In this video, I try to do more than just show you the notes and rhythms. I'll give you some musical advice on how to actually be able to play songs like this.
Starting slow, being comfortable with triplet subdivisions, and using a metronome are all requisites to playing this well. If this is your first slap tune, it may take you a long while to get it up to speed with any accuracy. Be patient and don't let yourself get sloppy out of laziness or frustration.
This video will also demystify why the intro sounds so weird when the drums come in! (4:3 polyrhythms, bro)
Be patient with your slap technique! And if you're just starting, Higher Ground isn't really a great "beginner" song, it's too fast and complicated. You can get started with the basics of slap more slowly in my Beginner to Badass course - www.bassbuzz.c...
10:39 "Just wiggle around" That's my main bass technic and basically the extent of my musical theory knowlage so that should come natural
Ha
I didn’t know badger played bass
If you watched the bonus minisodes from breaking bad badger sings and plays bass
Skinny Pete edits it
Anti-Time yeah. He pawned his bass early on in his addiction. But what people don’t know is Badger wound up calling a vacuum cleaner salesman, got a new life, and picked up a bass again...
@@lapinus what a dumb call lmao, Anti-Time is obviously not a true fan

This is the best lesson of this song on the net.Period!
Thanks Jon!
Best bass teacher I’ve found on YT so far! Thank you!
GREAT lesson Josh!!! Thanks for explaining the timing and the "feel".
you legend one of my favorite youtuber ever. keep uploading videos I really enjoy them.
I've tried learning this tune a handful of times, but I've never had much success until I came across your video. Fantastic find! Thank you for putting this together. With the musical notation as well as intermittent tutorials on intricate parts of the song, learning it was a breeze.
dong a duh de de de de de duh lol good job
Almost any musician is going to make noises like that to emulate an instrument.
Thanks, man. Your videos are fantastic. Once you get the tempo and the main riff ingrained then the hardest part of the song is to get that turnaround at A timed just right....That it is still tricking me. I can kinda do it with the actual song, but it gets harder with the metronome, I still falter. I thought maybe the time signature actually changed for like 2 bars or something, but...nope, just me.
Hey josh, just want to say thanks for the vid and pdf... i know there are a lot of tutorials for this song, but i like the way you break things down and explain the bits with insight and humor :-)
Thank you , you nailed it ! Best lesson I have seen for this tune ! Thanks
Great layout and I like how you offer students notation/tab pdf format-that's going above and beyond. I'm this will serve you well-keep up the good work!
Thanks Steve!
Josh thank you ! I am grateful by your teachings !
Thanks so much... this slapping this is way more fun than i thought..!
Thank you for all your free content and pdf. They been a great help
This is an enormous help. I couldn't even recognize the melody no matter how fast I tried to play it because my timing was so poor. I'm starting to hear it come through now.
I really like the way you teach man. Keep running !
Thanks Luiz!
Great lesson, thanks! I'm a guitar player starting on some bass and this feels like a good entry point!

great lesson man and great tips too, this really helped me out subscribed!
'Keep that dig-e-da dig-e-da dig-e-da did-e-da dig-e-da pulse going and look like you know what you're doing and it'll be fine' best advice ever :-)
Thank you so much for this tutorial
You're welcome!
Josh Fossgreen i love you
Hi Josh! Can you cover Like Eating Glass by Bloc Party?
What are the settings on your amp and effects if any? I've been having a really hard time getting a good slap/pop sound that I'm happy with.
No effects, generally my settings are pretty neutral on the bass and minimal EQ/compression in Logic (don't usually use an amp when recording these videos). Sometimes I roll toward my neck pickup to get more of a Jazz bassy growl that Flea sometimes has.
Make sure your strings aren't too old and your action isn't too high, those are two obvious things I would check if you're having slap issues.
sorry i should've been more clear. I meant the internal settings on the mobius. Was that just a preset or did you customize it? Also what was that song that you played during that part for the flanger. It's on the tip of my brain--just can't remember for the life of me. thanks and great vids/channel subscribing now
oops sorry that probably made no since I had to questions going at the same time & i just answered the wrong one lol, but still a very great channel I'm working on your higher ground and cult of personality vids now so I have my hands full. thanks for all
I'm rechecking all of my string heights today, but I'm leaning toward just not getting an adequate bounce off of the string so purely technique
Great video
I love how you explained this
It really helped me alot
You sound like a really nice guy
You know what you doing , you know your stuff , great playing ... great 👍
Even slow sounds badass and BTW keep driving on with the humor. Great lesson!
Great tute!
But where is the link for the basic slap technique you mentioned @5:00?
Thanks for the help brotha 🙏🏾 this helped out a fuck ton
Very good video tutorial served me a lot, thanks bro and greetings from Monterrey México.
You're welcome Oscar!
Josh, thanks a lot for your lessons and your overall contribution to the bass community! You ve mentioned in this video 7:12 Incubuss bass riff. that sounds amazing! i've tried to find it in the internet but could not... can you please tell me the name of the song
Great vid, Josh! Very helpful. If you don't mind me asking, what is your tip to get that tone?
What kind of bass were you using in this video.
My trusty ol' Peavey Cirrus.

thx mate, your vids are amazing and realy helpfull
Glad I can help! :)
I have only been playing for 4 months and am already close to learning this song!!! I feel so accomplished
I need a new one tho cuz my fret board bending :C
Wow it looks to hard but it is so easy when u go through it
For some of you who are confused as to the polyrhythm in High Grounds click the link below
imgur.com/a/7YTl11c
The arrows are his finger snaps and every other main beat in 12/8 are accented for the polyrhythm to work

How the polyrhythm works 4:3 or 3:4 (you can change them by your hand)
Also, more on 4:3 from ua-cam.com/video/c1pejTgLuhA/v-deo.html
Thanks! I love this video so much bc it was easy to learn the way you explain it
Glad it helped Franny!
Josh Fossgreen by the way what bass do you have? It sounds incredible!!!
The main slapping parts are right but there is a crazy funky scale that flea does in between. That’s what’s missing. Flea is a freak though and can play really fast scales up n down the bass with ease. I been trying to find what those scales are
Did my solo on this, got an A
Nice!
👍😁🎵
A what? a happy face balloon? a pat on the bum from a senior member of the clergy? a magical stick that destroyed and entire species of people that look like banana's and turned them into fruit?
Good tutorial
Excellent video, very thanks for the lesson. :)
Excellent as always.
You will go popular for sure
Heads up! Your cover video got removed I think. I like watching it very often and it doesn't show up in the search. I also checked your uploads and it isn't there anymore :(
Yeah :(
Ohhh ok I see star ya did. The crazy funky scales are later on in the video. I know he goes from higher notes to lower then back up again. But yeah. Like you said. It’s hard to pick out exactly what he’s doing lol
I started playing it yesterday and it took me 6 hours to get to song tempo
This is fantastic! Thank you sir 🫡
Starts @2:55
Thanks for the video and tab. Just a bit of feedback. That the lack of fret markers on the neck makes it a bit more difficult to follow what you're doing.
HELP PLEASE !!!
First of all, great video and great explanations !
But I want to ask something : I am a bass player and this song is a mythic song for me, it' the one that made me want to play the bass. For 3 years now, I have been trying to play this song but I can't have the same sound as the one in your COVER video. Now I can play this song without any real problem for the technique, but it's so frustrating because I have been trying a lot of things to improve the quality of sound (I changed the bass 2 times, I tried to play on other amps, I had my bass tuned and set by professionals, etc). According to the professionals who set my bass, my sound is really normal and there is nothing strange, but it's still frustrating for me because when doing slap or just when playing with fingers on the lowest string, I have SO LOUD metal noises I don't know how to remove (like PLOK and BZZ). BUT I understood more and more that it's normal, and when I saw your tutorial video (after the explanations), I realised that actually you also have what I call the metal "dirty" sounds, particularly when playing on the lowest string (the first note you play at 9:20 is a very good example). So I'm now SURE that it's normal ! You video is then perfect for me because you might be the perfect person to explain to me how you managed to remove that, since the sound in your cover is perfect (so I supposed you changed something ?).
I used to think that these "parasite sounds" were normal when playing unplugged, and that the volume of the amp would "hide" it but no. The amp also amplifies it. And anyway, in your tutorial video, you're also playing with an amp, don't you ?
I also used to think that it was normal to hear these "parasite sounds" when we play with an amp but "alone", without any back track "hiding" it, but no, since the song (and your cover) begins with bass only, but there are no parasite sounds.
Also, I used to think that the secret was to record for example directly on a sound card, to add post-video treatment, but I also saw covers in which people speak (during the song), which proves it is recorded with a basic camera.
Finally, I thought about using a compressor pedal but don't understand how it could hide this metallic sounds since it sounds mechanical to me.
I would be DELIGHTED if you (or anyone else) could explain to me how to solve this 3 years long MYSTERY and PAIN.
Thanks a lot in advance ! (and sorry for the mistakes in English !).
PS : I play on a Squier Modified Jazz Bass (but had the same problem playing on more expensive basses).
Hello there,
I've been playing bass half a year now and I also have that weird loud metallic noise when slapping. It seems that it's normal. Have you found out something about this problem?
@@marius.h you're literally slapping a METAL string
the first note at hjte 9:20 mark, has some fret 'rattle' In Josh's case: i think it's caused by uneven fret-wear, (the low G is worn down more then the G#, which is why you hear it rattle against it) which means it's time to level and crown the frets again, or even refret the bass. This is normal wear and tear when you play a lot on your instrument, but leave it to a professional to fix if you're not familiar with it.
If You experience this as well as a 'beginner', practise the placement of your fingers first: they should be right behind the frets, and if you hit a single note, You should be able to do this, without rattle. If there are notes which can't be done clean, then your strings could be set too low, or your neck is not straight. Get your instrument to a professional, and let them fix it. There are plenty of youtube videos showing you how to correct this, but it still is an art, and if you're not comfortable doing this, let a pro do it. they charge you 40,- 50,- maybe add a new set of strings to that, and your instrument plays as new
Get a compressor
Love that cirrus,...have a 5 string grind,..want one of those too though...bass Love 💕👍
Can u please tell me the notes or the positions of the fingers????
U do It greate
Idol!!!
good tutorial - nice bass too :)
That's very good men
You're best continue whit this type of videos
I have found an easier way is to hit the open A instead of sliding up from G to A. When I try to play the correct way it sounds a bit muted, or maybe I'm rushing it.
Love the jam behind the talking at the end. Fucking beautiful.
The A mixolydian pattern is different in the tabs, it's just regular notes, you play hammer ons here and it seems that the note choice is different.
Great playing! I'm mostly a guitar player, but I want to work and doing slap bass for my recordings.
I have an issue with getting such fast consecutive downstroke thumb slaps. I know a solution is often to do two-directional thumb slaps (basically slap and then a pop on the way back), but a bass line I wrote has a similar pattern where after two thumb slaps there's an octave pop. Doing the downstroke-upstroke double slap makes popping a higher string right after quite problematic.
So, I need to be able to pull off slap sequences as demonstrated here, but I don't see my hand moving anywhere quickly enough even if I'm just rotating my wrist in the air back and forth. Do you have any solution? I heard someone else say you should use the "jump" provided by the previous slap, but I don't feel my hand gets away from the string on its own - I need to consciously rotate away and then rotate it back onto the string to play another slap.
Thanks in advance!
Takes tons of practice! The more you relax, the faster you can go. In the words of Mark King, "Start slow, and get faster." :)
@@joshfossgreen Thanks, I'll try. Though I've been playing electric guitar for ten years and there are techniques I've been practicing at since the beginning which I'm arguably still crap at... lol
love this tutorial thanks so much

The poly-rhythmic explanation totally threw me.I have never heard this tune with anything other than the standard 12/8 count. And,after you described it,I still can't hear it!
John, what are you doing with a bass?
Dude. If you’re going to give base lessons on line could you use a guitar with dots on the neck? Pls
..jus LEARN the fingerboard and it shouldn't be a problem..🎓

Its not that hard to count bro, just pause
Which incubus song was that?
Same I gotta know.
Very nice Josh....
Thanks Don!
you are a good sport
Thanks for posting!
I can do the slap and pop... but i just can't get my wrist to relax.
do you have lessons that will help with that?
Closest thing is in his idiot-prof slap lesson on BassBuzz, which just says to stand straight up, have your arm by your side and wiggle it a lot to loosen it
Sick!
starts in 2:53
7:13 certain shade of green perhaps?
Thanks Josh .
thanks for the pdf man!!!! and good lessons tho
Great video. thanks.
I simply cant hear it as a polyrhythm. 12/8 all the way
Oh my goodness it’s the bass buzz fella
So this is where bass buzz guy was before bass buzz, huh
Josh you explained this riff really well . I wanted to ask you why is it my E string vibrates making unnecessary noise when slapping and no one I see online has this problem. I know how to palm mute , finger tip or thumb mute the E string when slapping the A string and all that but this seems excessive. Could it be the bridge of my bass not being sturdy enough , its the basic bridge where I can separate the saddles so they don't touch one another.
I've tried adjusting the truss rod because my bass was bowed a bit , adjusted the action , tried new strings , a sponge under the strings that dries and does no good plus a folded up paper towel to a nice neat little square under the strings by the bridge that helps some if I make it the right thickness. Its awful frustrating BUT I don't dare get angry because playing bass is my passion so I just move on to the next riff.
Does anyone else watching this have a bass with a noisy E string tremble disease ?
+Mark S B. no excessive, I have the same thing on both of my basses. You accidentally touch E string when you slap A, so I just palm mute all other strings while slapping. I've been playing like this for 3 years, no problems at all
Thanks , it was me and not enough experience but got it now, I've played bass for 9 months now and things are getting better by the day.
Thank you sir.
The bridges are a bit more complex than that. There is an isolated bass track on youtube that i will try to find for you.
Here it is:

Here is a bass-boosted version of the song that i made by combining the studio recording and the isolated bass track in Audacity:

whats the guitar?
It's probably better for teaching if your bass has inlays ;) Excellent lesson though! Very helpful!
Thanks for the suggestion Justin, maybe I'll start bringing my Fenders into the picture more often. :)
Josh Fossgreen What do you suggest? I can slap and pop pretty fast on the A and G strings but I can't on the E and D because (I'm sure you know) the G string is in the way of my popping finger.
Very cool video. Much appreciated man! Gotta say I was cringing alot watching your left hand.. 1 finger per fret! I could see if you had small stubby fingers using your pinky for the 3rd, but damn.. break the habit! LOL
You shouldn't be cringing. Using one-finger-per-fret when you don't need it is a waste of energy. If you watch me (or most pro bassists) play long enough, you'll see me switch between fingering approaches based on context and conservation of energy/effort.
You are correct.. there is a time and place for alternate fingering. But as a whole I have no problems keeping 1 finger per fret as a default on my 6-string bass. Appreciate the video though!
Didn’t put the link there
