  • Nick Colella (@nickcolella) joins the show this week to talk about how much of the old school mentality can realistically be applied in today's tattooing. Should we really be trying to blindly celebrate the past?

When I was 24 I tattooed for Gypsy Copp at his shop Skin Graphics (might of been one word...it was 26 years ago). It was in the Southside of Chicago. All I tattooed were Disciples. I was a punk rock kid from D.C. and it was my 1st taste hardcore gangs ( but not the last). Chicago gave me an education I could have never paid for. Respects to Chicago and it's amazing tattoo history. The direction Books Closed has gone is so great! Cheers.

St Louis convention in 2012, he charged 600 dollars for a 90 minute free hand eagle on my bud after it was done. It was shocking haha. First time we heard of charging by the piece and not the hour because of how blindingly fast he is at tattooing. Was looking right into my buddies eyes as he was talking and dragging lines. It was insane.

Nick has been doing my tattoos for almost 25 years. One of the nicest guys you will ever meet and one of the most gifted artists around.

Great to hear a guy that is relevant being that open minded about how the tattoo world is working these days and everything related to it. Thanks for all the information provided in the channel.

Really felt like hanging with two buddies on this one!! For the dildo machines part: for myself, I changed mainly because of the sound, literally deafening me. After 10 years coil tattooing I noticed that my hearing decreased pretty badly, and less vibrations (weird for a dildo🤔) was not a bad thing for my wrist. And also, I do understand the old school link/feeling towards coil machine, but if we want to be honest, prison tattoo machines were and are rotaries, less accurate, no sexy looking, still badass though. But hey, as long as the healed tattoo looks good, that's all that matters I guess. Thanks for the videos!

Is is very different selling cars but I love it and welcome the change. I like not having to bullshit. As a tattoo collector however I laugh when I hear a person getting a tattoo telling the artist what kind of needs or pigment they should use.

It was funny hearing you talk about getting a apprenticeship etc... I was at Josh Hall’s shop yesterday... Over heard and saw a dad tell Josh that his daughter wanted to tattoo.
Josh turned to the daughter and gave the textbook response. Don’t do it - your life is going to be to hard etc.
It’s funny to me. Any job / career is hard. Most people struggle and are lucky to come out successful in the latter part of their life.

LU Silva I think it’s not text book the way you think it is like a deterrent...I think it’s text book because it’s true. A lot of tattooers won’t be honest about it for their image or own insecurity, but Tim Hendrix said it best , asked if he would encourage his children to follow in his steps , he said fuck no. It’s Labor. Nights , weekends, not family friendly, not schedule friendly, no retirement, no way out besides learning to build machines I guess... most kids aren’t told the whole truth when they want in. I wish the I would have been told to stay in art school at 19. An education will be way easier to make a good life with then a labor job. Period. Especially in capitalist America.

Maybe interview a regular tattoo artist instead of all these big names. Could get a different perspective.
