  • Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) has become the mainstay of the livelihoods of most rural communities in Zimbabwe today. However, COVID19 not only had a health impact on artisanal and small-scale mining communities, but affected their economic sustainability too.
Green Governance Zimbabwe Trust (GGZT) set out to assess the impact of COVID 19 on ASM and with the support of Action Aid Zimbabwe (AAZ) developed an intervention to assist them cope with the impact of the pandemic. There is an urgent need to develop a better understanding of the ASM sector so that important decisions specific to each context are made, particularly regarding formalizing their operations. With this in mind I have partnered with GGZT and we will travel to Premier in Penhalonga Mutare to collect footage of the ASM activities happening in the area whilst also finding out what the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has been on the community.
