Im not an engineer by any means, and ik this is something Jarno may have already considered, but it could be that the balance on the setup uses the rears strongly, so when they have 100% grip the car understeers, but as the grip lowers the rear starts to slide more and on worn tyres it gets to the grip balance Jarno wants cause the car was oversteering at the end of the tyres life and understeering at the beginning.
I mean alonso and perez’s finish in brazil this year was very close as well, id say there is quite a bit of competition when we ignore Max and the other teams arent screwing up their own races.

What a race! I saw that finish live and I did a league race myself around Saudi/Jeddah just the other week where I was in Puki’s situation and lost it to the line, so I knew you could get him thanks to the DRS on the last straight. Great job! 🏎💨
