. Alton Plaza can also be abused with trigger spam. This saves lots of time.
    10. In the sewer you can spam one command to progress but while being tired I kinda missed this in the run.
    11. You do not have to ask Mika about the Kyoto Summit.
    12. You don't have to go to the Hallway when looking for Cunningham.
So yeah just by mashing every dialogue on near enough first frame each time and slightly faster options, TAS managed to save about half an hour. I honestly don't think anyone thought sub 3 hours was possible before this. Pretty sure knowing what I do now and some minor improvements I could potentially get the time down to a low 2:53 but any lower would require some real work.
If you are curious, this run was done with BizHawk and then resized using the inbuilt A/V capture method in the MP4 container at 1440x1080. I chose this to keep the 4:3 aspect ratio that the game originally had while still allowing 1080p viewing. If anyone wants to make a better encode in higher quality please message me and I can give you the bk2 file.
