I've always said this but if I ever started a band, I would aspire to have the spirit of this band. It just looks like such a good time, three best friends doing what they love. So real, so pure.
Yep, seen them about 15 times, in all sorts of venues, and it always feels like you’re sitting in on a rehearsal in their garage, in the best possible sense.
How did I miss this for decades!? TLDR: I honestly thought the closest thing to Mr Show/Yo La Tengo crossover in my life would be the month I discovered the two simultaneously, during a dismal Portland February... I didn't expect a Yo La Tengo/Mr. Show crossover. Ever. What's weirder is the way it takes me back to a specific time in college... My best friend/roommate introduced me to Mr. Show and we were staying up late to watch it together. No HBO, no cable, just a collection of VHS tapes filled with stuff my friend recorded when she'd been home (including every episode of Mr. Show). About a week before we started watching Mr Show I'd been walking back to our apartment, completely exhausted, after spending hours in the library. While cutting through the courtyard I heard "Green Arrow" playing through the windows of the campus coffee shop. Despite being desperate to get home and sleep, I stopped in my tacks, stood listening in the dark, and when the song ended I made a beeline to the shop and asked the student-barista what they were playing... Next morning I skipped a lecture, took the bus to Jackpot Records on Hawthorne, and bought Yo La Tengo's _I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One_ (worth it). Over the next month I listened to that album constantly while studying/working. When I needed a break from trying to learn Russian (never happened) or writing one of whatever three essays were due that week, I'd put on Mr. Show. For a time, listening to Yo La Tengo or watching Mr Show were two things I could consistently count on if I needed to relax or lift my spirits... and I desperately needed both. February in Portland, OR was uniquely and deeply depressing: the fourth month *straight* of nothing but grey skies and shitty cold rain, punctuated by the occasional awful freezing rain/ice storm. Thank the gods for March, when life began to return and blossom all over the city. Anyway, if you read this far: sorry for rambling about some crappy time in my life that occurred 20+ years ago. I know a lot of people say nostalgia is overrated (and I tend to agree), but I think a little nostalgia once in a while is okay, especially when it's about things that kept you sane when life wasn't necessarily great... and this video captures that flavor of nostalgia _perfectly_ . Oh, and if you're in Portland right now? I'm so sorry. Remember: spring is around the corner.
One of the great things about Yo La Tengo is just how damn likeable Ira, Georgia, and James are. I love watching this video. And I love this band so much.
In 1997, with grunge on the decline and boy bands on the horizon, the direction I wanted for rock music was "Beach Boys melodies with insane amounts of shoegaze feedback and distortion." This song fulfilled that dream.
This is still one of the most brilliant music videos ever, all these "RocknRoll" stereotypes are really stupid after all, it's funny, real, and the music is great too
Can you guys also post the other version. I like them both but watched the non directors cut more and wanna see that one again. also good as a comparison.
I just read about this band wearing drag in Tennessee last night to protest the bill restricting drag performance and then found this GOLD. *bows down. v cool people. Huge fan.
Saw them play with Sylvan Esso last week in Durham. It was awesome! Yo La Tengo is the reason I went. Was hoping to hear this song live! Ah well... Next time?
For me, this video was a watershed moment, the point where the trajectories of the two great promising forces of post-Reagan proto-Trump America (indie rock and indie comedy) intersected and exploded into a Perfect Work of Art. It should have saved us! It would have saved us if only if only
Around the same time I was seeing Matt Besser wearing a Yo La Tengo shirt on Upright Citizens Brigade show. I never knew when and where this video was debuted.
can you guys also post the none directors cut? I saw that one so many times and this one is good but I like the version I saw. also wish you guys would do the “ come on pretty mamma I wanna dance w you all night oing part “ live.
Better Call Saul (Bob Odenkirk) is the guy in the Kiss makeup and the silent exec on the left! Comedian David Cross is the other silent exec and pink haired rock teacher. (Yes, it’s been referenced, but just to make it obvious for all).
Whatever you want from me, whatever you want I'll do Try to squeeze a drop of blood from a sugarcube Try to be more assured, try to be more right there Try to be less uptight, try to be more aware Whatever you want from me, is what I want to do for you Sweeter than a drop of blood from a sugarcube And though I like to act the part of being tough I crumble like a sugarcube for you Whatever you want from me, whatever you want I'll do and I will try whatever you want from me whatever you want I'll do try to squeeze a drop of blood squeeze a drop of blood from a sugarcube
This might be the greatest music video of all time.

Sugarcube was my favourite music video.
Sugarcube (Director's Cut) is my favourite music video.
Also, guys - edit the description, the video didn't _just_ star the Mr. Show boys. ❤

In 1997, with grunge on the decline and boy bands on the horizon, the direction I wanted for rock music was "Beach Boys melodies with insane amounts of shoegaze feedback and distortion." This song fulfilled that dream.

The best music in my life
Bob Odenkirk, não acredito
this was the song (and the video) that got me into yo la tengo

Could have sworn after David Cross asks Ira about Jeff Beck bowing guitars, Ira responds "probably not"

where's the original video? can't find it anywhere anymore
Happy anniversary!
How come i never saw this video before!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Who is the David Coverdale looking rocker dude at about 2:51?
Good timing for myself I'd say. Rock school sounds rad.
did I miss it or this version does not have the reading from the rush album?
Saul Goodman as Yo La Tengo's lawyer

Too bad the discussion video the band posted, Bob Odenkirk was not even in the discussion, reason: he has now become superfamous.
Okay, I wasn't expecting to see Saul Goodman in this video ...
🤣👌
Saul Goodman was their lawyer.

Saul gone
They just talk over the entire song 🤣
Sweet Jesus. It’s like I’m in colelge
No kidding. The Mr Show/Yo La Tengo combo took me right back to college.
Wish it was the no dialogue version
TIL: Jeff Airplane yes, Black Flag no, Rush yes, Velvet Underground no, trip-hop maybe
So after rock school nothing's changed in their video. It doesn't make sense.
:)
Not the black flag album being dropped😂
I kinda like the original one better.
This is so loud
