    In this video, I try to do more than just show you the notes and rhythms. I'll give you some musical advice on how to actually be able to play songs like this.
    Starting slow, being comfortable with triplet subdivisions, and using a metronome are all requisites to playing this well. If this is your first slap tune, it may take you a long while to get it up to speed with any accuracy. Be patient and don't let yourself get sloppy out of laziness or frustration.
    This video will also demystify why the intro sounds so weird when the drums come in! (4:3 polyrhythms, bro)
    Be patient with your slap technique! And if you're just starting, Higher Ground isn't really a great "beginner" song, it's too fast and complicated. You can get started with the basics of slap more slowly in my Beginner to Badass course - www.bassbuzz.com/lessons/begi...

    Thanks, man. Your videos are fantastic. Once you get the tempo and the main riff ingrained then the hardest part of the song is to get that turnaround at A timed just right....That it is still tricking me. I can kinda do it with the actual song, but it gets harder with the metronome, I still falter. I thought maybe the time signature actually changed for like 2 bars or something, but...nope, just me.

    What are the settings on your amp and effects if any? I've been having a really hard time getting a good slap/pop sound that I'm happy with.

    • @joshfossgreen
      @joshfossgreen  7 років тому

      No effects, generally my settings are pretty neutral on the bass and minimal EQ/compression in Logic (don't usually use an amp when recording these videos). Sometimes I roll toward my neck pickup to get more of a Jazz bassy growl that Flea sometimes has.
      Make sure your strings aren't too old and your action isn't too high, those are two obvious things I would check if you're having slap issues.

    • @boechsner
      @boechsner 7 років тому

      sorry i should've been more clear. I meant the internal settings on the mobius. Was that just a preset or did you customize it? Great playing! I'm mostly a guitar player, but I want to work and doing slap bass for my recordings.
    I have an issue with getting such fast consecutive downstroke thumb slaps. I know a solution is often to do two-directional thumb slaps (basically slap and then a pop on the way back), but a bass line I wrote has a similar pattern where after two thumb slaps there's an octave pop. Doing the downstroke-upstroke double slap makes popping a higher string right after quite problematic.
    So, I need to be able to pull off slap sequences as demonstrated here, but I don't see my hand moving anywhere quickly enough even if I'm just rotating my wrist in the air back and forth. Do you have any solution? I heard someone else say you should use the "jump" provided by the previous slap, but I don't feel my hand gets away from the string on its own - I need to consciously rotate away and then rotate it back onto the string to play another slap.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @joshfossgreen
      @joshfossgreen  6 років тому

      You shouldn't be cringing. Using one-finger-per-fret when you don't need it is a waste of energy. If you watch me (or most pro bassists) play long enough, you'll see me switch between fingering approaches based on context and conservation of energy/effort.

    • @bowdown81

    HELP PLEASE !!!
    First of all, great video and great explanations !
    But I want to ask something : I am a bass player and this song is a mythic song for me, it' the one that made me want to play the bass. For 3 years now, I have been trying to play this song but I can't have the same sound as the one in your COVER video. Now I can play this song without any real problem for the technique, but it's so frustrating because I have been trying a lot of things to improve the quality of sound (I changed the bass 2 times, I tried to play on other amps, I had my bass tuned and set by professionals, etc). According to the professionals who set my bass, my sound is really normal and there is nothing strange, but it's still frustrating for me because when doing slap or just when playing with fingers on the lowest string, I have SO LOUD metal noises I don't know how to remove (like PLOK and BZZ). BUT I understood more and more that it's normal, and when I saw your tutorial video (after the explanations), I realised that actually you also have what I call the metal "dirty" sounds, particularly when playing on the lowest string (the first note you play at 9:20 is a very good example). So I'm now SURE that it's normal ! You video is then perfect for me because you might be the perfect person to explain to me how you managed to remove that, since the sound in your cover is perfect (so I supposed you changed something ?).
    I used to think that these "parasite sounds" were normal when playing unplugged, and that the volume of the amp would "hide" it but no. The amp also amplifies it. And anyway, in your tutorial video, you're also playing with an amp, don't you ?
    I also used to think that it was normal to hear these "parasite sounds" when we play with an amp but "alone", without any back track "hiding" it, but no, since the song (and your cover) begins with bass only, but there are no parasite sounds.
    Also, I used to think that the secret was to record for example directly on a sound card, to add post-video treatment, but I also saw covers in which people speak (during the song), which proves it is recorded with a basic camera.
    Finally, I thought about using a compressor pedal but don't understand how it could hide this metallic sounds since it sounds mechanical to me.
    I would be DELIGHTED if you (or anyone else) could explain to me how to solve this 3 years long MYSTERY and PAIN.
    Thanks a lot in advance ! (and sorry for the mistakes in English !).
    PS : I play on a Squier Modified Jazz Bass (but had the same problem playing on more expensive basses).

      Hello there,

    • @damusic2me
      @damusic2me 2 роки тому

      the first note at hjte 9:20 mark, has some fret 'rattle' In Josh's case: i think it's caused by uneven fret-wear, (the low G is worn down more then the G#, which is why you hear it rattle against it) which means it's time to level and crown the frets again, or even refret the bass. This is normal wear and tear when you play a lot on your instrument, but leave it to a professional to fix if you're not familiar with it.
      If You experience this as well as a 'beginner', practise the placement of your fingers first: they should be right behind the frets, and if you hit a single note, You should be able to do this, without rattle. If there are notes which can't be done clean, then your strings could be set too low, or your neck is not straight. Get your instrument to a professional, and let them fix it. There are plenty of youtube videos showing you how to correct this, but it still is an art, and if you're not comfortable doing this, let a pro do it. they charge you 40,- 50,- maybe add a new set of strings to that, and your instrument plays as new

      Josh Fossgreen What do you suggest? I can slap and pop pretty fast on the A and G strings but I can't on the E and D because (I'm sure you know) the G string is in the way of my popping finger.

  • @markbass354
    @markbass354 9 років тому

    Josh you explained this riff really well . I wanted to ask you why is it my E string vibrates making unnecessary noise when slapping and no one I see online has this problem. I know how to palm mute , finger tip or thumb mute the E string when slapping the A string and all that but this seems excessive. Could it be the bridge of my bass not being sturdy enough , its the basic bridge where I can separate the saddles so they don't touch one another.
    I've tried adjusting the truss rod because my bass was bowed a bit , adjusted the action , tried new strings , a sponge under the strings that dries and does no good plus a folded up paper towel to a nice neat little square under the strings by the bridge that helps some if I make it the right thickness. Its awful frustrating BUT I don't dare get angry because playing bass is my passion so I just move on to the next riff.
    Does anyone else watching this have a bass with a noisy E string tremble disease ?

    • @computerscientist5953
      @computerscientist5953 8 років тому

      +Mark S B. no excessive, I have the same thing on both of my basses. You accidentally touch E string when you slap A, so I just palm mute all other strings while slapping. I've been playing like this for 3 years, no problems at all
